FACTS

2.6 billion people in the world do not have access to adequate sanitation; this is roughly two-fifths of the world's population.

1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to safe water; this is roughly one sixth of the world's population.

Nearly 6000 children die from water-related diseases every day.

It is 12% more likely that children will attend school if water is available within 15 minutes rather than one hour's walk. 11% more girls attend school when sanitation is available.

WANT IT? – GOTTA HAVE IT!

Using the ‘Wants/Needs’ worksheets discuss which are really needs and which just wants.

Rank the wants needs to decide which is the most important need

“US government to ban all non-essential use ofwater for at least a year”.

• Decide what are ‘essential’ and ‘nonessential’uses of water. • What effects would such a ban have on our

daily lives?• How difficult would it be to live a ‘normal’ life? • How would life change?

Opinion line

• In your groups you need to place the following statements into order most to least shocking.

Another solution…..Play pumps

Play pumps in Kenya

• The roundabout is no ordinary roundabout. It’s a pumping mechanism, to bring fresh water from underground, for everyone in the community to use. It can protect children in Kenya's slums from deadly diseases.

• As children play, they’re helping to get the safe clean, water they need.

• This can have a major impact on the local community - giving children the chance of a safe and better future.

Practice exam question

• For a named place explain the issues they have had with clean water and what has been done to deal with this issue (6)

Water for life game

The idea is to create a board game that can be played to teach other children about the problem of water shortages in the world.

Idea:Using the snakes and ladders game decide what to write

in each square using the information they researched over the last two lessons. The ladder squares should reflect some of the work being done by various charities to help and the improvements made and the snake squares should reflect the causes of shortages and the problems associated with a lack of water.
