Financing the investments to provide water on a long term basisat a reasonable price for the population. How to get the maximum number of efcient infrastructuresfrom the money allocated? We need to achieve our objectives at the lowest cost.
Schneider Electric has solutions to reduce both design and operating costs.Methodological tools are necessary or both power and control.
Optimizing costs requires structured design. Schneider Electric oers proven power
and automation architectures to simpliy design. To adopt such architectures,
we provide customers with design, calculation and checking tools.
From design
Design tools enable the power rating to be easily and quickly sized and the electrical
distribution equipment to be chosen. As a consequence, design and installation costs
are reduced and the dierent solutions are easily compared.
Schneider Electric oers a range o variable speed drives with an integrated automation
controller. Using preloaded and user congurable applications, up to ve pumps can be
controlled to ensure a constant water supply.
to operating tools
Collaborative tools allow design, engineering and commissioning, rom the sensor up
to the SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system. These tools provide
support throughout the projects liecycle, including operation and maintenance,
as well as during extensions and process changes. The savings made by using these
tools are based on proven methodologies and the reuse o predened application
know-how. The unique design and user interace reduce the eort needed or operatorand maintenance training.
Communication
Motor Control Centres (MCC) also reduce design costs. They use the latest
communication technologies (intelligent Motor Control Centres, iMCC) : smaller
components and reduced cabling optimize hardware and labour costs.

Electrical energy may account for as much as 30% of youroperating costs. 3 aspects of Energy Efciency should beconsidered for a high level of power quality :
>Energy Savings :reduced consumption for all types of operations,> Energy Cost Optimization :reduced costs of the energy used by the different operations,> Availability & Reliability :minimize outage risks through design and strategy, and sustainenergy gains through reliable and efcient equipment operation.
Solutions or energy savings
The latest generation o low-loss
transormers and high perormance
motors allows global eciency to be
improved by up to 5%.
When high power motors are requested
(> 500kW), the use o an Medium Voltage
supply reduces line currents, thus
reducing the Joule losses in transormers,
cables and motors. A Low Voltage supply
may become cost-prohibitive because
equipment sizes get very large, limited or
unavailable, and multiple sets o cables
are needed.>>>
Variable Speed Drives are used to great
advantage in pumping applications.
By adjusting the speed o rotation,
the absorbed electrical power may be
reduced by 50% at 80% o nominal fow.
In water installations, harmonics are mainly
generated by Variable Speed Drives,
Ozone generators and UV lamps, which
should all be careully managed
to avoid resonance, particularly when
Power Factor Correction capacitors are
present.
Increased current demands and nuisance
tripping are the most requent adverse
consequences o harmonics.
Schneider Electric can provide assistance
and solutions or Harmonic management
in compliance with Utility regulations.

Solutions or energy cost optimization
The cost or a given energy consumption
may be reduced in dierent ways.
Power Factor Correction provides several
advantages that add together :
avoids invoicing o reactive energy
by the Utility,
reduces the current demand,
eliminates transormer over-sizing and
allows the ull system capacity to be used.
Power Factor Correction is generally
achieved through the use o capacitor
banks.
Power monitoring devices are used or
2 main reasons :
to know which sectors consume the
most power,
to monitor Energy Eciencyimprovements.
Three types o technologies are available :
stand alone measurement unit,
LV and MV protection relays,
High perormance metering units.
Various resources are used to send data
rom metering and protection devices
installed in the users electrical panels,
via Schneider Electric TransparentReady.
*Sot starters
are available in a wide
range o power ratings,
and are particularly
suitable or water
applications such as
pumping. Multiplexing
is commonly used or
cascading start-ups and
decelerations o multiple
motors.
The ollowing is a list o
the main advantages
this provides :
less mechanical stress
at motor start-up, thus
improving mechanical
reliability,
controlled torque
at motor stopping, thus
avoiding water-hammer
and damage to pipes,
power peak shaving,
thus avoiding penalties, reduced losses
at motor start-up.
Process diagnostics and optimization
Detecting problems as early as possible
avoids process downtime and also
reduces operating costs. Schneider
Electric oers diagnostic tools that are
easy to use and which give ecient
access to relevant inormation, such as
the root cause and process values
needed to x the problem.
At the Supervision Control And Data
Acquisition (SCADA) level, tools such as
Process Analyst are available to create
reports and analyze process data, which
can then be used to optimize the process
in order to reduce electricity consumption.

