WATER PURIFICATION USING NANO TECHNOLOGY

Project Investigators: Dr. M. Prithviraj Sri U.T.Vijay

Project Cost & Agency: Rs.1,25,000/- DST,GOK

Background The Council has taken up this Nano water purification using Nano technology being developed by Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT, Madras to test the technology on pilot scale and get the feedback from the users based on directions from DST, GOK.

Objectives • To identify the rural habitations affected by the Arsenic in drinking water source

• To implement the Nano water filter technology developed by IIT, Madras in one

arsenic affected habitation • To monitor the functioning of Nano water filter and quality of drinking water for

some period • To extend and upscale the Nano filter technology to other affected villages based

on performance and feedback

Progress The execution of the project work has been commenced by initiating the following activities: • The project team visited and initiated the process of collaboration with

IIT,Madras during May 2014

• The Council has received the funds from KSTEPS, DST,GOK during June 2014

• Collected the list of arsenic affected villages along with the data on water

quality data of Raichur and Yadgir districts • Field verification and short listing of one habitation affected by Arsenic is

under progress in Yadgir district

Project Investigators: Dr. M. Prithviraj Sri U.T.Vijay Project Cost & Agency: Rs. 20,00,000/-

DST,GOK (Rs.1.25 lakhs) HGML (Rs. 18.75 lakhs)

The Council has taken up this water purification using Nano technology being developed by Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT, Madras to test the technology on pilot scale and get the feedback from the users based on directions from DST, GOK. Discussions had with M/s Innokriti cleantech, Bengaluru a partnering organisation of IIT, Madras to provide the nano technology based water filter units to treat Arsenic affected drinking water source. Team comprising senior scientific staff from KSCST, Innokriti and HGML have carried out filed visits at 10 villages in Raichur and Yadgir districts and water samples have been collected from 8 villages. Water sample testing analysis has been carried out at Chemical Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Science and other recognised lab in Bengaluru. From the water testing analysis, it is found that, out of these eight villages, Uti and Medhinapur villages in Raichur district and Halammapur in Yadgir district have high Arsenic content than permissible limit in the range of 0.06ppm to 0.30ppm. M/s Innokriti is being providing the Nano technology based water filtering units to these villages based on the field requirements. KSCST would be installing these units in these Arsenic affected villages with the cooperation and support of HGML, Hutti and respective Panchayath Raj Institutions for further maintenance of the filter units.

Budget & Agency Rs.1, 25,000, DST, GOK Rs. 18, 75,000, HGML, Hutti

Background: The Council has taken up this water purification to treat the Arsenic affected drinking water source using Nano technology being developed by Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT, Madras to test the technology on pilot scale and get the feedback from the users to upscale or demonstrate the Nano technology for water purification based on the directions from DST, GOK.

Objectives: • To identify the rural habitations affected by the Arsenic in drinking water

source

• To implement the Nano water filter technology developed by IIT, Madras in one arsenic affected habitation

• To monitor the functioning of Nano water filter and quality of drinking water for some period

• To extend and upscale the Nano filter technology to other affected villages based on performance and feedback

Progress: A. Halaammapur village • Nano technology based water purifying unit having the capacity of

2000 lts per day has been installed and commissioned at HalAammapur village in Shorapur taluk, Yadgir district on 03-12-2015 with the consent and support from Zilla Panchayath, Yadgir.

• Based on the request by KSCST, the Zilla panchayath, Yadgir has handed over the Unit to the Pet Ammapur Gramapanchayath for daily operation and maintenance of the unit.

• Both input and output water of the purifying unit has been tested and the residents of the village have been using Arsenic free purified water for drinking purposes since inception of the commissioning of the unit and expressed their satisfaction about the quality of the water.

• Planning to carry out the regular testing of the water samples of the treated water and assessing the status of water borne deceases after started using the treated water from Nanotechnology based water purifying unit.

B. Medhinapura & Uti villages • Finalized two villages namely Medhinapur in Lingasugur taluk and

Uti village in Devadurga taluk in Raichur district with the consent and support from Zilla Panchayath, Raichur district for installation of Nano technology based water purifying units being funded by HGML, Hutti during October 2015.

• A Water purifying unit having the capacity of 5000 lts per day has been installed and commissioned at Medhinapur village in Lingsugur taluk, Raichur district on 24-12-2015 with the consent and support from Zilla Panchayath, Raichur.

• Handed over the Nano technology based water purifying unit installed at Medhinapur village to PDO, Grama Panchayath, Kota for operation and maintenance on 04-02-2016.
