Hence your faithand love and zeal toward God and your zeal for the Go spelare less strong than you could desire. Let us hope that aswe reason together on this great subject to-day, we may byGod's grace see more clearly than ever before which is thetrue Gospel..'....the one of which the Apostle was not asham ed,and of which, th erefore, none of us need feel ashamed , t h eGospel, therefore, which should more and more; move andenergize us as the power of God, unto salv a tion.

and Popes, go to Purgatory for refin emen t, purification fromsin and to be prepared for heaven. It claims that some willspend only a sho rt t ime in Purgatory, assisted out of it bythe merit of prayers, masses, etc ., on their behalf by theirfr i ends after death. But their expectation is tha t ultimat elyPurgatory will be no more, its thousands of milli ons beingprepared for a better and happier condition. But accordingto all the great theologians oi Papacy, and according to allth e Papal bulls, all Protestants, all rejectors of Pa p ac y's teaching s will suffer endless torment. This is th e Roman CatholicGospel fairly prese n ted, as we understand it. t does notseems to us to be very good news- not very good tidings, evento th ose who get the very best it has to offer, and it certainlywould be very bad tidings to all out of harmony with Papacy.

Let us next look at the great Prote st ant doctrine represented in the word Calvinism - t he doctrine of the electionof the Church and the reprobation of all others.

THE GOSPEL PRESENTED BY CALVI NI SM.

Calvinism claims that faith in Christ is essent ial to salvation and it ;ldmits th at faith comes by hearing an d hearing by th e Word of God. Calvinism requires more than amere knowledge of Christ and belief in him as a good andexemplary man, who died a martyr to his too ex treme convictions . I t requires faith in Christ's death as a sacrifice forman's sin, and at least some mani festation towards righteousness of life befor e any could be recognized as being of theelect Church . Consequently, according to Calvinism , the electChurch coul d not include the heathen of the present timeand all th e way back through the past, who have never heardof the o nly name given under heaven or amongst men wherebywe must be sa ved. Stretched to its very broadest, Calvinismcould not include more than one in twenty of earth 's f if tyth ousan d millions that are estimated to have lived from Adam'sday until the presen t tim e. n other words , according to t hebr oades t possible estimate of this view , more than fortyseven thousand millions of humanity were in the languageof the Westminster Confession of Faith, passed by a s nonelect in the divine plan.

And what does this mean passed by or non-elect?t means, according to Calvinism, that God, who knew the

end from the beginning, befo re creating this world and mankind upon it, determined that he would pass by and notelect those forty-seven thousand millions of his creatures tolife and happiness. bu t would pr ede stinate them to an eternityof torture, and tha t carrying out this diabolical plan, he prepared a great place large enough to hold forty-seven t housandmillions, and fuel sufficient to produce the necessary combus-

tion there to all eternity-did all this with a full appreciation of all the awful facts and circumstances of the case

Moreover , we r emember the statement of Calvinismwhich many of us learned in our youth, to the effect thatGod 's favor toward the elect is not because of any worthinesson their part , nor because of any works which they had done, but of bis own sovereign grace he sav es them from allthe horrible conditions which be has pr edestinated shall beupon the others . Now if th e salvation of the elect is notbecause of their works or worthmess, but because of God'ssovereign grace only, the simplest mind can see th a t God mi$'htwithout any violation of principle have ex t ended that sovereigngr ace to other s- - to all, since it was not because of worthinessnor because of works , but merely of uis own volition that anyare saved,-accordin_g- to Calvinism.

The celebrated Jonathan Ed wards, when preaching uponth i s subject in New England years ago, after picturing th eawful torment ef the non-elect was asked the que stion, Wouldnot the thought of the aI)gUish of the lost mar the bliss ofGod ' s people in glory? His answer in substance was, No;you will be so cha nged that such matters will not affect you; youwi ll look over th e battlements of heaven and see in tormentyour neighbors and friends, yea, your own parents and child ren, brothers and sisters, and turn ing round will pra ise Godthe louder because his ju stice is made manifest.

