The Lord is God – Let it be known everywhere that the Lord is God. Even though He appeared
as a man He has still given us the indications of a godlike power and majesty, and that these
indications are evident on many occasions and in a multitude of ways. He drove away diseases
and rebuked unclean spirits. He gave the blind their sight. He even expelled death itself from
the bodies of men, a death that cruelly and mercilessly had tyrannized the race of man from
Adam even to Moses (see Rom 5:14). That widow’s son at Nain arose unexpectedly and
wonderfully! The miracle did not remain unknown to everyone throughout Judea but was
announced abroad as a divine sign, and admiration was upon every tongue. (St. Cyril of Alexandria)

Have you often felt compelled to share your faith
and inspired to participate in the Church's
evangelical mission, but then are not sure how to
go about that? Church leaders and the faithful often
look for the right program with the perfect formula
for evangelization. Effective evangelization,
however, is more of an art than a science, and the
best programs alone won't get us to the finish line.
Join us THIS WEDNESDAY, October 9th, for this practical 3-week series as Fr. Alex guides
us to understand the process of conversion and demonstrates the art of creating room in our
communities for growth into mature and life-giving faith.
Register at: http://easterncatholic.org/events. All webinars will open 30 minutes ahead of time

of Newton. Mark your calendars and plan on

of our Churches? Information is available in the Center. We will register as a group. Please see
JoAnn Hersh to sign-up. Flyers are available in the Center.

Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and His
disciples and a great crowd went with Him. As He
drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who
had died was being carried out, the only son of his
mother…
Today’s Gospel reading concerns the resurrection of
the son of the widow of Nain. We recall that this
miracle occurred just after the healing of the servant
of the centurion, a healing which had taken place at a
distance. If we meditate upon this event we will see that this miracle of resurrection, like all the
Lord’s miracles, happened for two reasons.
First let us remember that as the Son and Creating Word and Wisdom of God, Christ in His
divine nature, had the power to work miracles, restoring the laws of creation as they had been
intended before the Fall, when there was no sickness or death. Through miracles He showed this
power, the unique power of the Son of God. In the particular case of the widow, Christ could
show His divine power and disprove the rumors which no doubt were already circulating, that
the healing of the centurion’s servant at a distance had been a mere coincidence - he would have
recovered anyway.
As our second point we must remember today that this miracle happened because as a human-
being, Christ in his human nature felt pity and had compassion on those who were suffering. In
the particular case of the widow, there was great reason for compassion. In those days a widow
was likely to become very poor unless she was looked after by her children. Now the only son
of the widow of Nain was the only one who could look after his mother. Without him she would
have become destitute, a beggar and perhaps would have died of starvation on the streets.
This miracle proves that the divine power of the Holy Spirit flows not from, but through, Christ’s
all-pure human nature. Christ’s Word and Body are Life-Giving, as is later proved in the Gospels
by His own physical resurrection. Now since the Church is the Body of Christ, this means that
the same power flows through the Church and confers life and healing and resurrection on all
who touch Christ in the Church, participating in the spiritual life of the Church.

Excerpts from Christ Our Pascha
The Fall of the Angels. Other names for Satan (from the Hebrew, the accuser),
who is the antagonist of the Archangel Michael, are the Church Slavonic word
Denytsia (related to the word for daylight), and the Latin word Lucifer (meaning
light-bearer). By his free decision, the former light within him was separated from
its Divine Source and became darkness. Christ also warns humankind of this
danger: “Therefore consider whether the light in you is not darkness” (Lk 11:35). (#144)
The Fall of Humankind. Holy Scripture recounts the story of the Fall of humankind in Paradise,
utilizing the image of the serpent: “Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal
that the Lord God had made” (Gn 3:1). The Holy Fathers perceived in the image of the serpent
the enemy of God and humankind – Satan. The serpent proposed a false divinization to
humankind, suggesting the thought of becoming like God, but without God, by means of one’s
own effort. The devil in Paradise “lured Adam with a vain hope for divinization,” proposing that
he consider the measure of goodness resides not in God but within himself. (#145)
How to Build a Culture of Life Read the full version at respectlife.org/culture-of-life.
Watching the news and reading the headlines, we may feel helpless seeing the heartbreaking
lack of respect for human life. How do we respond? Changing the
culture is a process of conversion that begins in our own hearts. When
we encounter Christ, experience His love, and deepen our relationship
with Him, we become more aware of our own immeasurable worth and
that of others. His unchanging love is the source of our God-given dignity, which, therefore,
cannot be taken away. When someone is facing great trials, we need to walk with them on their
journey, intercede for them, and be open to sharing Christ’s love however He directs. We simply
need to follow where He leads.
Our mission
field is daily life.
