II. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

This manual provides operating instructions aswell as cleaning, maintenance, and storageprocedures for the Sperian WARRIOR high andlow pressure SCBA. You must read andunderstand these instructions and be properlytrained before using the SCBA in a hazardousatmosphere.

The Warnings, Cautions, and Notes contained inthis manual have the following significance:

• The user is responsible for establishing thatthis equipment is suitable for the user’sapplication.

• For respiratory protection, this SCBA must beworn and used as specified in Sperian’sinstructions. No protective equipment canprovide complete protection from all conditions.Use extreme care for all emergency operations.Do not use the WARRIOR SCBA alone for anyfire fighting, hazardous material operation, orCBRN response operations; additional protectiveclothing and equipment are required forprotection. Always use in conjunction withpersonal protective ensembles that provideappropriate levels of protection against dermalhazard. This SCBA may cease to provideprotection if used during excessive heat orflashover conditions harsher than those inwhich it has been tested. Users must clean andmaintain this SCBA only in accordance withSperian’s instructions. Accessories or replace-ment components not certified for use with thisSCBA may degrade performance or make thisSCBA unsafe, or void NIOSH certification, andmust not be used without Sperian's writtenconsent. The user must read, understand, andfollow the accessory installation and operationinstructions before using this SCBA in ahazardous environment. Only Speriancomponents shall be used with this SCBA.Failure to comply shall void the warranty andNIOSH approval.

• Your Sperian respirator has been constructedof materials selected after careful considerationfor their performance, safety, and durability. However, all materials have exposurelimitations to flame, extremes of heat and cold,or to the many chemicals in use today. Nomaterials exist that can be used safely in all ofthese environments.

Maintenance or operating procedures andtechniques that may result in personal injury, illness, or death if not carefully followed.

CAUTIONMaintenance or operating procedures and tech-niques that may result in damage to equipmentif not carefully followed.

NOTEThe NIOSH CBRN Approved Cautions andLimitations are located on page ii and page 40of this manual, and must remain permanentlyaffixed. If the NIOSH CBRN Approved Cautionsand Limitations are not present, contact your localSperian representative or safety officer for areplacement manual.

All Sperian-certified technicians are required toremain current on new procedures and partsthrough Sperian’s published Technical Bulletins, technical manual revisions, and certificationclasses.

NOTEMaintenance or operating procedures and tech-niques or information considered importantenough to emphasize.

• Exposure to atmospheres containing CBRNagents may cause the SCBA to be exposedto excessive CBRN agent levels. Althoughthe WARRIOR SCBA will prevent penetration andpermeation of specific concentrations of CBRNagents, there could be environments that arecontaminated with CBRN agent levels thatexceed the NIOSH CBRN test protocol concentra-tions. This is a particular concern in confinedspace environments. Proper quantification of theCBRN agent contaminated environment isrecommended prior to entry.

• Our engineers cannot predict what willhappen to this equipment in every potentialenvironment. Materials can be chemicallyattacked if exposed to the wrong environmentand may exhibit excessive corrosion or otherforms of damage. Permeation of gases andliquids through the materials could beexcessive. Flame or extremes of temperaturemight cause thermal degradation. Each of thesethings, or a combination of them, could createconditions in which this Sperian equipmentwould be dangerous to use.

• This respirator will reduce, but will noteliminate, the inhalation of contaminants. Before allowing anyone to enter a hazardousenvironment while wearing Sperian equipment, you must conduct safe, scientific tests todetermine if the environment could render theequipment unsafe. Results of this testing shouldbe well documented. Seek the help of a certifiedsafety professional or industrial hygienist. DONOT USE this equipment if the user wouldbe endangered in any way throughenvironmentally induced degradation of thematerials in the apparatus.

• All persons using the Sperian breathingapparatus must be made aware of its limita-tions. We cannot be responsible for any damageto property, personal injury or death in whichenvironmental exposure is a contributing factor.

• This respirator does not protect exposed areasof the body. Some contaminants can beabsorbed directly through the skin while othersmay irritate exposed areas. Always use inconjunction with personal protective ensemblesthat provide appropriate levels of protectionagainst dermal hazards.

• Visual indications of material degradationmay be identified by charring, blistering, cracking, crazing, pitting, chalking, rust, andsignificant color changes, all of which can resultin a weakened structure, prohibiting extendeduseful service life.

• Do not wear this respirator if a satisfactory fit,as determined by the fit testing described insection VI., cannot be obtained. Also see ANSIZ88.2 latest edition and OSHA respiratorStandard (29 CFR 1910.134).

• Beards and sideburns will prevent a goodfacepiece seal. Do not use this respirator unlessyou are clean shaven.

