Communiqué from the4th WASHEQ4th WASHEQCONFERENCE 2015
Safety Advocacy & Empowerment Foundation in conjunction with SHEQ Foundation successfully organized the 4th West African
Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (WASHEQ) Conference and Exhibition, held in Lagos, Nigeria on the 5th of
December, 2015 on the theme “Driving Change, Creating Value….from Vision to Action.
The WASHEQ Conference and Exhibition is an annual gathering of stakeholders in the area of Occupational Safety, Health,
Environment and Quality across industries in West Africa to deliberate and learn best practices in SHEQ (Safety, Health,

Environment and Quality), to help reduce workplace accidents and safeguard our environment for future generations. This year,
the event was powered by Nile support services who ensured a smooth and successful conference.
Representatives from Government Agencies including National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency
(NESREA), Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), Lagos State Fire Service and attended the conference. Representatives from
HSEQ Professional bodies such as the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), World Safety Organization (WSO),
American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), International Association of Safety Professionals (IASP), International Institute of
Risk & Safety Management, Nigerian Red Cross and Corporate Institute of Risk & Safety Management (CIRSM) also attended theRisk & Safety Management, Nigerian Red Cross and Corporate Institute of Risk & Safety Management (CIRSM) also attended the
conference.
There were presentations from fifteen (15) speakers that represent the “best of the best” in Occupational Health & Safety,
Quality and Environment from Nigeria, Ghana and Republic of Benin. Several issues HSEQ issues were identified and solutions
provided by the speakers and participants. Dr Oyet Gogomary, the HSE Manager of Oando presented on creating a Culture of
Personal Accountability & compliance: A tool for Improving Safety Culture using his own personal experience from Oando on how to
improve the safety culture in work places, other topics covered included Kaizen (making small improvements), Urban Mining(
environmental impact of urban mining All sessions were designed to empower the work forceenvironmental impact of urban mining. All sessions were designed to empower the work force.
It was also concluded that, to drive a change that will create value in Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Ghana and the rest of West Africa
states, professional synergy will play critical role to enhancing operational excellence, sustainable safety culture and business
continuity.
Furthermore, participants agreed that the Government, Organisations and HSEQ professionals must work together to improve on
Safety accountability, operational processes, value creation with respect to HSEQ, value attached to lives, environmental
sustainability e-waste management sustainable consumption and production and HSEQ legislationssustainability, e-waste management, sustainable consumption and production, and HSEQ legislations.
Participants expressed profound appreciation to both Safety Advocacy & Empowerment Foundation and SHEQ Foundation for the
immense professional benefits the conference offered. The event was covered by the Safety Record newspaper.
Excellent partnerships and alliances were established and continued support for SHEQ Foundation and Safety Advocacy &
Empowerment Foundation will ensure that we can continue to provide a place and time each year for the WASHEQ conference
where personnel can be empowered . All the attendees agreed to meet in Ghana in 2016 for the 5th West African Safety Health
