The concepts were designed to blend equal parts style, perform- ance and function, and the new designs are meant to demon- strate the lifestyle and personal- ization possibilities of the brand’s latest vehicles – all with sophisticated aesthetics, said Roger McCormack, director, Ac- cessories and Performance Parts Marketing. Both of the concept vehicles feature Genesis White exteriors accented with blue-tint- ed windows and 18-inch concept wheels painted slate blue metal- lic. “The Chevrolet Blue Line Se- ries concepts integrate acces- sories that offer greater person- alization choices for customers,” said McCormack. “Each vehicle wears production and concept accessories thematically linked under the Blue Line Series ban- ner. We look forward to gauging public reaction at the SEMA Show and other venues.” The production and concept accessories were developed in Chevrolet’s design studio along- side the vehicles, said GM spokesman Randal Fox. “Chevrolet accessories bring a level of value and peace of mind that can only come from parts that are designed, engineered, tested and backed by the same team that developed the vehi- cles,” said McCormack. “It’s a lev- el of integration that enhances the sporty appearance of the ve- hicles.” The Malibu Blue Line concept combines design accents with performance parts, for a more athletic stance and sporty look, McCormack said. That was the message given at the opening of Southfield-based Lear Automotive’s grand opening of its innovation center in down- town Detroit on Oct. 18. Matt Simoncini, Lear CEO and president, said that as someone who grew up and was educated in the city of Detroit, it was an honor to be able to open up a new facility in the city where Lear got its start. The innovation center, Si- moncini said, also allows Lear to leverage some resources right around the corner – Wayne State University and the Center for Creative Studies. The Lear Innovation Center, said Karl Henn, director of Prod- uct Innovation, has been set up in a six-story building that was originally a cigar factory, and is located right next to the Book Cadillac Hotel on State Street. The site will be used to bring to- gether designers and engineers to better make the car compo- nents of the future. “Let’s face it,” Henn said, “the automobile is transforming from a nuts and bolts horsepower item people use for transporta- tion to a lifestyle experience. Cars are now more than a combi- nation of parts. That’s where the Lear Innovation Center comes in. Cars may be global, but the heart of the auto industry is in Detroit. We get to be a part of the rebirth of the city and downtown Detroit while reinventing Lear and its products.” The Lear staff there, Henn said, will total about 100 when everyone is finally moved in. Some, like him, will come from Lear’s headquarters in Southfield while others will be hired or Lear Returning to Detroit, Opens Innovation Center Clay is still used in Ford’s design process, and the company has found ways to recycle it for further use. Waste not, want not. Ford is following that philosophy even when it comes to something many people associate with what children play with on a rainy day. Modeling clay can be crafted, re-crafted and recycled over many years, said Ford spokes- woman Deeptie Sethi. And Ford has come up with a process that does just that with the clay it us- es to model future vehicles. Even as Ford embraces digital design and new technology, nothing beats building a full-size clay model of a vehicle, said Lloyd VandenBrink, modeling manager at Ford’s Truck Studio in Dearborn. These clay models remain an important part of Ford’s creative design process, helping designers spot issues in both the interior and exterior of a vehicle. “We are constantly being influ- enced by new technologies, but when we want to view physical properties early in the process, we still turn to clay,” said Van- denBrink. “When a design is still fluid, clay allows immediate re- views and feedback so necessary for working in a collaborative at- mosphere.” And building these models re- quires a lot of clay, Sethi said. Ford uses up to 200,000 pounds of clay every year to construct full-size vehicle models. None of this material was reused in the past, but during the last five years the company has used a proprietary machine to recycle more than 20,000 pounds of clay and keep it out of landfills. That’s the equivalent of a dozen full-size clay model exteri- ors. For example, a full-size mod- el built to design the new Raptor was composed of 1,935 pounds of clay – and designers spent 20,000 hours modeling it over four years, VandenBrink said. Most of the clay that Ford recy- cles comes from the milling process, during which designers use a machine to help them shape the silhouette of a vehicle. Since even a grain of sand can af- fect the finish quality of a model, only clay chips that fall into bins surrounding the vehicle are recy- cled. Once gathered, these clay chips are placed in the recycling machine – designed to process only Ford’s unique clay material and nothing else. The machine compresses and churns the clay with multiple blades, sucking all the air out of the material. The clay is then passed through a nozzle that’s heated just enough to churn it out with the proper consistency so that it can be reused. DETROIT (AP) – Fiat Chrysleris recalling more than 224,000Jeep Wrangler SUVs worldwidebecause the air bags may not in-flate in a crash.The recall covers certain 2016