• This respirator must be used in conjunctionwith a written respirator program meeting therequirement of the OSHA Standard forRespiratory Protection, 29 CFR 1910.134,available from the U.S. Department of Labor,Occupational Safety and Heath Administration. The program must include, but not be limited to,procedures for evaluating air contaminants andselecting the appropriate respirator; proceduresfor testing the facepiece-to-face fit of respirators;procedures for cleaning, disinfecting, inspecting, maintaining, and storing respirators; proceduresfor determining if workers are physically andmedically capable of wearing respirators; andprocedures for training employees in the useof respirators and in recognizing the hazardassociated with contaminants in the workplace.

• Do not use this respirator underwater or forabrasive blasting.

• This SCBA is designed for storage intemperature from -25°F to +160°F.

Page 10: WARRIO R CHEMICAL,BIOLOGICAL,RADIOLOGICAL ......This manual provides operating instructions as well as cleaning, maintenance, and storage procedures for the Sperian WARRIOR high and

• Sperian respirators, accessories, andassociated equipment should not be used inatmospheres which may contain contaminantconcentrations above the lower explosivelevel (LEL). Intrinsic safety certification ofelectronic components does not eliminatepotential danger from ignition in theseatmospheres.

• The pressure within the Sperian facepieceremains positive under most working condi-tions, but as with all SCBAs, negative pressureexcursions are possible. Conditions when anSCBA can experience negative facepiecepressures include, but are not limited to: 1) theSCBA is improperly worn, 2) the SCBA is notused in accordance with the instructions, 3) theSCBA is improperly maintained, or 4) the SCBAis over-breathed during heavy work rates. TheSCBA will provide reduced protection whenoperated in a negative pressure mode.

• Some sensitive individuals may experiencehealth problems when exposed to even minuteamounts of contaminants. This SCBA will notprevent health problems for those individuals.

• Persons sensitized can have a severe reac-tion to chemicals at levels such as the OSHAPermissible Exposure Limit (PEL), ACGIH®

Threshold Limit Value (TLV®), or NIOSHRecommended Exposure Limits (REL). Do notuse this SCBA if you have been sensitized fromprevious exposure or believe that you may besensitive or allergic to any chemicals (e.g.,organophosphate, isocyanates, latex, etc.).

• Do not alter or modify this SCBA in anymanner. Modifying this SCBA will void NIOSHcertification and may create a condition inwhich the SCBA would not provide theintended protection. Do not remove, obscure,or alter any labels on the SCBA.

• Some individuals are sensitive to chemicals(e.g., isocyanates, latex, oil mists, etc.) or mayhave some type of respiratory disorder (e.g.,asthma, chronic obstructive airway disease,etc.). If you are sensitive to any chemical orhave a respiratory disorder, you may have asevere reaction at contaminant levels wellbelow accepted health levels, such as theOSHA Permissible Exposure Limit value, or theNIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit (REL).Many chemicals (e.g., isocyanates, mercury, etc.) have no physical warning properties andyou cannot taste or smell the contaminantseven though they may be present in thefacepiece. This SCBA will reduce, but will noteliminate, the possibility of contaminantsentering the facepiece and causing a severereaction. Do not use this respirator under theseconditions.

• Discontinue use if you experience skinirritation or discoloration.

• You must read, understand, and follow allwarnings, instructions, labels, Material SafetyData Sheets (MSDS), etc., for the materials youare using (e.g., paints, hardeners, insecticides, varnishes, etc.). You must also read, under-stand, and follow all warnings, instructions, etc., listed in the MSDS for any contaminantsthat may be or are present in the work area.

• An impact to the second stage regulatorwhen the cylinder valve is open may inadver-tently activate the First-Breath-On mechanism, causing air to flow from the regulator anddiminishing the air in the cylinder.

• ONLY grasp the cylinder valve handwheel toopen or close the valve; DO NOT pick up orcarry a cylinder by the handwheel, drop acylinder on the handwheel, or bump thehandwheel, as this may cause the cylindervalve to inadvertently open, which may leadto the cylinder becoming airborne under thethrust of air released from the open valve, causing injury or death. ALWAYS pick up andcarry an air cylinder by the cylinder body.

Page 11: WARRIO R CHEMICAL,BIOLOGICAL,RADIOLOGICAL ......This manual provides operating instructions as well as cleaning, maintenance, and storage procedures for the Sperian WARRIOR high and

WARRIOR™ Operation Manual

• DO NOT over-torque air cylinder valves.ALWAYS verify that the hydrostatic test facilityperforming your cylinder testing DOES NOTover-torque the cylinder valves when theyreinstall them.

• Some CBRN agents may not present immedi-ate effects from exposure, but can result indelayed impairment, illness, or death.

• Direct contact with CBRN agents requiresproper handling of the SCBA after each useand between multiple entries during the sameuse. Decontamination and disposal proceduresmust be followed. If contaminated with liquidchemical warfare agents, dispose of the SCBAafter decontamination.

