Warriors,We want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Second to None New Year! We have experienced a remarkably demanding
year in 2018. Throughout all the missions and activities, our Warriors have stood watch and maintained maximum readiness. I can’t tell you enough how proud Command Sgt. Maj. Barretto and I are of all our troopers!
The holiday season is a special time and many will be separated from their families back home. The good news is that your Warrior and Army family is right here with you and the memories you make while serving your country on the Peninsula is something all should look back on over time and be very proud of. You are the keepers of peace and prosperity and there is no more noble a profession that sacrifices for the benefit of others.
This year we accomplished much. In executing the sixth Armored Brigade Combat Team rotational deployment to Korea, we safely conducted the largest equipment movement since 2014 to align deployed forces with current Army-wide modernization and readiness efforts.
We also completed the historic movement south of the Division headquarters to our new home at Camp Humphreys, after having spent 53 years at Camp Red Cloud in Uijeongbu. Enduring friends from Dongducheon, Pyeongtaek, Seoul, and Uijeongbu joined our Warrior Division family as we officially opened the new Freeman Hall.
We will enter 2019 with more modernization ahead. Our UH-60L fleet will be replaced with UH-60Ms giving our aviators the best equipment available. We will keep after making our Soldiers as ready and able to ensure our Fight Tonight readiness.
From the most junior to the seniors among us, we must take care of and pay attention to our fellow Soldiers. Check on your buddies and look after yourselves to ensure we all safely ring in the New Year ready, and even more restored than we were in the year before.
Enjoy the half-day schedule…and make plans to explore new places in Korea throughout your time in the Warrior Division. From MWR trips to local cultural happenings or to other events on base, there is a lot to see and do. So, be safe, be responsible, and be resilient. Keep pressing on!
Second to None!

Warrior Division Soldiers learn about a historic, train tunnel exit near Musan-ni. There were many legends and stories surrounding the tunnel that was last used before the start of the Korean War. In 1967, “bullet-scarred” walls were the only evidence left of its use during the Korean War.
DeceMBeR 1990Republic of Korea President Chun Doo-Hwan paid a visit to the 2nd Infantry Division headquarters at Camp Casey in December 1983. Maj. Gen. Henry Doctor Jr. was the 2nd Infantry Division commander.

ASK THe DOCClues to Beat the Holiday BluesBy Capt. Joseph D. Dragonetti2ID/RUCD PsychiatristSpending the holiday season away from home can be difficult. It’s a common
challenge encountered by 2nd Infantry Division Soldiers during wintertime. Policies limit the amount of Soldiers that can take holiday leave, and due to time differences, it’s difficult to make phone calls to loved ones in the states. Fortunately, there’s a lot that Soldiers, families and civilians stationed in Korea can do to beat the holiday blues.
Try some of these ideas from Warriors currently stationed on the Korean Peninsula:
Maintain your holiday traditions – even if it feels different without family or friends around. Keeping up with your personal traditions, such as decorating, cooking, giving gifts, or getting together with friends can lift your spirits and help strengthen bonds with your peers.
Start new traditions – talk to your peers and find out what they like to do for the holidays. Consider joining their activities, or even starting brand new holiday traditions!
Take a whiff – find a candle, food or other aroma that reminds you of pleasant holiday experiences. Of all senses, the sense of smell has the most potent ability to bring back good memories.
Be active – whether it’s indoors or out. Make sure to stay active, even if you’re not doing unit physical training over the holidays. Exercise is nature’s most powerful antidepressant!
Catch up on sleep – take advantage of the decreased workload to get your sleep habits back on track. Turn in early a few nights, knowing that you’ll have plenty of time during the next day to do whatever you want.
"What is your New Year's resolution?"WarriorS oN the Street
"In 2019, I plan on making my move from Green to Gold. I want to become an officer. "
"I believe I have what it takes to be a great leader and the passion needed to lead Soldiers from the front."