and 2017 Wranglers. The compa-ny says in government docu-ments that wiring to a sensorcan come loose, cutting off sig-nals to an air bag computer. Ifthat happens, the seat belt pre-tensioners won’t work and theair bags won’t deploy.The company says no one has

been hurt because the air bagsdidn’t inflate and no customershave complained. The problemwas discovered during companycrash tests. Fiat Chrysler foundthat during a crash, the leftheadlight would rotate, pullingthe wiring loose.Repairs to fix the problem

aren’t ready yet, but FiatChrysler says it’s imminent andowners will be notified when toset up a service appointment.Dealers will reroute the wiring atno cost to owners.Fiat Chrysler says none of the

2017 models have been sold yet.

offers more horsepower andtorque than ever – an SAE-certi-fied 445 horsepower and net 910lb.-ft. – to enable easier, moreconfident hauling and trailering,said GM spokesman Tom Read.Along with a 19 percent increasein max torque over the currentDuramax 6.6L, the redesignedturbo-diesel’s performance isquieter and smoother, for greaterrefinement. bolt, cross-bolted main caps helpensure the block’s strength andenable more accurate location ofthe rotating assembly. A die-castaluminum lower crankcase alsostrengthens the engine block andserves as the lower engine cover,while reducing its overall weight.The new engine block incorpo-

rates larger-diameter crankshaftconnecting rod journals than thecurrent engine, enabling theplacement of a stronger crank-shaft and increased bearing areato handle higher cylinder loads.An enhanced oiling circuit,

The Canadians are coming, theCanadians are coming – toAuburn Hills.The Canada-based automotive

supplier Martinrea just brokeground for its new technical cen-ter in Auburn Hills on Oct. 17.The new tech center, located

next to GKN’s regional headquar-ters on North Opdyke, should beopen for business by next July, saidPat D’Eramo, Martinrea presidentand CEO.“We decided to build a new

tech center for a couple of rea-sons,” D’Eramo said. “First wehave a couple of different facili-ties in the area and their leasesare coming up. This allows us tobring everything together underone roof while taking care of thelease issue. And second our R&Dhas started to grow. Even if wedecided to keep our other sites,we’d still need more space for re-search. So given this, we’ve takenthe extra step of building a newtech center.”D’Eramo said that much of the

R&D being done by Martinreaconcerns the development oflighter metals.“We’re all about the light-

weighting,” D’Eramo said. “We’reabout evenly split between alu-minum and steel. Today’s vehiclecan’t all be one – steel or alu-minum – and we are researchingways to combine these two dif-ferent metals when doing thingslike aluminum stamping, alu-minum extrusion and aluminumcasting. The need to do R&D onhow to combine these productsdrove this move as much as any-thing else.”D’Eramo said the square foot-

D’Eramo said they decided tocall the new facility a tech centerbecause he’s an old GM man him-self and his first job was at GM’sTech Center in Warren.“I grew up in Detroit and al-

ways thought ‘tech center’ was acool name,” D’Eramo said.“There are all sorts of names wecould have given the facility – re-search center, innovation incuba-tor – but I really like the idea ofhaving our own tech center.”Martinrea International Inc. is