• The respirator should not be used beyond six(6) hours after initial exposure to chemicalwarfare agents to avoid the possibility ofagent permeation.

• Prior to using the WARRIOR SCBA for the firsttime, you must perform fit testing as describedin section VI. Do not wear this respirator if asatisfactory fit, as determined by the fit testingdescribed in section VI., cannot be obtained.

• FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE WARN-INGS MAY LEAD TO PERSONAL INJURY,ILLNESS, OR DEATH.

IV. DESCRIPTION

9

The WARRIOR SCBA provides the wearer withrespiratory protection in hazardous environments, and may be used for entrance into and escapefrom atmospheres that are immediatelydangerous to life or health (IDLH). The WARRIORSCBA is an NFPA and NIOSH CBRN-compliantSCBA, and may be used for fire fighting and/orCBRN incident response.

• The WARRIOR SCBA meets all requirements ofthe NFPA 1981 Standard, 2007 Edition, Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus forEmergency Services.

• See NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire DepartmentOccupational Safety and Health Program, forproper use of SCBAs in the work environment.

• The WARRIOR SCBA meets the requirements ofthe NIOSH CBRN standard and has been grantedNIOSH CBRN approval. The NIOSH CBRNapproval label is located on the lower backsection of the backpack frame, underneath thecylinder valve.

A. Backpack and Cylinder

1. The backpack consists of a lightweightaluminum backplate with an aluminum hip-platethat both swivels and hinges on the backplate. Thebackpack has three integrated carrying handleswith carabiner attachment points. The cylinder isattached by a stainless steel band, and has arelease latch on the right hand side (when lookingat the cylinder with the valve pointing down), andan adjustment latch on the left hand side. TheWARRIOR harness is made of Kevlar straps. Thepressure gauge, mounted on the right shoulderstrap, is integrated with the PASS device on unitsequipped with a PASS, and is a standardchest-mounted gauge on units not equipped with aPASS. The gauge indicates the cylinder pressure

once the cylinder valve has been opened. Theintermediate pressure hose is routed over theleft shoulder, and includes an optional electri-cal/pneumatic quick connector in line, whichallows easy removal of the second stage regula-tor from the SCBA. Connection of the quick-con-nect automatically connects the electronicsrequired for the Heads-Up Display (HUD).

2. The air cylinder is a composite constructionwith an aluminum inner liner overwrapped by ano metallic fiber, and has a maximum workingpressure of 4500 psig (high pressure) in 30-, 45-and 60 minute durations; 2216 psig (low pressure)in 30-minute duration; an all-aluminum cylinderand Fiberglass composite hoop-wrapped or 3000psig (low pressure) in 30-minute duration isavailable.

B. First Stage Regulator

1. The first stage regulator contains:• A pressure reducer.• Primary low air alarm activation and

adjustment mechanisms.• Intermediate pressure connections to thesecond stage regulator and audiblealarm.

•High pressure connections to the HUDtransducer, remote pressure gauge, and the universal air connection.(See section G of this manual.)

2. The first stage regulator lowers cylinderair pressure to a nominal 115 psig. Therelief valve activates to protect the systemwhen the regulator pressure exceeds 200to 225 psig.

• Failure to comply with this Warning may leadto personal injury, illness, or death.

Not all components and accessories approvedfor use on the Panther CBRN SCBA areapproved on the WARRIOR SCBA. You mustcheck the NIOSH approval label inserted withthis manual for components and accessoriesapproved for use on the WARRIOR SCBA.Failure to comply with this Warning may leadto personal injury, illness, or death.

3. The first stage regulator is connected to aplain whistle, a warbling whistle, or a bellalarm. The alarm is located at the upperleft corner of the backpack, protected byan impact-and thermal-resistant enclosure. The low pressure SCBA audible alarmactivates at 510 to 598 psig (2216 psigsystem), or 690 to 810 psig (3000 psigsystems); the high pressure SCBA audiblealarm activates at 1035 to 1215 psig(4500 psig systems). The audible alarmwill continue to sound until the air pressuredrops below 200 psig.

1. The HUD is mounted on the second stageregulator. When the second stage regulatoris installed in the TwentyTwenty Plusfacepiece, the display can be seenthrough openings in the facepiecenozzle cover. When the cylinder valveis opened, the HUD will activateautomatically, and will indicate the airpressure remaining in the cylinder. Thedisplay consists of four green LEDs,representing Full, 3⁄4 , 1⁄2, and 1⁄4. At fullcylinder pressure, all four LEDs areilluminated. As the air pressure in thecylinder decreases, the LEDs turn off oneat a time, thereby indicating the airpressure status. When the pressure dropsbelow 50% of cylinder capacity, the LEDrepresenting 1⁄2 cylinder capacity starts toflash, and continues to flash for a shorttime (approximately 20 seconds) beforereturning to continuously lit. When thepressure drops to 1⁄4 (25%) of cylindercapacity, the last green LED turns red andbegins to flash, thereby giving the user avisual alarm of low pressure in addition tothe audible alarm located at the upperleft of the backpack. On a 2216 psigSCBA, the 1⁄4 LED will turn red and begin toflash between 510 and 598 psig; on a3000 psig SCBA, the 1⁄4 LED will turn redand begin to flash between 690 and 810psig; on a 4500 psig SCBA, the 1⁄4 LED willturn red and begin to flash between 1035and 1215 psig. When the pressure dropsto 10% of cylinder capacity, the red LEDbegins to flash noticeably faster andcontinues flashing in this manner until airpressure drops below approximately 200psig, at which time the display will turn off.No lighted LEDs represents zero airpressure.

