Lexington, Virginia

“My favorite thing in Gaines is the rotunda. It is the perfect spot to study with hallmates and friends. It seems to bring people from other places on campus to study. I love how spacious, social and beautiful Gaines has become.”

—Parker Kellam ’17, Onancock, Va.

RENOVATIONS TO FIRST-YEAR HOUSING

In the last two years, major improvements to Washington and Lee’s first-year housing have been completed. The total renovation of Gaines Hall was completed in 2014, and by summer 2015, the renovation of Graham-Lees residence hall will be finished. Both buildings offer doubles and singles, and they

include comfortable lounges, alcoves and other wonderful new spaces for students to gather, study, do laundry, play Xbox or just hang out.

The end result of these projects will be beautiful accommodations for first-year students to call home. They are in the very center of campus, a short walk from classes, the Commons and dining hall, the fitness center, downtown Lexington — virtually everything needed to make the most of the W&L experience. EXCITING HOUSING PLANSESPECIALLY FOR UPPER-DIVISION STUDENTS

Washington and Lee is making big plans to improve housing choices for upper-division students and to ensure that all first-year students, sophomores and juniors will live on campus in Univer-sity housing. This exciting improvement involves the construction of new housing options that will be completed by September 2016.

The new residential neighborhood will be located near the historic Liberty Hall Ruins (a favorite spot on campus) and the University’s outdoor athletic fields,

including Wilson Stadium. Both apart-ment-style housing and townhouses are included in the plan. Built specifically for upper-division students, they will emphasize independent living, yet will preserve and enhance the close-knit, residential character of W&L.

The new housing will be only a short walk from the central campus and will include informal gathering spaces indoors and out, as well as areas for outdoor activities and recreation and common green spaces. Individual units will include four to six single bedrooms with full kitchens. Stay tuned for more information as this exciting project moves ahead in the coming year.

“One of the best parts about being a first-year is living so centrally on campus. You are in the middle of all the action as soon as you walk out your door.”

—Jamie Davis ’14, Bradenton Fla.