DETROIT (AP) – While the U.S.inched its way out of the GreatRecession, consumers went carshopping in droves. As sales re-bounded, the price of cars andtrucks rose to record highs.Now, the price trend is set to

reverse itself, partly becausesome buyers are unwilling or un-able to pay the high prices andinstead are opting for used cars.Although overall industry

sales are tracking last year’srecord 17.5 million, many au-tomakers are selling more cars torental companies to maintain themomentum.Sales to consumers are declin-

ing, so companies are rampingup incentives. Discounts in Sep-tember hit a level not seen sinceautomakers were desperate forsales during the financial crisis inlate 2008.“Inherently, you’re seeing a

price war,’’ says John Mendel, ex-ecutive vice president of HondaNorth America. “You’re alreadyseeing the pricing pressure.’’Analysts say the deals will only

get better during the next twoyears as millions of leased carsflood the used-car market andpull new-car prices down.Auto prices have risen every

year since the Great Recession,hitting a record average of$31,825 in December of 2015, ac-cording to J.D. Power. The aver-age price in September was$30,862, an all-time high for themonth. Prices have remained ele-vated largely because buyers arestill paying top dollar for red-hotsegments such as crossoversand big SUVs, which cost morethan sedans.Now, many analysts say the

perfect climate is developing topull prices lower soon:• SLOWING SALES: It may be

high prices or it may be gooddeals on late-model used cars,but sales of new vehicles have

Herfather co-signed, and she got atwo-year lease on new JeepCompass small SUV for under$200 per month. is scaled, there are some aspectsthat may not come out right, andfull-size models built from clayhelp identify issues thatwouldn’t have been apparentotherwise – such as depth issueson belt line edges or a car hood’spower dome.Ultimately, clay is used to

complement the design process,VandenBrink said. Ford con-stantly creates models on a com-puter, milling that surface designonto a clay model, makingchanges by hand before scan-ning them back into a computer.“Computers tend to have a

more single user work flow,where clay models tend to bemuch more collaborative,” saidVandenBrink. “A group conversa-tion is a great tool for collabora-tion and consensus, and claymodels do that same thing withdesign. Everybody can see andexplore possibilities togetherwith a better chance of develop-ing a great-looking model.”Some interesting facts about

the clay Ford uses:• During the past five years,

Ford has recycled enough clay tofill more than 26,000 12-ouncecans of soda. The amount recy-cled equates roughly to theweight of three Asian elephants.• Sulfur used to be a promi-

nent ingredient in clay, but theelement would escape once claywas heated and eventually forceelectronics to malfunction. Itwas phased out in the 2000s as aresult.• The clay that Ford uses in

its modeling does not really con-tain clay at all. It’s primarily acombination of waxes and oilwith filler, and does not containwater like traditional ceramicclay does.• Clay used to feature whale

blubber until the hunting ofwhales was banned.

DETROIT (AP) – Ford MotorCo. is cutting production as U.S.demand for new vehicles slows,but so far, its rivals aren’t doingthe same.Ford said Oct. 18 it will tem-

porarily idle four of its NorthAmerican assembly plants thismonth to better align productionwith demand.After six straight years of

growth, U.S. sales of new vehi-cles are slowing.In the first nine months of this

year, U.S. sales totaled 13.1 mil-lion new vehicles, up less than 1percent from 2015.“This is a roller coaster that’s

gone to the top,’’ said MikeHarley, an analyst with KelleyBlue Book. “I wouldn’t be sur-prised if other automakers followsuit.’’But sales are still near last

year’s record-high levels, and sofar, Ford’s chief rivals are stickingto their production plans. Gener-al Motors Co. and Fiat ChryslerAutomobiles both said Oct. 18that all of their plants are operat-ing normally. Toyota Motor Corp.said last month that it plans toincrease production of Tacomapickup trucks at its plant in BajaCalifornia, Mexico.Toyota is adding 400 workers

and investing $150 million in theplant by 2018.Dearborn-based Ford warned

in July that U.S. sales to individ-

ual, non-fleet buyers would likelydecline in the second half of thisyear. Pent-up demand that accu-mulated during the recession hasbeen satisfied. At the same time,more used cars are hitting themarket, competing with new carsfor buyers’ attention.Harley said automakers have

faucet so you don’t flood theyard,’’ Harley said.Ford has scheduled one-week

closures for plants in KansasCity, Mo., and Hermosillo and Cu-atitlan, Mexico. Those plantsmake the F-150 pickup truck, theFusion sedan and the Fiesta sub-compact.It also scheduled two weeks of

down time for its Louisville, Ky.,plant, which makes the Ford Es-cape and Lincoln MKC small SU-Vs.Ford Escape sales were up 1

percent in the first nine monthsof this year, while F-Series pickupsales were up 6 percent. Butsales of both vehicles were downin September.Ford says the cuts won’t im-

pact its financial guidance. It stillexpects a pretax profit of $10.2billion this year.