2. An external red LED, mounted on the frontof the HUD module, warns others of theuser’s low air status by flashing at thesame time the 1⁄4 LED is flashing inside theHUD module. The external red LED flashesnoticeably faster when the pressure dropsto 10% of the cylinder capacity. A redLED at the upper right of the backpackperforms the same functions.

3. A photodiode is mounted externally on thetop of the HUD module. It senses ambientlight conditions and adjusts the intensity of

• You must use a CBRN facepiece when usingthis SCBA in a potential or known CBRN con-taminated atmosphere. Use of a facepiece otherthan a CBRN facepiece will void NIOSH CBRNcertification.

• If the low battery alert activates (amber LEDon the backpack-mounted transducer moduleand front PASS flashes every two seconds)during storage, or if the amber LED on thebackpack-mounted transducer module andfront PASS do not flash at all during storage, thebatteries must be replaced before using theSCBA.

• Activation of the visual alarm (flashing redLED) portion of the HUD may or may notcoincide with the audible alarm (i.e., whistle, warbling whistle, or bell) on the SCBA. Assoon as the first alarm activates, PROCEEDIMMEDIATELY TO A SAFE AREA.

• You must have binocular vision (vision fromboth eyes) to see and interpret the displaycorrectly. Your visual acuity while wearing thefacepiece must meet the requirements set forthby the authority having jurisdiction over youroperation and/or work place.

• Failure to comply with this Warning may leadto personal injury, illness, or death.

the green HUD LEDs to match theseconditions. If the ambent light is bright, theLEDs are in bright mode. In no-light orlow-light conditions, the LEDs are in dimmode so that they are not distracting tothe user.

4. The transducer module on the backpackand the front PASS have an amber LEDthat acts as a battery status indicator. When the SCBA is in storage (the cylindervalve is not opened), the amber LED willflash once every 10 seconds to indicate ausable battery condition. The amber LEDflashes every two seconds to indicate alow battery condition, and will ceaseflashing altogether to indicate a deadbattery.

5. To replace the batteries, first remove theprotective rubber cap, then remove theslotted battery cap located on the lowerright hand side (when looking at thecylinder with the valve pointing down) ofthe backpack, using a coin, a large, flatblade screwdriver, or the male end of thewaist strap buckle; remove the oldbatteries; install new batteries in theorientation shown on the lower cover justabove the battery cap area; and replacethe cap. Screw the cap down until theamber light on the battery status indicatoron the HUD transducer module begins toflash. Reinstall the protective rubber cap.

D. Chest-mounted Gauge (Installed onWARRIOR SCBA if no PASS device is installed)

The chest-mounted pressure gauge ismounted on the right shoulder strap andmay be swivelled 360° for easy viewing. When the cylinder valve is opened, thegauge indicates the air pressure remainingin the cylinder.

E. Second Stage Regulator

The pressure demand second stageregulator is mounted on the facepiece bythe Sperian AIR KLIC™ system. Themechanism automatically locks in placewhen the regulator is pushed into the AIRKLIC, and is detached when both of therelease buttons are pressed. To preventinadvertent air flow, the regulator will notoperate until the First-Breath-On mechanismis activated or the manual overridebutton on the front of the regulator ispressed. The flow of air can be stopped bypressing the shutoff button. A large redknob on the right side of the regulatorcontrols an adjustable bypass valve. Turningthis knob counterclockwise provides aconstant flow of air.

F. Facepiece

An impact to the second stage regulator whenthe cylinder valve is open may inadvertentlyactivate the First-Breath-On mechanism, causing air to flow from the regulator anddiminishing the air in the cylinder. Failure tocomply with this Warning may lead to personalinjury, illness, or death.

• If the battery alert in the HUD activates duringactual use (amber LED at the lower right of thedisplay flashes once every second), the SCBAmay continue to be used. The batteries must bereplaced before the next usage.

• Failure to comply with this Warning may leadto personal injury, illness, or death.

You MUST use a CBRN facepiece (2720XX or2420XX) when using this SCBA in potential or

• Duracell alkaline MN1400 C size batteriesmust be used in the battery compartment inorder to maintain the intrinsic safety certificationof this product.

