Case Studies

1. Govt. Primary School Basti Waja where only hygiene promotional and capacity building

activities are being implemented. WinS team organized couple of meetings with SMC

and teachers to motivate them to focus on WASH issues in their school. This school

does not have even a single latrine before intervene the project, Team sensitized the

SMC members and teachers about WASH merits and demerits and they agreed to

construct the latrine but availability of budget was an obstacle. When Punjab

government approved Non Salary Budget (NSB) for schools, school management

constructed two new latrines in school on priority basis. Annual budget are usually

supposed to be spent on white wash, principal room renovation, repairing of furniture’s

and plantation purposes etc, but project intended the school custodians to avoid the

open defecation and importance of latrine.

2. A 15 year old Mushtaq Ahmed belongs to a poor family and living with parents along

with 5 brothers, 1 sister and grandmother in basti sumandri. He is studying in

government high school basti sumandri in class 6th. His father is small village shop

keeper and living in deprived condition.

Hope for Change One day I was in my class room my WASH club teacher suggested to our

class that Muslim Aid team wants to orient you about Health & Hygiene. I had bit idea about

the WASH club their work and activities but I could not get chance to participate in any

session, so it was my first time. One person form Muslim Aid started orientation about health

& hygiene, usage of latrines, hand washing and many other good messages with showing

pictorial chart of each message. It was a glimpse to think about the importance of latrine

in my life. My concentration had developed about good hygiene practices and then I

noticed the wall painting which were painted by MAP and I was just steering on that cartoon

hygiene messages which I never noticed before. I felt some one behind me and turn around

then I have seen that My grandmother was behind me and asked me with wonder that what

I am look at then I told whole story of today’s activity on the way back to home and told

about all the messages which I got form MAP team. When I get back to home then I decided that today I will discuss the availability of latrine

within our house compound with my father and my grandmother promise me to support

me in this concern. At night I discussed the matter with my father along with whole story of

today’s school activity. My father smiles and said that from beginning we are using open

defecation and it’s not a serious matter. He told that it is just to spoil the money which I

cannot afford. Then I replicated all the messages to all my family which I got form MAP team

and told about the low cost latrine preparation and then my grandmother also added that

how it is embarrassing for females to use open defecation so it is the time to change our bed

habits and norms after a long discussion of my father with my grandmother and mother he

agreed to construct latrine. I was really pleased to share all this story to MAP team and

WASH club fiends. For some days persistently remind to my father about his promise and a

day came when we have construct latrine in our house. It’s my ambition to make safe and

clean my home, school and village.

“It’s just need a little hope that this won’t forever that thing will change”.