Drinking water is too valuableto waste on manufacturingprocesses, which is why Ford isaiming to reduce its use of theworld’s most precious resource –water – by nearly three-fourthsas it takes its next step towardusing zero potable (drinking) wa-ter for vehicle manufacturing.The company declared that by

2020, Ford aspires to have re-duced its water usage per vehicleby 72 percent and will havesaved more than 10 billion gal-lons of water since the turn ofthe millennium, said Fordspokesman John Cangany. In lay-man’s terms, that roughly meansfor every one gallon of waterFord used in manufacturing in2000, it aims to use about oneliter by 2020.“With many of our plants locat-

ed in water-stressed regionsaround the globe, we’re focusedon responsible water steward-ship in our operations,” saysBruce Hettle, group vice presi-dent, Global Manufacturing & La-bor Affairs. “We aim to ensure astable water supply for our facili-ties, while working with localcommunities to help ensure theirneeds are met.”Of all the water on the planet,

less than 1 percent is availablefor human use – according to Wa-terSense, an EPA partnershipprogram. The agency says the re-maining 99 percent is salt waterin oceans, fresh water frozen inpolar ice caps, or water inacces-sible for practical use.Ford has saved 10 billion gal-

lons of water from 2000 to 2015, adecrease of 61 percent – enoughto fill over 15,000 competition-sized swimming pools, Canganysaid. By achieving that feat in2013, Ford beat its own water re-duction target by two years.“We recognize water is a criti-

cal resource, so we establishedan aggressive 2020 target, build-ing on our successful reductionefforts to date,” says AndrewHobbs, director, EnvironmentalQuality Office. “We are exploringinnovative ways to reduce ourfootprint, starting with our aspi-rational goal of zero potable wa-ter use in our manufacturingprocesses. From there, we have afinal goal of zero water withdraw-al for our manufacturing process-es.”Cangany said Ford has

achieved its reductions to dateby implementing new technolo-gies such as its 3-wet paint

process and minimum quantitylubrication – saving hundreds ofthousands of gallons of water peryear. It will continue to roll outreal-time water metering using in-novative technologies to aggres-sively manage water use.The company also conducts

ongoing water assessments todetermine where new water-sav-ing processes can be implement-ed, Cangany said.Ford set out to reduce water

use in 2000 with its Global WaterManagement Initiative. The com-pany’s strategy aligns with coreelements of the CEO Water Man-date, a private-public initiativelaunched by the UN SecretaryGeneral in 2007 and adopted byFord in 2014.

“Ford recognizes the humanright to water,” says Kim Pittel,v.p., Sustainability, Environment,& Safety Engineering. “Setting anaspirational goal of zero waterwithdrawal for its manufacturingprocesses and endorsing theCEOWater Mandate are all publicdemonstrations of this. We’venot only moved to reduce waterin our own facilities, but we arenow sharing our leading prac-tices for decreasing water usewith our suppliers, and multiply-ing our impact.”Ford is one of eight companies

to earn an “A” rating for its ac-tions to conserve water by CDP,the world’s only global environ-mental disclosure agency, Can-gany said.

ing the new wrap, brand spokes-people wrote, “The whimsicalwrap for the minivan, which isbuilt with families in mind, fea-tures a classic ‘storybook’-themed illustration.”The new 2017 Chrysler Pacifi-

ca Hybrid is the world’s first hy-brid minivan, which by itself is

‘It’s a Wrap’ at Chrysler HQFor the New 2017 Pacifica

As consumers look for newways to tap into the ever-growingdigital world, the number of peo-ple using multiple digital deviceson a regular basis has grown.In response, Ford has re-

designed the interior of its 2017Ford Fusion to offer drivers andpassengers more storage, in-creased connectivity, and anopen, airier feel throughout, saidFord spokesman Dan Jones.“People love the look and feel

of Fusion, but there are alwaysthings we can do to make it bet-ter,” says Kelly Whetstone, Fordvehicle architecture supervisorfor Fusion. “So we looked at cus-tomer feedback, and then wehoned in on the storage capabili-ty of the car.”Roughly one in three Ameri-

