Where does the water that we use come from?
• Fresh water – lakes, rivers, streams, ground water
• Most water on the planet is salt water.
• The saline content makes it poisonous to plants and animals.

Where does the water that we drink come from?
• Lakes• Rivers• Underground
aquifers - area underground rock through which water can move.

Coagulation
• Chemicals are added to water to remove dirt.• Dirt drops
to the bottom

Sedimentation
• Large particles drop to the bottom

Filtration• Water
moves through filters like sand, gravel and charcoal to remove small particles

Disinfection• A small amount of Chlorine
is added to the water to kill microorganisms.

Storage
• Water is put in a closed tank or reservoir and runs through pipes to communities

How do we use water?
•Drinking•Bathing• Irrigation• Industry

Is water renewable or non renewable?
• Water is a renewable resource (water cycle), but some areas have such a high need that water shortages can occur.

• Water supplies can become contaminated due to poor sanitation.
• This can lead to life threatening diseases such as cholera.