Now, my dear friends, I do not charge any who arehere present with having so false a view of the divine charact er and plan as this . Indeed, I am glad to note that ourCalvinis tic friends in general are repudiating this doctrine ,reali zing tha t the re is in it a serious lack, not only as respects divine love, but also as re spects divine ju s tice. I wasglad some years ago to not o that some of our Presb,Yterianfriends were so moved by higher and nobler conceptions ofth e Almighty that they wished to rid themselves of any partin so blasphem ous a statement respecting his charac ter andhis plan. I wa s sorry, however, that when the matter ofthe re vision of t he Pr esbyterian standards was tak en upit was found that only a minority was in favor of revision, and I was still more sorry to note that that minority of intelligent, god ly people was willing to continue to confessto such a horrible mis-statement of the ir true views-willing, shall I say, to continlle to blaspheme that holy namebecause a majority of their brethren were unwillmg thatsuch blasphemous misrepre sentat ions should be discont inued.

I am glad to believe tha t if th is matter were bro ughtto the intelligent attention of Presbyterians in gen era l alarge majority woul d be found willing, nay , anxious, to undothe wrong and to make such reparation as would b e withinth eir power, by war of honoring the great Jeh ovah and attesting their appreciation of his love and his justice, ~ well

from heathendom. Indeed, according to some good reckonings, the percentage of Christians every year is decreasing, the births of heathen lands so far outnumbering the birthsof Christ ian lands-eve n counting all the children born inChristendom as Christians.

Is any Christian, in view of these facts, prepared to claimthat our God has been doing all that he could do for the conversion of the world? f so , that Christian may as well writeupon his hopes at once the word "Ichabod." f we saw thatthe Calvinistic view magnifies the wisdom and power of Godat the expense of his justice and love, we find on the otherhand that the Arminian view magnifies the love of God at

the expense of his wisdom and powo r. The true Gospelmust show divine Wisdom and Power in full accord withdivine Justice and Love: of any other we must needs beashamed.

    DISTINCTIONS WITHOUT PRACTICAL DIFFERENCE.

But, my dear friends, we may as well now as at anytime con cede that there is comparatively little difference inthe outcome of these two popular Protestant Gospels-thediff erence is merely a theoretical one respecting how th e results are to be reached. The results themselves are the samein both cases-the etern al doom and torment of over fortyseven thou sand millions of human creatures. For our Arminian friends no less than Calvinists agree that there is nosalvation as ide from faith in Christ, the only name given;and they admit also that of those who believe in Christ onlythe sanct.ined are of the real Church ; and their Gospel isalso that only the real Church is to be saved and that allother s are to be eternally and most horribly tormented;some c:laim in literal £lames, others say by the torments andgnawings of conscience and remor se which they proceed tosay will be worse than th e literal flames,-and we respond,if worse , so much worse for the argument.

All will surely agree as respects these two theories orGospels held out to the wo rld by Protestant Christendomth at it would make no difference to the forty-seven thou sandmillions, whether they got into that awful state of hopelesswoe by divine predestination and lack of love and justice ,or by divine incap acity and lack of foreknow ledge and properarrangements. We believe th at no true Christian will beready after examining the su bj ect thus fa r to say t hat hefully appr oves either of these theories, and that he is notashamed of both of them .

    CONSIDER NOW THE TRUE GOSPEL,

Let us now 1;1roceed to examine what is the tr u e Gosl el,presented to us m the Word of God- the Gospel of whichthe Apostle was not ashamed.

The wo rd "gospel.'' itself s h o ~ dbe ~ h eclue-should ~ v ethe intelligent Christian from bei lg tDlsled by the varioustheories of bad tidings of great nusery for nearly all people, miscalled "gospel." He t h i n ~ i n git good news that one out .ofa thousand of the human family 1s to be saved and the ret;na:1n-ing to be eternally tormented, is ither ?O.t a Christian

thous .and out of the families of the earth be blessed, and theremainder be doomed to an indescribably horrible eterni ty,but that the whol.e. Gospel is a Gospel of bles sing, applicable to all the families of the earth-through Christ, the trueseed of Abraham.

