Blind spots are areas around a vehicle that the driver cannot see because they are hidden by:- Structural parts of the vehicle, like the windshield pillar or

rearview mirrors.- Road infrastructure, such as signs and poles, or trees.- Items placed on the dashboard, stickers on the

windshield, dirty or poorly adjusted rearview mirrors, etc.

KEY FIGURES

In serious accidents involving a truck, one-third of the victims are vulnerable users.

BEST PRACTICES

Source: Belgian Road Safety Institute (BRSI)

Risky behavior on the road by vulnerable users is a key

factor in 28% of blind-spot-related accidents.

Truck drivers

- Be aware of the vehicle’s blind spots.- Regularly clean the rearview mirrors and remove any items

on the windshield or dashboard that could restrict visibility.- Adjust the rearview mirrors properly before starting your trip.- Stay a safe following distance behind the vehicle ahead of

you (three seconds). - Plan your next moves and signal them clearly with the turn

signal.- Check the rearview mirrors regularly and look over your

shoulder before reversing or changing lanes. - Slow down if necessary.- Keep your foot above the brake when you enter a

hazardous area.

Pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists

- Stay out of a vehicle’s blind spot.- Never stop below a rearview mirror. - Make sure drivers see you. If you cannot see the driver’s

eyes in a rearview mirror or through a window, it means that the driver cannot see you either.

- Whenever in doubt, yield priority to the vehicle. - Never pass a vehicle on the right or when it is maneuvering. - Stay a safe following distance behind trucks, especially

when coming to an intersection.