“First and most importantly, I am looking forward to returning home and being with my family."
"Second, earning my bachelor’s degree and beginning my masters."
"Third, the opportunity to join the master sergeant ranks and to continue leading, educating and mentoring Soldiers."
“I’ve been here two months. I like the scenery, the sunsets.”
“I want to get in better shape to do better on the PT test.”
“I want to earn my E-5, keep progressing in the Army, try to get a little more responsibility and help other Soldiers.”
“My New Years resolution is to be able to run under a 12-minute two mile."
"I am going to run every day and sprint hills to get my time down to a standard I’m satisfied with."
(U.S. Army photo by Spc. Adeline Witherspoon, 2IDSBDE Public Affairs)Maintain a schedule – even though it may sound like work. Keeping a
schedule of enjoyable activities will help you ensure that you make the most of your downtime and don’t wind up feeling bored or lazy.
Get outside – the cold air sometimes discourages people from outdoor activity, but sunshine and being in nature are scientifically proven to help lift mood. It’s crucial to get outside and do something active, whether that’s going for a walk or playing sports with peers.
Take a Korean vacation – take advantage of your time here! Most destinations in the Republic of Korea are close enough to be day trips, and there’s something for everyone, whether you want to sightsee, explore the cuisine, be outdoors or learn about Korean culture and history.
Use community resources – groups such as ACS, MWR and USO are always hosting activities that cater specifically to Soldiers that are unable to travel home for the holidays. Check out their websites or social media feeds for all the details, don’t miss out!

THE INDIANHEAD30
CAMP CASEY, Republic of Korea – Each year, Soldiers from the 2nd Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Divisionhost their annual burning of the colors ceremony to commemorate the Korean War Battle of Kunu-Ri.
This year’s 68th anniversary ceremony took placenear the actual battlefield here Nov. 30 during the Sapper Steel Battalion’s nine-month rotation in support of 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division.
“The Battle of Kunu-Ri was not one night or one day; it was a five-day struggle against overwhelming odds,” said Lt. Col. Michael T. Loftus, 2nd Eng. Bn. commander from Spencer, Massachusetts. “I can really appreciate the weight of the history and how much weight that, not only the veterans of the Korean War, but also from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s place in the value of this battalion being the tip of the sphere defending freedom, and it’s an incredible feeling and awesome responsibility that I feel almost every day.”
The Sapper Steel Battalion was 2nd Infantry Division’s organic engineer unit, which served as the blocking force, defending their position against a Chinese assault, allowing American forces to depart the area.
“This is about the veterans and we still have veterans who have not been found and are still unaccounted for from this battalion and every time we repatriate remains, that’s one more Soldier that’s coming home.” said Loftus. “To think that Lt. Col. Zacherle made that ultimate decision 68 years ago to burn his colors rather than allow them to be captured. I can’t imagine what it would take to have the presence of mind to make that decision today in a similar situation.”
Prior to Chinese forces overrunning their position, former 2nd Eng. Bn., commander Lt. Col. Alarich Zacherle, ordered all equipment destroyed and the battalion colors burned to prevent the Chinese from capturing it as a war trophy.
Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Stevenson, 2nd Eng. Bn. operations sergeant and Fort Myers, Florida native, spoke of the unimaginable odds that Sapper Steel Soldiers faced the night of the battle and what it took for them to fight on afterwards.
“In my opinion, the people who endured this are the real heroes because they fought this battle and walked back… wounded in the freezing cold and still
reformed and fought again, those are my heroes,” said Stevenson. The Soldiers who participated in this year’s ceremony were participating in a
demonstration that resonated never giving up, no matter the circumstances.“This ceremony demonstrates to us and these Soldiers is that just because you face
difficult odds, you still have a chance to gain honor and win,” said Stevenson. “We continued to fight and still fought until the end of this war and fought on other wars afterwards.”
Cpt. Charlie Bierwirth, a logistics officer assigned to 2nd Eng. Bn. and Redding, California native, said this ceremony is one of the most memorable experiences any Soldier will have in their career because the terrain and weather here is the same as it was 68 years ago.
“This ceremony commemorating them (Sapper Steel Soldiers) burning their colors drives home the amount of sacrifices made by Soldiers in the Korean War and all other wars,” said Bierwirth. “Every war and every battle has history behind it and this ceremony commemorating them burning their colors tells the story of this battalion’s history.”
Pfc. Briar Christensen, combat engineer, Company B, 2nd Eng. Bn. from Castle Rock, Colorado, felt honored to participate in this ceremony on Korean soil.
“It’s special to be here in Korea to honor the Soldiers who fought in this battle and a memorable event for the veterans and the families of those who’ve since passed away,” said Christensen. “It’s also special to be part of this ceremony over here because this could be the last time our battalion comes to Korea and be able to do this ceremony.”
This year’s commemoration of a historic battle adds to the battalion’s history because of their recent Korean rotation.
“I was a lieutenant with this battalion when it was stationed here and had the opportunity to do the 50th anniversary of the battle,” said Loftus. “It means so much to me because this may be the last time this ceremony is held over here. I know it means so much to the veterans and their families that the colors are once again on the Korean Peninsula.”

