Join us for an unconventional exploration of contemporary art, craft, design, and architecture, rendering this beautiful city in ways that you’ve not seen it before! Over the past decade, the city and its artists have transformed our nation’s seat of government into a more vibrant, multi-cultural urban environment that not only welcomes artistic innovation, but also engenders and fosters it. Our trip is timed to include Preview Night at the Smithsonian Craft Show and the newly re-opened Renwick Gallery as well as the vastly expanded Glenstone, the art-filled 200 acre estate and preeminent private collection of Emily and Mitch Rales. Having undergone major additions and considerable media attention, this vast collection of postwar and contemporary art features works by Serra, de Kooning, Kelly, Rothko and many more luminaries. Our itinerary includes visits with internationally recognized artists and major private collectors. Among the many highlights, look forward to:

n A curator-led tour of the Wonder Exhibition at the newly re-opened Renwick Gallery featuring original installations by nine major contemporary artists, each exhibiting in his/her own gallery space! The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum showcases the finest work in craft and design.

n The Preview Night Benefit Cocktail Buffet at the annual Smithsonian Craft Show held at the National Building Museum; we’ll be among the first to see and purchase before it opens to the public!

n A visit to Capitol Hill to meet the Chief Curator at the Library of Congress, the world’s largest library and the city’s most awe-inspiring interior. We’re invited to the private reading room and archives to see the splendid mosaic works and brilliant frescoes in this, the most elaborate government building in the city.

n A coach tour of D.C.’s iconic memorials led by the Architect of Record for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial who collaborated with designer, Maya Lin; we’ll stop to explore the F.D.R. and Martin Luther King Memorials among other artful favorites.

n A highlight tour of the permanent collection of costumes at the Textile Museum in its new location at George Washington University.

n A Curator-led tour of Turquoise Mountain: Art and Transformation in Afghanistan at the Sackler Gallery; this recreation of the market stalls in Old Kabul will feature demonstrations of the country’s art, craft, and design in 21st-century contexts.

n An architectural tour of the iconic buildings on the National Mall, including Watergate and the Smithsonian Castle, as well as a highlights tour of buildings designed by prominent architects including Mies Van der Rohe, Michael Graves, Marcel Bruer, and David Adjaye.

n Meeting the Curator of the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum to visit the Luce Foundation Center for American Art. There, we’ll see a collection of decorative art, sculpture and craft and enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at the Smithsonian’s Conservation Lab.

Studio visits with . . .

n Foon Sham, internationally renowned Chinese American sculptor and professor, who earned his B.A. at the California College of Arts and thus, shares a special affinity with our group!

n Betsy Stewart, international multi-media artist, who explores microscopic subjects in brilliant, polychromatic sculptural works.

n Dalya Luttwak, whose monumental painted-iron sculptures have been shown recently at the Venice Biennale and the Triennale in Milan.

As always, visits with some of D.C.’s top collectors will be highlights of our itinerary... along with a few surprises still to be confirmed!

Early in the new year, we’ll have updated predictions of the exact timing of the cherry blossoms; however, we can promise that a newly invigorated art, craft and architectural experience awaits us next April when our nation’s capital re-awakens to welcome the glories of spring! Plan to join us and reserve promptly as space is limited.

HEALTH RESTRICTIONS & DISABILITIES

OMCA does not discriminate on the basis of disability, medical condition, genetic information, or any other prohibited basis. Participants requiring the assistance of an attendant because of a disability or medical condition must provide their own attendant and register him/her as a participant for the Guild Trip and pay all costs associated with the attendant’s participation in the Guild Trip. OMCA reserves the right to prohibit any individual from participation in a particular Guild Trip if the individual’s disability or medical condition cannot be reasonably accommodated. Finally, Participant represents that all relevant allergies and needs for accommodation that would or could affect the Participant’s participation in the Guild Trip are identified below.

CODE OF CONDUCT AGREEMENT

If Participant is excluded from participation or otherwise departs a Guild Trip early for

any reason, Participant is responsible for any and all costs associated with an early departure, including but not limited to medical evacuation, travel, and compensation and expenses for any person or persons accompanying Participant.

RELEASE AND WAIVER

Participant hereby releases and forever discharges OMCA and the Guild, their predecessors and successors in interest, assigns, affiliates, subsidiaries, insurers, officers, directors, agents, representatives, attorneys, employees, partners, contractors, vendors, joint venturers, volunteers, and trustees from any and all claims, demands, causes of action, obligations, damages, and liabilities of any nature whatsoever, whether legal or equitable, whether or not known, suspected or claimed, arising out of or relating to the Participant’s participation in the Guild Trip, to the fullest extent permitted by law. Without limiting the scope of the foregoing, this release applies to any damage, injury or loss to any person or property that results from the ordinary negligence of OMCA or any of the other parties released herein this Agreement. Participant agrees to defend, indemnify and hold harmless OMCA and the other parties released from all claims, demands, causes of action, obligations, damages, and liabilities made by any third party arising out of or relating to the Participant’s participation in the Guild Trip. Participant agrees to pay all fees, damages, and costs, including attorneys’ fees that OMCA or other parties released may incur in the enforcement of this Agreement. Pursuant to California Civil Code section 1668, this release does not apply to claims for gross negligence, or intentional acts or omissions, fraud, or violation of statutory rights.

SECTION 1542 WAIVER

The purpose of the above release and waiver is to enable Participant to participate in a Guild Trip which involves certain inherent risks. Because neither OMCA nor the Participant can know what specific injury or harm may arise until it happens, OMCA is asking Participant to waive certain claims in advance other than those caused by gross negligence or intentional acts or omissions, fraud or violation of statutory rights. In order to do that effectively under California law, a waiver of Civil Code section 1542 is necessary.

Therefore, Participant agrees that he or she waives the application of the following provision of California Civil Code section 1542 as it relates to any and all unknown claims Participant may have against OMCA or the other parties released involving Participant’s participation in the Guild Trip. Participant certifies that he/she has read and understands the provisions of section 1542 that he/she is waiving, which provides:

A general release does not extend to claims which the creditor* does

not know or suspect to exist in his or her favor at the time of executing the release, which if known to him or her must have materially affected his or her settlement with the debtor*.

*for the purposes of this release “creditor” is the traveler and debtor is any of the herein released.

The Participant understands that in waiving the protections of California Civil Code section 1542, he or she is waiving the right to bring claims for ordinary negligence against OMCA and the others released herein, including claims that are currently unknown to the Participant.

GENERAL INFORMATION

All of the above constitutes the Agreement between Participant and OMCA (collectively, “Parties”) and governs participation in the Guild Trip and supersedes any prior agreements or understandings. This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of the State of California without regard to conflict of law provisions.
