After World War II, the architects were given the task of rebuilding Warsaw in a new style of design: “socialist in content and national in form.” Discover the architectural heritage of socialist-realism in Warsaw with a visit to the Palace of Cul‑ture and Science, having been given by Stalin as a gift from the Soviet Union to the Polish nation. Walk around Parade Square, built to host the propaganda-filled speeches of the leaders of the People’s Republic of Po‑land. Then, go to the Marszałkowska Housing District and explore Constitution Square with its impressive sculptures from the 1950s. To feel the spirit of the past era, try a visit to one of the remaining milk‑bars, fast food canteens from that time, offering inexpensive, home-style traditional Polish cooking, and enjoy their unique atmosphere. Warsaw is a salubrious and refreshing destination because a quarter of the city is made up of green areas. There are 160 leafy squares and 76 parks, of which the biggest and most beautiful is the Royal Łazienki Park and palace complex, con‑sisting of 187 acres of parkland in the middle of the city. Each of these green areas has its own special something, and come together to make Warsaw a truly green city.One special green area is the right bank of the Vistula River, which is marked by its unspoiled, natural habitat. The right bank is completely wild and protected by the Natura 2000 programme, meaning that beavers, terns and even elk can be found there. Indeed, both banks of the river are considered to be the summer centres of the city. Here you can relax on one of the six municipal beaches, rent sporting equipment, go on a bicycle tour along the river, or take a cruise on a traditional wooden boat. From May to September, there is also a free shore-to-shore ferry service.The recently modernised Vistula Boulevards are very popular among walking enthusiasts. Nearby, not far from the Royal Castle, there is a Multimedia Fountain Park, where many cultural events take place, such as Wianki, the summer solstice festival in June, and the Feast of the Vistula in September.

We enter a for‑gotten port and finish our trip at a natural beach in the Praga district. Here we can look out on an amazing panoramic view of the Old Town.

After sunset, Warsaw dresses itself in sparkling, colourful lights and glowing neon signs, which were very popular in com‑munist times, and are now making their way back to the streets of the capital. See the historic buildings and monuments, churches and bridges illuminated in the twilight, and mingling with the lights and colours of the city’s nightlife. Visit Nowy Świat and Foksal Streets, packed with bars and pubs, where you can have a shot of Polish vodka or a glass of locally brewed beer.