• Failure to comply with this Warning may leadto personal injury, illness, or death.

A. Fit Test Instructions for Facepieces Usedwith SCBA with NIOSH CBRN Certification

1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions forperforming quantitative fit testing usingthe Sperian 962900 APR adapter toconvert an SCBA facepiece to negativepressure operation. Sperian recommendsthat the Sperian P/N 962920Quantitative Fit Test Adapter be used toprovide a means for drawing a samplefrom the interior of the facepiece for thefit test. This adapter has the advantageof allowing the fit test to be performedwith the actual facepiece assigned to theperson tested. These instructions assumethe P/N 962920 is used for the fit test;however, users may provide their ownmeans of sampling from the facepieceand may use surrogate facepieces for fittesting.

2. Applicable CBRN Facepieces

The Sperian facepieces approved for usewith CBRN-certified SCBAs, andaccessories approved for use with thosefacepieces, are listed on page 15. A fittest must be performed with either:

a. A facepiece equipped exactly like thefacepiece to be worn with the SCBA, or

b. A facepiece equipped with all of thelisted accessories, to simulate worstcase.

3. Facepiece Selection

Select a small, medium, or largefacepiece. Most people will achieve agood fit with a medium size facepieceand should try that size first. But if yourface is small or large, you may want tostart with a small or large size. You willhave the opportunity to check the sealof the facepiece and to wear it forseveral minutes (to determine comfort)before the Quantitative Fit Test (QNFT) isstarted.

• The respirator should not be used beyond six(6) hours after initial exposure to chemicalwarfare agents to avoid the possibility of agentpermeation.

• Prior to using the WARRIOR CBRN SCBA for thefirst time, you must perform fit testing asdescribed below.

• Do not wear this respirator if a satisfactory fit,as determined by the fit testing described below, cannot be obtained.

• Failure to comply with this Warning may leadto personal injury, illness, or death.

VI. OPERATION

To ensure an adequate fit, each person who willwear a CBRN-certified SCBA must pass a quantitativefit test with a minimum measured fit factor of500 while wearing a facepiece of a size andconfiguration exactly like the facepiece that will beworn with the SCBA. To simulate the weight of thesecond stage regulator as used with an SCBA, usethe Sperian P/N 962900 APR Adapter equippedwith Sperian 1050 P100 filters.

Page 21: WARRIO R CHEMICAL,BIOLOGICAL,RADIOLOGICAL ......This manual provides operating instructions as well as cleaning, maintenance, and storage procedures for the Sperian WARRIOR high and

WARRIOR™ Operation Manual

14

To determine if you have selected a sizethat fits:

a. For facepieces with a Headnet, fullyloosen the lower headstraps. Forfacepieces with headstraps, fullyloosen all five (5) headstraps.

b. Pull the Headnet or headstraps overthe top of the facepiece so that theyare in front of the lens.

c. While holding the facepiece by thenozzle, bring the facepiece up to yourface and put your chin into the chin cup.Make sure there is nothing, includinghair, between your face and the seal-ing area of the facepiece. Push thefacepiece against your face.

d. Flatten your palm so that you close offthe inlet and inhale lightly to check theseal. The vacuum created by inhalingwill slightly collapse the facepiecetoward your face. If a good fit isachieved, the facepiece should remainlightly collapsed until you exhale oruntil you take your palm from theopening (This whole process only takesabout two or three seconds. Don’t holdyour breath much longer than that anddon’t pull a very strong vacuum. Theidea is to see if the facepiece will sealagainst a small amount of air pressure.)

If a good fit was achieved, proceed to sectionIV. If you felt a leak when the mask wascollapsed toward your face, select a differentsize facepiece and repeat steps a. through e.above. If you cannot get a fit with any size, then install a “Facepiece with Temple InsertKit,” P/N 962150 (small), P/N 962153(medium), or P/N 962154 (large) into thefacepiece that fit the best, and repeat stepsa. through e. above. If you still felt a leakwhen the facepiece was collapsed towardyour face, install a different size “Facepiecewith Temple Insert Kit,” and repeat steps a.through e. above. If you still cannot get a fitwith any of the temple inserts installed, youcannot proceed.

4. Assemble Adapter, Facepiece, andFilters for Fit Tests

Assemble the Quantitative Fit TestAdapter and filters to the APRAdapter and facepiece according tothe instructions provided with theP/N 962920 Quantitative Fit TestAdapter Kit.

• The purity of the RIC UAC air source must meetthe requirements set forth in the CompressedGas Association Commodity Specification forAir, G-7.1, Type 1, Grade D, with a dewpoint notgreater then -65°F (-53.9°C), or less than 24 ppmby volume.

• The relief valve on the first stage regulator isfactory set. Tampering with the relief valve maycause the SCBA to malfunction or may result ina decrease in service life.