When our Lord Jesus was born into the world, the heave nly Father sent a message e s p e c t i n ~hi m , and the angels whobore that message declared that 1t was a Gospe l message.Let u s hearken to what the angels said about the eternaltorment of the vast majority of our race . They said to thes h e p h e ~ d s ,B ~ h o l dwe bring you good tidings [g ospe l] ofg r e a ~Joy. ~ v ~ 1 c hshall be unto all people. (Luke 2:10.)Let 1t be d1stmctly .note d that the Gospel of the angels , likethe Gospel commumcated to Abraham, contains no referenceto the damnation and eternal misery of any of the Lord'screatures, and that consequently our friends of the SalvationArmy and others, who in ignorance preach damnation andcall it the Gospel, are doing so in utter violation of the meaning of th e .word and of all the uses of that word throughou.t th e S ~ n p t u r e s ..H.owever well they may mean , they arc inthis certam ly c o~ t h n ga wrong. a griev1ous wrong. and welong to see the liiht o f the knowledge of th e ~ o o d u e s sofGod shine into their hearts and relieve them of th is blindnes swhich comes not from God nor from his Word but fromthe prince of darkness.-2 Cor. 4 :4. '

It will require all of the Millennial age (w h ich is to followthis Gospe l age in which we live) to bless al l the familiesof t.he earth with the joyful knowledge of divine grace inChrist. Just so surely as the forty -seve n thou sand millionswent down into death without hearing of the Saviour , without coming t o a clear knowledge of the truth, without thegood tiding s of great joy reaching their ears,-just so s u r ~ l ymust they all com e forth from the gra ve that this very Gospel m essage of good tidings may be declared to them, andthat they may be tested thereby and either be accepted toeternal life or de s troyed as unworthy of life, in the SecondDeath. We sa v just so surely , fo r three reasons:

I ) The announcement of the Gospe l to Abraham says,In thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

and all of these forty-seven thousand millions belong to thisvery class speci fied, the families of the ear th-and they havenot vet been blessed with this knowledge of the only namewherein i s the blessing.

    (2) Th e same is true of the messag e by the angels, -the good tidi ngs of great joy is for all people, an d theseforty -seven t hous and millions of humanity are sure ly thegre at bulk of all people.

    (3) We are su r e that this testimony must be given tothem in the future becau se the Scriptural declarati on is that

Christ died for the ungodly; be tasted death for everv

man, and as a consequence every man must have an opportunity granted him for benefitting by that death, and of availing himself of the privilege of eternal life which was sec uredby our Lord's ransom sacrifice.

DID CHRIST DIE FOR THE CHURCH ONLY?

But some one would perhaps say, Christ died only for thesins of the Church and not for the sins of the world, and conseque ntl y the sins of the world cannot be forgiven them.We answer, No; the $criptural declaratioh most positively

is that Jesus Christ by the grace of God tasted death forev ery man , to be testified in due time. And, additiona lly,the Apost le says , He is a propitiation [satisfaction] for our[the Church's] sins, and not for ours only, but also for thesins o f the whol e world. (1 John 2:2.)

What could be plainer than this? the price for thesins of the whole world has been paid to Justice, we may restwell assured that Ju stice will furnish opportunity throµgh theRedeemer whereby all th e se whose sins were atone d for maycome to a knowledge of Christ and to an opportunity of ac·cepting divine grace through him.

Bu t some one will say, Why should God adopt a planwhich w ould necessitate a resurrection of t he dead, and a postresu'rrection trial for eternal life except for all the elect Churchof this Gospe l age?

We answer, - ( I ) I t is not for us to inquire why the Lordadopt s certain plans which differ from those which our poorfinite minds might arrange for him; rather it is fo r us toacknowledge that our wisdom is insufficient on such a subj ectand that we shou ld come humbly t the Lord to hear fr omhis Word whatever he may be pleased to inform us respecting his purp oses . (2) As a matter of fa ct only thos e whoapproach the q u e ~ t i o nfrom this standpoint need e x pect tosee the tr u th or to comprehend wi th all sain ts the lengthsan< breadths and heights and deptlis of the lov e of God.''Eph. 3:18 ; I Cor, 2:12 .

God bas been pleased, however , to reveal to us some ofhis reasons for arranging his plan as we see it. He assu resus of his full wisdom and power to manage every feature ofhi s own work accord ing to h is own good pleasure, assuring usthat he knows the end from the beginning, and that the endwill fully justify every step he has taken. His Word. n o lessthan observa tion , shows us that during all these six thousandyears the world bas been getting a lesso n respecting the exceedi11g sinfulne ss of sin and it s wages of sorrow and death .His Word assures us also that during the ne xt age, the Millennium, t he wh ole w o rld will be br ou ght to a knowledge ofthe way of r i ~ t o u s ns s and love and pea ce, and will seethe d ivine law n practical operation, and witness i ts beneficent