The raw material needed to produce drinkingwater may come from different sources(springs, aquifers, rivers, oceans), andappropriate technologies have to be used. The available space and the volume of waterto be treated also determine the technicalchoices. In all cases, the required water qualityhas to be reached and proved in accordancewith regulations and the authorities contracts.
Both the automation system and the electricalnetwork must be studied to provide highperformance and a high level of availability. The solution includes software and hardwarearchitecture with redundancy at all levels:
A high level o availability aects power as well asautomation :
A high level o availability is requested or all parts
o an application identied as being critical, and may include
redundancy or :
power architecture, stand-by generators,
UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply),
motor control, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controller),
communication and SCADA (Supervision Control
And Data Acquisition).
Power solutions
Dierent Circuit Congurations can be selected, as listed here
in increasing order o power availability :
radial single eeder,
two-pole conguration (secondary selective),
double-ended power supply (primary selective).
The implementation o back-up generators is very common
in water treatment plants where water distribution cannot be
interrupted or periods longer than a ew minutes.
No instantaneous take-over is necessary, as buer tanksare generally present. Automatic transer switches are naturally
associated with generators or rapid take-over and smooth
switch-back to normal supply.
Protection coordination is a key aspect or improving supply
continuity. Two examples are mentioned here :
discrimination between unctional units such that a problem
on a grid doesnt stop biological treatment or instance,
coordination o motor protection and control minimizes
downtime.

Availibility is mainly ocuses on the ollowing three levels
SCADA
On the SCADA side, Schneider Electric oers seamless, integrated and scalable
redundancy. This fexible redundancy can be enlarged to avoid not only network errors,
but also PC hardware errors the result is a highly optimized and available solution.
Network
Ethernet, which has proved itsel over the years as being the reliable industrial
standard, provides the solution or communication architectures requiring high levels
o availability. Communication can easily be adjusted to the required level o availability,
such as redundant media and/or network interaces, sel-healing ber optic rings and
communication backups.
Control
Doubling the PLC gives a highly optimized solution that avoids the negative eects
and process downtime caused by problems at the control level. In the event o an error,
there is an automatic bumpless switchover between the Primary and the Standby PLC -
both are connected by a dedicated high speed Ethernet link. The availability level o the
control system can be increased by duplicating the I/O level, along withthe corresponding sensors and actuators.
Automation components or harsh environments
In water applications, the environment is sometimes polluted and may have negative
impacts on the ageing o the electronic components used. This results in unexpected
downtime and higher maintenance costs. Based on extensive eld experience,
Schneider Electric has developed a special protection process (conormal coating)
to improve service lie in such aggressive chemical and corrosive environments.

In a complex process like desalination, integrated solutionsfor power and control are required to reach the expectedperformance level. Based on the size of such applications,a large amount of process information has to be treatedand exchanged between the different parts of the plant.
For such applications we provide dedicated water solution
architectures and tools covering the complete project lifecycle, from design to operation and modernization.
Intelligent Motor Control Centres (iMCC)
Overall perormance or motor control could be increased by using type tested
equipment that oers :
seamless integration into the control system,
prevention o malunction,
type tested equipment, reduction o space, installation time and maintenance,
easy addition or modication o eeders whilst energized.
Collaborative Control System (CCS)
Filtration process applications are based on various dierent components :
controllers,
SCADA systems (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition),
instrumentation,
drives,
sensors and I/Os.
All these devices must be integrated, congured and optimized during commissioning
and operation.
Schneider Electric collaborative tools cover all the dierent aspects and reduce
integration costs. Proven application knowledge has been integrated into libraries,
thus oering a high level o quality and standardization. The level o standardization
provides consistent user interaces, operating modes and diagnostic capabilities,
thus reducing the amount o training and maintenance needed.

Membrane fltration
Reverse osmosis is the most common
technique used or desalination, and is as
an alternative to distillation. It may also be
used to recycle water to produce drinking
water rom wastewater. Nano ltration
is another example used or instance
to produce drinking water rom surace
water.
Membrane ltration is an up and coming
water treatment technology, or both
industrial and public use. The reduced
space needed or the plant and its ability
to treat all types o raw water are key
drivers.
Membrane technology has meant that
water treatment has changed rom being
a batch process to a continuous process,
which has led to higher perormanceconstraints. High pressure is the key
to membrane ltration. This requires a
high quantity o electrical energy and
the use o high power motors. Electrical
Distribution and Motor Control are thus
a comprehensive part o the process.
Link to the Instrumentation
An instrumentation link based on
standardized protocols enables
signicantly improved mastery o
complex ltration processes. Extensive
process eedback and access to device
parameters increases perormance and
diagnostic capabilities.
Asset management tools with
standardized interaces give access
to devices and provide benets byhaving access to a large range o
parameters and diagnostic inormation.
Hence preventive maintenance can be
used to reduce unexpected downtime.
Availability and operating costs are
greatly improved.
The cost and eciency o membranes
have greatly improved, but membranes
remain ragile. Strict water pre-treatment
is necessary because o the sensitivity to
some pollutants. In addition, membranes
may deteriorate unless they are maintained
under high pressure.
Consequently, power interruptions should
be avoided as much as possible. Power
and control are highly interconnected.
Service Oriented Architectures and open protocols
guarantee an ecient solution.