• If at any time during filling, an air leak isdetected or suspected in the SCBA or the fillsystem, disconnect the fill hose from the SCBA.Close the cylinder valve on the fill cylinder andvent the air from the fill hose. Remove the SCBAfrom service for inspection and repair by aSperian-certified technician before use.

• The dust covers on the RIC UAC coupling andthe RIC UAC fill hose must be installed at alltimes unless the SCBA cylinder is being filled viathe RIC UAC.

• Failure to comply with this Warning may leadto personal injury, illness, or death.

The Sperian RIC UAC is intended to be used withthe P/N 968970 RIT Kit, purchased separately. The P/N 968970 UAC RIT Kit is equipped with ahigh pressure fill hose that is compatible with theRIC UAC coupling on the first stage regulator. TheP/N 968970 RIT Kit is capable of accommodatinga 60-minute high pressure cylinder.

Although it is possible to add air to a SperianSCBA via the RIC UAC system while the SCBA isbeing worn, Sperian recommends that the cylinderbe placed in a container or in a location which isdesigned to restrain fragments in the event of acomponent failure during filling. Filling an SCBAcylinder while the SCBA is being worn should onlybe done when the circumstances justify exposingthe SCBA user to the added risk associated withthe fill procedure.

First stage regulators equipped with the RIC UAChave a pressure relief valve (PRV) incorporatedinto the first stage regulator housing. The PRV isdesigned to vent air to atmosphere when the fillpressure exceeds the service pressure of thecylinder. The PRV will reset (close) at a pressurebelow the service pressure of the SCBA. If a highpressure (4500 psig) fill (supply) cylinder is usedon a 2216 psig SCBA, the PRV may open and ventair to atmosphere.

NOTEAir venting from the PRV is extremely loud.

5. Filling is complete when the pressure inthe SCBA cylinder and in the fill cylinderare equalized. This will take place inapproximately one minute.

contaminated conditions and not active engage-ment of the RIC UAC to mated non-CBRNapproved air line components. Failure to complywith this Warning may lead to personal injury, illness, or death.

• NEVER use the RIC UAC for routine filling ofSCBA cylinders. The UAC is intended to be usedfor cylinder filling during rescue operations only.

• Never use the Sperian RIC UAC to fill an SCBAcylinder while the SCBA is being worn unlessthere is compelling reason to assume the risk ofinjury if there is a component failure during thefill process.

• Never use the Sperian RIC UAC to fill an SCBAair cylinder while the SCBA is being worn if theSCBA or the cylinder is suspected of havingbeen dropped, exposed to direct flameimpingement, or damaged in any way.

Inspect the exterior ofthe cylinder for dents, gouges, or cuts whichhave penetrated and caused separation orunraveling of the composite overwrap.Watch for evidence of exposure to hightemperature, such as darkened or blisteredpaint, charred overwrap or decals, meltedor distorted gauge lens, etc.

3. Cylinder Valve

The cylinder valve should also be examinedfor obvious damage, such as a deformedhandwheel, inaccurate or inoperativepressure indicator, damaged threads on theoutlet connection, or other evidence ofimpact or exposure to extreme heat. Ifinternal contamination is suspected, removethe cylinder valve and inspect the interior ofthe cylinder. The cylinder valve overhaulcycle is as follows:

a. For all aluminum or carbon compositecylinders, overhaul the valve at everyhydrostatic retest (5 year cycle).

b. For fiberglass composite cylinders, overhaul the valve at every otherhydrostatic retest (6 year cycle).

4. Additional Information

a. Additional information on cylinderinspection and maintenance can be foundin CGA pamphlet C-6, "Standards forVisual Inspection of Compressed GasCylinders," CGA pamphlet C-6.1,"Visual inspection of High PressureAluminum Cylinders," or CGA pamphletC-6.2, "Guidelines for Visual Inspectionand Requalification of Fiber ReinforcedHigh Pressure Cylinders," availablefrom the Compressed Gas Association,Inc. If there is any doubt about thesuitability of a cylinder to recharge, itshould be returned to a certifiedhydrostatic retest facility for expertexamination and retesting.

b. A comprehensive listing of all licensedhydrostatic test stations is available fromthe Department of Transportation.

B. Filling Procedures

1. Air Purity

Unless safety and health codes in your areaspecify otherwise, air cylinders should berefilled with compressed air meeting thepurity requirements for Type 1, Grade DGaseous Air as specified by the CompressedGas Association Commodity Specificationfor Air, publication G-7.1. The moisturecontent, expressed as dewpoint, shall bemaintained at -65°F (-53.9°C) or lower, orless than 24.0 ppm by volume moisturecontent. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCESSHALL AN AIR CYLINDER BE FILLED ORPARTIALLY FILLED WITH OXYGEN.

