I'vecompletedthedesignandtestingofatwinHallEffectcontrolfortheCDIsystemI'vebuilt.The

diagramshowslookingdownintothedistributorwithcapandrotorremoved.It'ssomewhatpictorial.

OneHallEffectsensorisforthechargepulseandtheotherisforthedischargepulse.The2.2kohm

resistorsplayadualrole.First,eachactsasapullupresistor.Whenoneofthemagnets(littlesquares

ontherotor)passesbythesensor,the'minus'wirefromthesensorgoestohighimpedanceandthe

2.2kresistoryanksthe'plus'sideoftheMosfetoptoupandturningtheMosfet"on".Whenthewindow

Step9: FireupthecircuitDRY(nowater)Weflippedtheswitchbackandforth. Wegotgood,notgreat

PLASMAarcsalthoughtheywereintermittent. WeobservedtheHVsparkeverytimeweflippedthe

switch,buttheplasmaarcsweresporadic.

Step10: Testthecircuitwithwater.Wemistedthesparkplugwithwaterandstartedflippingtheswitch

backandforth. Theplasmaarcsgeneratedweresubstantiallybiggerandbrighterarcsandlouderbangs

thanwhenfireddry,howevertheplasmaarcswerestillintermittentanddidn'tyieldanarceverytime

theswitchwasopenedandclosed,althoughwedidgettheHVsparkeverytime.

Afewcommentsastowhythecircuitisdesignedasis. The301N4007diodesareconnectedinseriesto

preventtheHVfromreversingbacktowardtheinverter. The500Kohmresistorsinparallelwitheach

diodeessentiallyequalizesthediodes. Sometimesadiodemaynothaveallthepropercharacteristicsas

rated. Ifonediodeisactuallyweakerandinternallynotfunctioninguptospecifications,itwillblowand

causeacascadingchainofblowndiodes. The500Kohmresistorsinparallelwiththediodesequalizes

thediodes.

TherectifiedACLVsideofthecircuitwillneverseethe500Kinforwarddirectionbecauseelectricitywill

takethepathofleastresistanceandflowthroughthediode. Inthereversedirectionitwillseethe

reverseoppositionofthediode,butifthediodeisdeficient,itwillalsoseethe500Kohmresistorand
