NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM PRESENTATION & TOUR Date: Saturday, January 14, 2017 Time: 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Place: Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Washington, D.C. The Maryland Society of Professional Engineers (MDSPE) Potomac Chapter is inviting the ASME to two events on Saturday January 14, 2017 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. At 11am, a special presentation on the Revitalization of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum will be given by Rick Flansburg, Deputy Associate Director, Management and Public Programs. The Museum will essentially be rebuilt from floor to ceiling while open for business. The Museum is the most visited Air and Space Museum in the world with about 8 million visitors per year. The attendance to the presentation is limited to 40 people. The presentation will last about 1 hour and be held in the Education Briefing room in the basement of the Museum. Please RSVP with the names of everyone in your group (required by security). Lunch will be on your own. At 1pm, a special guided tour of the Museum will be given starting at the visitors’ services center. Please RSVP for the tour, with the number of people in your group (names not required). Families, friends, and guests are welcomed. If interested in attending either or both events, please RSVP to Bruce Cranford, PE at [email protected] by no later than January 7, 2017. Date: Saturday, February 18, 2017 Time: 8:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. OR 12:30 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. Place: National Building Museum Washington, D.C.

We currently have a need for volunteers from the ASME membership. We are seeking six (6) professional members and six (6) college student members to help demonstrate and explain various wave phenomena to children and adults as part of Discover Engineering Family Day. There will be two shifts (morning: 8am-12:45pm and afternoon: 12:30pm-4:45pm), with six volunteers to each shift, equal distribution of professionals and students. NOTE: Times include helping with setup (1st shift) or cleanup (2nd shift), and a 15-minute overlap for volunteer handover between shifts. Please direct responses for volunteering to Kaykham Sysounthorn, Executive Advisor for the Washington, DC section, at [email protected].

TOUR OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS On November 16, 2016, the DC Section hosted an evening tour of the Library of Congress, led by LOC Facility Manager and DC Section member Kevin Hornberger. We were able to tour parts of all three LOC buildings: the original Jefferson Building (opened in 1897), with its arch and dome architectural elements; the Adams Building (1939), with the art deco elements of that period; and the Madison Building (1980), with a rooftop view of the Capitol. Afterward, the Section hosted a relaxing networking get-together at Sonoma lounge nearby, for which most of the tour attendees were able to stay. The Section's thanks go out to Mr. Hornberger, for sharing his knowledge of the buildings and their inner workings that he has gained over his ten years working for the Library.

COLLEGE CAREER PANEL On November 30, 2016, four local ASME members served on an evening Career Panel at the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, DC. They provided insights and advice from their years of experience and answered students' questions on the value of internships, graduate degrees, and getting a PE license (all strongly encouraged!). Course selection, changing between industries, and other topics were also discussed. Roughly 30 students and the Student Section faculty advisor attended. The DC Section appreciates the participation of the panelists: Barney Gorin, PE; Bruce Cranford, PE; Ray O'Toole; and Bill Haight, PE. We also thank student section co-president Grace Brodeur for handling the logistics of setting up a successful event. The continued support of the Washington, DC Section members makes these events possible.

Keith Roe Discusses the Transformation of ASME at the President’s Luncheon

During his speech at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) in Phoenix last month, ASME President Keith Roe discussed the pivotal juncture the Society stands at today as it embarks on its new strategic path. This path will focus on development of five technology areas—manufacturing, clean energy, bioengineering, pressure technology, and robotics. Eight other key enabling technology areas, including the Internet of Things, big data analytics, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity were also identified as highly important to innovation and the expansion of the Society.

Four new Presidential and Sector Management Committee task forces will be formed to support the new strategy—Group Engagement and Alignment, Increasing Industry Leadership Engagement in ASME, Increasing Engagement of Student, Early Career and Digital Mechanical Engineers in ASME, and Strategy and Planning.