2. Maximum Fill Pressure

Composite and aluminum cylinders may befilled only to the service pressure indicatedon the cylinder label. Composite andaluminum cylinders must never be filled to apressure greater than the marked servicepressure.

• Do not fill any cylinders that are damaged, yoususpect may be damaged or unsafe, or are out ofconformance with applicable hydrostatic testdates. Damaged cylinders must be inspected byan approved hydrostatic test facility and repairedas required before being filled.

• DO NOT over-torque air cylinder valves.ALWAYS verify that the hydrostatic test facilityperforming your cylinder testing DOES NOTover-torque the cylinder valves when theyreinstall them. Failure to comply with thisWarning may lead to personal injury, illness,or death.

NOTEWhen the SCBA is being used for fire fighting,it is recommended that the cylinder be filledwith air meeting the requirements of NFPA1989.

assure that the cylinder is charged to full servicepressure. Place the cylinder in a suitable safetysleeve or filling area.

A. Facepiece Cleaning

• It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that thecleaning process chosen provides adequatedisinfection or decontamination.

• Specialized processes are required to disinfectand decontaminate a respirator. You MUSTfollow the instructions of the manufacturer whosupplies the disinfecting or decontaminationequipment or chemicals.

• In the absence of a commercial sanitizingproduct, the hypochlorite solution described inthe steps below will eliminate many, but not all, biohazards.

• Failure to comply with this Warning may leadto personal injury, illness, or death.

CAUTION• DO NOT clean the facepiece with theregulator, RCS, or VAS attached.

• You must ensure that this respirator is notdamaged by disinfecting or decontaminationequipment or chemicals.

• The facepiece lens can be scratched throughcareless or abusive handling. DO NOT useabrasive cleaners or pads. DO NOT towel dry.

• Cleaning or bleaching solutions containingchlorine will damage the Headnet.

3. Filling Procedure

a. The fill station must be constructed andequipped in accordance with applicablestate industrial safety codes.

b. The cylinder may be partially immersed(DO NOT submerge the cylinder valve) ina water bath to minimize the temperaturerise that occurs as the cylinder is filled. The fill hose should be equipped with arestraining cable to prevent uncontrolled“whipping” in case of hose failure.

c. After connecting the fill hose, open thecylinder valve fully. A separate meteringvalve must be used to control the fill rate.Fill the cylinder slowly, at a rate notexceeding 500 psig per minute. (Usecaution if faster recharging rates areused.) After the initial filling, allow thecylinder to cool to room temperature, then "top off" the cylinder to achieve fullservice pressure.

d. Use particular care to ensure that an aircylinder is never connected to a sourcecapable of supplying air at a pressuregreater than the maximum servicepressure of that cylinder.

e. Close the cylinder valve when thecylinder is full.

f. Slowly bleed pressure from the fillinglines.

g. Disconnect the filling lines.

4. Storage

Air cylinders should be recharged as soon asis practical after use. Cylinders should not bestored partially charged, for two reasons:

a. If used without recharge, the serviceduration of the apparatus is reduced.

b. The safety relief device is designedspecifically to protect a fully chargedcylinder from the effects of a fire or frommechanical shock.

For maximum safety, the cylinders should be storedfully charged.

If the cylinder is stored empty and the valve is inad-vertently left open, humid atmospheric air may enterthe cylinder and result in interior corrosion.

If a self-contained breathing apparatus is to bemaintained in "standby" mode, i.e., available forimmediate emergency usage, the cylinder pressuregauge should be checked at least once a month to

Sperian recommends a "change of season"inspection and increased attention to yourpreventive maintenance during cold weatherconditions. The following recommended inspectionsand procedures will help prevent cold weatherproblems; however, cold weather conditions mayalso cause other problems not listed below.

1. Air Supply

a. Test compressor(s) for air quality anddewpoint prior to the cold season.

b. Recharge the cylinders with Grade D orbetter air conforming to CompressedGas Association Specification G7.1.Moisture content, expressed as dewpoint, shall be maintained at -65°F (-53.9°C)or lower, or less than 24.0 ppm byvolume.

c. Prevent any moisture from entering theSCBA.

d. Remove ice and water from cylindervalve threads prior to filling incold weather conditions.