SEOUL, Republic of Korea – A U.S. Army aircraft and its crew, assigned to 2-2 Assault Helicopter Battalion, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 2nd Infantry ROK/U.S. Combined Division, provided initial incident response and assistance upon witnessing a Republic of Korea firefighting helicopter crash into the Han River, east of Seoul Dec. 1.
Capt. Julia McKusick, Alpha Company, 2-2 AHB commander and Colleyville, Texas native, and 1st Lt. Melissa Taylor, the UH-60 pilot-in-command and Topsfield, Massachusetts native, were flying a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter on their way to a field training exercise around 11:30 a.m. when they observed the crash.
“I was the pilot in command of the helicopter. When we saw what happened, there was no doubt in my mind we needed to do everything we could to help out that crashed helicopter crew,” Taylor said.
Taylor and her team were the first to witness the crash. They remained, hovering overhead, and contacted the Seoul Airbase traffic control tower. They reported the helicopter’s tail number, which allowed incident responders to quickly identify the downed aircraft and its crew. The pilots also reported seeing two people emerge from the aircraft in the water.
Soon after the crash, rescue boats arrived and the U.S. aircraft resumed movement to their destination, McKusick said.
“There’s an assumed kinship between all aviators, regardless of whether they are Korean or American,” said Lt. Col. Keith Sandoval, 2-2 AHB commander. “I feel fortunate Capt. McKusick and 1st Lt. Taylor were there to provide such a quick response and render whatever aid they could to our fellow Korean aviators.”
Soldiers from 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade train regularly so they can be ready to provide critical assistance on the rare occasion of a helicopter mishap. The safety of Republic of Korea citizens and U.S. Army aircrews and Soldiers are top priorities for the brigade, which is why frequent, tough, and realistic training is necessary.
“We were surprised, but we’ve trained for these types of scenarios, and we knew exactly what we needed to do,” McKusick said. “Our immediate concern was getting help to the crashed helicopter crew.”
Also on the UH-60 Blackhawk were Sgt. Tereon Dorsey, College Park, Georgia native, and Pfc. Shane Palitza, Frisco, Texas native, both UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter repairers.
The 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade is headquartered at Camp Humphreys, Republic of Korea and is a part of the 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division. The 2nd CAB’s mission is to provide superior air support to ROK and U.S. ground forces.

CONSTITUTION
The 6th Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment can trace its history back to 5 July 1918 when the 37th Field Artillery Regiment was organized at Camp Lewis, Washington. The Regiment was demobilized on 11 February 1919. On 1 October 1940 it was reactivated and designated as a truck-drawn 105mm howitzer battalion at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
HISTORY/2ID RELATIONSHIP
The 37th Field Artillery Battalion was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division during World War II and participated in the following campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Alsace, and Central Europe. Three hundred and thirty days and 198,000 rounds af-ter D-Day, World War II ended for the 37th Field Artillery near Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. In the years following World War II, the Battalion remained with the 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington, as a general reserve unit.
During the Korean Conflict, the Battalion landed at Pusan on 4 August 1950 with the 26th Infantry Division and fought in the battles of Heart Break Ridge, Old Baldy, T-Bone Hill and Pork Chop Hill. During the 4 years of action, the Battalion participated in the following ac-tions: UN Offensive, UN Summer Fall Offensive, Second Korean Winter, Korean Summer Fall 1952, Third Korean Winter and Korean Summer Fall 1953.
After the Korean Conflict, the Battalion was again stationed with the 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis and later at Fort Richardson, Alaska. While in Alaska, the 37th Field Artillery Battalion was relieved 20 June 1957 from assignment to the 2nd Infantry Division and concur-rently reorganized and redesignated as the 37th Artillery, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System. Its individual companies were either inactivated or redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Batteries of newly activated battalions in the Regiment. 6th Battalion, 37th Field Artillery was activated on 2 May 1960 at Fort Benning, Georgia, and in August 1965 returned with the 2nd Infantry Division to Korea.
