    What is meant by Abrasive?

Abrasives are fine particles( 0.025mm) of sharpedges.

Normally it is made up of Aluminium oxide or Silicon

    Carbide.

Sharp edges is mainly to wear out the metal.

The below fig.1 gives the abrasive material shape

    ABRASIVE WATER JET

An abrasive water jet is a jet of water whichcontains abrasive material. Usually the

water exits a nozzle at a high speed and the

abrasive material is injected into the jet

    stream

However a high speed jet of a premixture of

the abrasive and the water would also bedefined as an abrasive water jet.

    Principle :

It is based on the principle oferosion of the material upon which the jet hits.

    Description

Each of the two components of thejet, i.e. the water and the abrasive

    material has both a separate

purpose and a supportive purpose. It

is the primary purpose of theabrasive material within the jet

stream to provide the erosive forces

It is the primary purpose of the jet todeliver the abrasive material to the

workpiece for the purpose of erosion

the jet also accelerates the abrasivematerial to a speed such that the

impact and change in momentum of

the abrasive material can perform its

    function.

In addition it is an additional purpose

of the water to carry both the abrasivematerial and the eroded materialclear of the work area so thatadditional processing can beperformed.

The purpose of the abrasive water jetis to perform some machining orfinishing operation such as cutting,

    boring, turning, etc.

    ABRASIVE WATER JETMACHINING VS CONVENTIONAL

    MACHINING METHODS

In abrasive water jet machining material is

removed by erosion where as in conventional

    it is removed by shearing.

Both conventional and abrasive water jet

machining, the liquid medium will also act as a

heat sink, taking heat away from the machiningarea.

    USESOFABRASIVE W ATER JET MACHINING

cutting of difficult-to-machine materials by abrasive water

jets milling and 3-D-shaping by abrasive water jets

    turning by abrasive water jets

piercing and drilling by abrasive water jets

These operations are similar to just plain water jetmachining but because of special considerations such asthe type of material or shape complexity require theaddition of the abrasive phase. Operations where plainwater jet machining would be sufficient include:

cutting of materials such as plastics, thin metal, textiles,

    deburring, surface peening

Software for abrasive water jet machines

Software plays a key role in abrasive jet machining. Infact, it is only

through software that precision abrasive jet machining truly is possible. Some of the most significant advancements in the industry have been

    in software

Early abrasive jet machinery was controlled with G-code controllers

much like any other numerically controlled machinery. The user had to

choose the feed rate at each point along the path, taking into accountthe material type and thickness and the cutting power of the particular

jet. The motion commands, other than for speed, could be generated

either automatically by a CAD-CAM program or by hand

This type of programming is used primarily for five-axis work and is

    suitable for large production runs.