2. Facepiece and Exhalation Valve

a. The facepiece must be protected frommoisture during cold weather conditionsto reduce ice formation on the facepiecelens, in the AIR KLIC, and in theexhalation valve.

b. Prior to donning the facepiece in coldweather, visually inspect the lens, AIRKLIC, and exhalation valve for ice.

c. If ice is present, warm the facepiece tomelt the ice. Ice may be melted byplacing the facepiece inside outerwearnear the body to warm.

d. Check the function of the exhalationvalve by performing a positive pressureexhalation test and negative pressureleak check as follows:

e. Don the facepiece as specified in theDonning section of this manual.

f. Perform a negative pressure leak check:

i. Place your hand over the AIR KLIC.

ii. Inhale and hold your breath for a fewseconds. The facepiece shouldcollapse on your face and remaincollapsed for several seconds withoutleaking.

iii. If the facepiece leaks, exhale onto theexhalation valve at least six to eightmore times. Reposition the facepiece, check the straps, and repeat the leakcheck.

iv. If the facepiece continues to leak, remove it from service.

v. Have the facepiece inspected and/orrepaired by a Sperian-certifiedrepair technician before reuse.

g. Perform a positive pressure exhalationtest:

v. If the exhalation valve continues tomalfunction, remove the facepiecefrom service.

vi. Have the facepiece inspected and/orrepaired by a Sperian-certifiedrepair technician before reuse.

h. Again, visually check to verify that thefacepiece, lens, AIR KLIC, and exhalationvalve are ice-free.

NOTE• Moisture can cause regulator system freezingproblems even if the ambient air temperatureis above freezing. The air flowing from theSCBA cylinder through the regulator systemdecreases from cylinder pressure to nearatmospheric pressure very rapidly. As thispressure decreases, the air rapidly expands, causing the air and therefore the regulator tocool.

• Although the ambient temperature may beabove 32°F (0°C), the temperature inside theregulator system may be considerably lower(below freezing).

• Sperian recommends that SCBAs used on aroutine basis or SCBAs kept for emergency usebe stored at temperatures above 32°F (0°C).SCBAs stored at temperatures below 32°F(0°C) may need to be warmed to at least 32°F(0°C) prior to use if ice has formed on the lowpressure alarm, facepiece exhalation valve,AIR KLIC, and/or quick disconnects.

NOTECold weather conditions require very dry air.Moisture entering the SCBA may cause icingand equipment malfunction.

NOTEIf the facepiece has been stored at a temper-ature below freezing (32°F or 0°C) and it isnot possible to warm the facepiece prior tousage, do not exhale into the facepiece until itis properly donned and the regulator isinstalled and activated.

XI. FUNCTIONAL TESTING TABLE

1. Don and adjust the facepiece.2. Block the AIR KLIC opening with the palm of your hand.3. Inhale gently. The facepiece should collapse slightly and hold for a few seconds

without leaking.4. Exhale with the AIR KLIC opening covered. The exhalation valve must not stick.

1. Push the shutoff button on the second stage regulator to stop the flow of air.2. Open the cylinder valve to fully pressurize the regulators.3. Close the cylinder valve.4. Observe the gauge/alarm for 15 seconds. Significant needle movement indicates

a leak, and the SCBA should not be used.

1. Open the cylinder valve to fully pressurize the SCBA.2. Close the cylinder valve.3. Press the shutoff button on the second stage regulator to stop the flow.4. Slightly open and close the bypass valve to stop the gauge pointer at each 1⁄4 mark

for 2 seconds.5. Continue to open and close until the pointer moves slowly to the 1⁄4 FULL mark.6. The audible alarm should begin when the gauge reaches approximately 1⁄4 FULL.7. When the audible alarm begins, close the bypass valve.8. The alarm should continue until the air is almost depleted.9. Bleed all residual air.10. Close the bypass valve.

1. Open the cylinder valve to fully pressurize the SCBA.2. Close the cylinder valve.3. Press the shutoff button on the second stage regulator to stop the flow.4. Slightly open and close the bypass valve to stop the LED display at each 1⁄4 mark for 5

seconds.5. Continue to open and close the bypass valve slowly until the HUD display reads

1⁄2 full.6. Verify that the 50% warning is working correctly (the green LED representing 1⁄2 cylinder

pressure should blink on and off for approximately 20 seconds, then staylighted continuously).

7. Continue to open and close the bypass valve slowly until the HUD display reads 1⁄4 full. The audible and visual alarm should begin when the display reaches approximately 1⁄4 full.Activation of the visual alarm (flashing red LED) portion of the display may or may notcoincide perfectly with the audible alarm (i.e., bell, whistle, etc.) on the SCBA.

8. When the audible alarm begins, close the bypass valve.9. Both alarms should continue until the air is almost depleted.10. Bleed all residual air.11. Close the bypass valve.

1. Attach the CGA handwheel to a fully charged cylinder.2. Close the second stage regulator bypass valve and depress the shutoff button.3. Slowly open the cylinder valve.4. Check that the cylinder valve gauge and gauge/alarm both read in the green zone.5. Attach the second stage regulator to the facepiece and inhale. The regulator should deliver

an acceptable flow of air without excessive effort, free flow, or fluttering.6. Slowly open the bypass valve. A steady flow of air should enter the facepiece.7. Depress the shutoff button. Air flow should stop.8. Push the override button. A small burst of air should enter the facepiece and the

regulator should activate.9. Close the cylinder valve and bleed all residual air.