Schneider Electric oers additional advantages through
a set o innovative solutions or pumping stations :
Increased availability and perormance with multi-drive
solutions or boosting stations
Using several variable speed drives is a way o increasing
system availability. Embedded programmable cards provide
a specic advantage.
Each pump is controlled using a variable speed drive, with
a controller inside the card. The various drives and their cards
are connected via a communication network. Only one pump
(the duty pump) is under variable speed control during normal
operation. The duty is passed rom one pump to anotheron a time basis.
This solution provides additional benets such as smooth
and bumpless control, together with potential cost savings.
Small pumping stations and reservoirs
A cost eective and ready to use solution
- management o two pumps, control by direct-on-line
or sot starters,
- an all-in-one controller, with pre-programmed sotware and
integrated Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) capabilities, providesa solution or pumping stations, recovery stations, reservoirs,
etc.
In drinking water networks, constant distribution pressureis required to reach all oors in urban zones and to overcomephysical barriers in rural zones. Boosting stations are placedalong the network, and both constant availability and real timeadaptation to the users water demands are required.Different technologies are used: from xed to variable speed, from switchboards to stand alone devices, from medium voltageto low voltage. In all cases, perfect integration into the electricaland automation networks is necessary.

A telemetry system is the answer
All links between remote sites are periodic and characterized by exchanges
triggered by cyclical polling rom the central system, upon operator request
or upon the occurrence o an event :
data transmission between remote sites and the central supervisory system
(Scada),
communication protocols (IEC 870, DNP3, Modbus),
media (cable, radio, GSM. Modem, Internet, ),
handling o time stamped events, measurements and buering o data
in case o interrupted links.
Compact RTU all in one (Remote Terminal Unit)
Small applications require optimized solutions. The compact RTU oers:
precongured ready to use applications,
management o up to our pumps,
storage o measurements and events,
integrated RTU communication and is able to be integrated in Telemetry
architectures based on a broad range o standard protocols such as IEC, Modbus
and DNP3.
RTU unctionality integrated in modular PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)
RTU unctions and PLC fexibility orms the basis o the integrated Schneider Electric
oer.
Oering Master and Slave communication opens the door to dierent architectures.
Our solutions are based on reliable and industrially proven hardware, designed or
the harsh environment o wastewater pumping stations. The Modicon PLC range
oers a wide choice to meet the dierent requirements.
SCADA: the central point (Supervision Control And Data Acquisition)
Due to the large distances in pumping networks, seamless communication
integration is the key to monitoring, operating and maintaining such applications.
Our oer includes standard SCADA eatures such as scalability, reporting,
redundancy and diagnostics, as well as specic RTU unctions such as IEC
protocols and the handling o modems, time stamped alarms and data. Data
can be exchanged easily in several well known ormats such as dBase, SQL, Oracle
and several others, or subsequent processing using Oce tools.

Distributed control architectures
To keep up with the fexibility needed in terms o process evolution and the need to
integrate dierent packages such as sludge treatment, distributed control architecture is
the best choice. Its structure o independent unctional units, each equipped with
a modular PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) connected via an industrial network
to the SCADA (Supervision Control And Data Acquisition) system provides a reliable
and fexible solution. Such architectures can easily be modied or extended by adding
new unctional units. Data exchange and synchronisation are based on standard
industrial Ethernet protocols. Our solutions are based on reliable and industrially
proven hardware, designed or the harsh environment o wastewater treatment plants.
Automation islands as an integration platorm
The easy integration o digital and analog signals, motor starters and variable speed
drives is the key to improving and adapting water process applications
in a fexible way. Compatibility with various networks and eld busses allows device
layout standardisation only the communication interace has to be adapted.
This standardisation leads to higher fexibility and cost savings at the engineering
and commissioning stages.
Eective SCADA system to monitor, analyse and optimize the water processTo reach the quality targets set by regulations, the SCADA system has to log and treat
all the relevant process inormation needed to monitor the plant. Schneider Electrics
SCADA system logs data in standard ormats such as dBase, SQL and Oracle.
Process Analyst is the perect tool or analyzing the dierent process data such as
measurements, alarm and digital data sources in one single environment the intuitive
user interace quickly provides the operator with the relevant inormation.
Upgrading o Electrical Distribution and Motor Control
Schneider Electric is able to oer Electrical Distribution equipment retrots as a solution
to meet the increasing level o quality requirements. For example, modern equipment
with embedded power monitoring and communication can be implemented or betterand easier energy management. Variable speed drives are very adaptive tools or easier
process adjustment and more accurate process control.
Latest PLC technologies
Scalable migration is one o the key eatures oered by the Schneider Electric PLC
range :
existing Inputs/Outputs can be kept, a new generation o processor provides new
services and increases the perormance o the application,
even when all the hardware has to be changed, the sotware can be converted
and reused with the latest hardware to benet rom the new eatures.
All these upgrading eatures provide fexibility, high perormance and cost eectiveness
or the process control, and protect previous investments.
