Journalism at WHS is consid-ered a project-based course, not unlike band or drama that create performances throughout a year.

Journalism students work as a team, working and learning together to create and publish a public product.

The objective for Journalism is to have students explore and use the various forms of jour-nalistic writing in real time while producing the Warrior Word, a regular print and digital publica-tion. The Word staff also con-tributes to the Mat-Su Gazette and the Frontiersman’s Schools Page.

The course includes learning and practicing copy rules and respecting the necessity of re-search to add depth and credibil-

ity to writing. Practical expe-rience with graphic design and photography are also available and can go as far as becoming Adobe Certified in InDesign, Photo Shop.

Journalism students are required to sell one ad per semester. This assignment is designed to teach students the business side of jour-nalism as well as support the printing costs for the WORD.

The Word uses maestro approachThe times, they

are a’changin’. and The Warrior

Word responds to today’s journalism with a maestro organization pattern to write, design, and publish news that matters.

Traditional newsrooms run on a hierarchal order. Everyone works independently until it ends with the lay-out. The maestro organization uses all of the same roles, but works as a team.

The Word’s news teams decide on the angle, audio visual facts, photos, and the page design. Each team produces two or more stories per printing and for the digital site www.whswarriorword.com.

The stories go through copy-edits with the entire team before going to the team’s managing editor- a Journalism II student- for final review and approval.

Journalism II students are responsible for a variety of articles, the majority of the Gazette submissions, Schools Page submissions and managing the news teams.

Students are responsible to attend class regularly , on time and prepared just as if in the workplace. They are responsible to seek the truth and work to minimize harm. They are expected to act independently. This includes challenging themselves to do their best and to learn as much as they can.

As members of the Warrior Word students are held responsible for what they say, what they write and what they do.

The Word uses google docs, Google Classroom , and a shared folder on

the school server to manage its files. Reporters are required to file final stories in the google doc folder and the shared file.

All rough drafts are in the shared google drive to allow access for collaborative editing. All copy is in standard font between 10-12 point font. The copy should be saved as Headline. Byline.Issue #

Reporters use the district portal for apps.google. docs available in Student Links on the district website. The login for the district app is the reporter’s usual school login. Email is assessable for students through this app as well.

Every week, on Mondays, a

Digital files essentialThe Word depends on sharedfiles, GoogleClassrom

weekly exercise in grammar and journalism is assigned in the Journalism course in Google Classroom, found in the students apps.google account.

The topics have a wide variety, from photojournalism to current event opinions to AP Style quizzes. All topics are taught using print source newspapers, the AP Style Guide, and Jim Striesel’s High School Journalism, a practical guide. An online textbook through www.ckh.org is also used for reading and activity assignments.

Skill assignments are weekly and account for 20% of the grade with 50 points weekly.

GOALSJournalism is story-

telling with a purpose. A good news story is judged by not only how much it engages its audience, but by how much it enlightens it.

The goals of Journal-ism I and II include:

1. To teach the necessary journalism skills with emphasis on journalistic style writing, including interviewing, reacting and synthesizing. 2. To provide oppor-

tunities for critique

3. To understand and accept the responsi-bilities inherent in a free press and become an intelligent consum-er of mass media.

4. To learn copy rules and prepa-ration of copy

5. To develop re-sponsiblity in meet-ing deadlines.

6. To develop the verbal, written, per-sonal and social skills necessary in publishing a school newspaper

7. To learn how to present news in an appealing manner, including headlines, alternate infographics, and photography

8. To offer an op-portunity for cre-ativity not found in other classrooms

9. To encourage an awareness of the world around us, both social and political

10. To stimulate an interest in journal-ism as a career.

We have read and understand the nature of the course Journalism:

• • Journalism is a project based course. The

class writes and publishes The Warrior Word in both print and digital format. It is a part-ner in the publication of to the Valley-wide Mat-Su Gazette, and submits regularly to the weekly Schools Page in the Frontiersman.

• Journalism is dependent on profession-al work ethic, timeliness, and team work.

• Journalism requires regular work outside of class, either with writing or attending events.

• Journalism requires the appropriate use of shared files and online communication.

• Journalism requires weekly homework above and beyond the Word reporting

• Journalism requires one ad sold per semester.

biography

Istarted my teaching career in Dulce, New Mexico on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. I relocated in 1983 to the Mat-Su Valley and began teaching at Snowshoe Elemen-

tary School.Since those early years, I have taught 3rd grade through col-

lege. I am married and my husband and I have raised two daugh-ters, both graduates of Colony High School and alumni of UAA.

I began teaching at Wasilla High in 2014 when the Journalism position became open. I grew up in a newspaper family three generations deep of newsmen and publishers. I have written for and coordinated the Frontiersman’s School Page since 2005. I enjoy writing as an amateur and have performed for Palmer Mu-seum’s Untold Stories. I was honored with BP Teacher of Excel-lence in 2016. When I am not working on writing or the Warrior Word, I run some, hike some, fish some, garden some, and play with our aging border collie.

2016 marks the third year for the Wasilla High Warrior Word. We have grown from the pioneering skeletal staff of nine stu-dents to over 20 students in Journalism I and a core group of Journalism II students. These enterprising students have helped the WORD grow from a simple digital site, to three print issues, to six or more annual issues and a robust website.

The WORD enjoys a collaboration with Colony High’s Knightly News while we work together to publish the bi-annual Mat Su Gazette, a 16 page newsmagazine insert in the Frontiers-man. We also work with WHS’s Digital Media class, CHS, and Radio Free Palmer to broadcast Teen Talk, an hour long radio talk show.

I believe that the cornerstone to our country’s democracy lies in the free press, and the cornerstone to our children’s success is the ability to read, write and communicate with sharpened tools in our increasingly complicated world. If all goes well, your chil-dren will not only be better readers and writers at the end of Journalism I or II, they will be better thinkers.

Thank you for all your support, Emily Forstner
