SEWER and RESIDUAL WATERS

Treatment of sewer and residual waters

It is the process to remove contaminants from the water. This involves physical. chemical and biological processes to remove physical, chemical and biological contaminants. The objective is to produce a safe fluid flow for the environment and a sufficiently safe process for discarding or reusing the mud usually as an agricultural fertilizer. Using advanced technology today it is possible to use treated rain water and residual water flows as grey and potable water. Singapore is the only country using this technology and it currently has the capacity of new water production.

Water resources in El Salvador are highly contaminated due in part to the almost non existence of sewer or residual water treatment. This situation becomes aggravated during the hot summer months when water supplies run low and its access causes serious conflicts between users.

According to several national and international studies 90% of surface water has some degree of contamination. All residual water and that contaminated by industrial production are released to rivers, creeks and dams without any prior treatment.

The most urgent cases that need attention are the river banks of the Acelhuate and Rio Sucio rivers, these rives provide a third of the water supply to the San Salvador Metropolitan Area.

In the last 30 years water springs have decliend 30% due to deforestacion. This reduces access to water to the rural population who supply themselves by using water wells which aquifers have gone down at least a meter per year of use with very little to none natural replenishing.