cans, Jones said, own a smart-phone, a computer and a tablet –a 140-percent increase over thelast three years, according toPew Research Center. AmongU.S. adults today, 68 percenthave a smartphone, up from 35percent in 2011, while tabletcomputer ownership has edgedup from 3 percent to 45 percent.Research also finds some 14 per-cent own a portable gaming de-vice, while around 19 percenthave e-book readers.To accommodate all of these

devices, Jones said Ford engi-neered 59 percent more storageinto the Fusion console, addingeasy-to-reach bins throughout,

including a new phone pocketand area for small coins. To pro-vide a 4-liter increase to the mainconsole storage area, the arm-rest has been lengthened about 3inches, and a clamshell designhas been incorporated for theupper compartment to make thespace more accessible and userfriendly.The revamped media bin at the

front of the console, under the 8-inch touch screen, sees the addi-tion of a lighted USB port for in-creased connectivity on the for-ward wall. A narrow new storageslot behind it is perfect for a cell-phone and other small items,Jones said.The rearrangement provides

room for more efficiently de-signed cord storage space, socords don’t tangle, droop orsnag. The new USB port allowsfor easier phone connection, socustomers can enjoy the func-tionality of SYNC 3 and AppLink.A rotary gear shift dial re-

places the traditional shifterfound in previous models. Thenew shifter serves both form andfunction, says Hani Badawi, FordFusion ergonomics engineer. Notonly is its less intrusive form aes-thetically pleasing, the designfrees up valuable real estate onthe console.“Without the larger base of the

traditional shifter, there wasmuch more room for us to addfeatures that are important to

the Fusion customer, like storageand connections,” says Badawi.“We were able to shuffle aroundthe driver-assist controls to thebase of the shifter, along with theelectronic brake, for a more intu-itive arrangement for the cus-tomer, as well as providing alonger armrest for significantlyimproved elbow comfort for driv-ers.”The change in size and place-

ment of the shifter also allowedthe cupholders to be reposi-tioned, Whetstone said. Previ-ously side by side in the middleof the console, they now sit foreand aft – closer to the passengerside. The front cupholder is only6 inches forward from its originalposition, say the engineers, butthe tweak makes quite a differ-ence ergonomically, as Fusioncupholders are now within easyreach for 95 percent of the popu-lation. The new location alsoeliminates an issue sometimesfound in previous models, said-Whetstone.“Before, people would be using

the shifter and they’d be bump-ing their elbows on cups becausethe cupholders were behind it,”she said. “That’s not going tohappen anymore. With the futur-istic shifter and new console con-figuration, the Fusion cabin nowappears open and airier, whilethe streamlined console seemsless crowded, with more lengthand space.”

ate it said it was fair and had re-ceived support from the vast ma-jority of eligible car owners. Volk-swagen’s lawyer said Oct. 20 thatit was a good deal for buyers andwould help the company regainpeople’s trust.But Blair Stewart, a Volkswa-

gen owner from Palo Alto, saidthe company engaged in a “pro-gram of deception’’ that shouldnot go unpunished. More than adozen people spoke against thesettlement at the hearing.The scandal erupted in Sep-

tember 2015 when the U.S. Envi-ronmental Protection Agencysaid Volkswagen had fitted manyof its cars with software to foolemissions tests, putting dirty ve-hicles on the road. Car ownersand the U.S. Department of Jus-tice sued.The software recognized when

the cars were being tested on atreadmill and turned on pollutioncontrols. The controls wereturned off when the cars re-turned to the road. The EPA al-leged the scheme let the carsspew more than 40 times the al-lowable limit of nitrogen oxide,which can cause respiratoryproblems in people.Robert Giuffra, an attorney for

Volkswagen, said the deal in-cludes compromises but pro-vides relief to consumers.“This settlement is something

that I think is very good for con-sumers,’’ he said. “It’s good forthe environment, and it’s a wayfor Volkswagen to regain thetrust of its customers, the Ameri-can people, regulators and doright by the environment.’’As of mid-October, more than

330,000 people had signed up forsettlement benefits, with about3,200 opting out, said ElizabethCabraser, lead attorney for theplaintiffs. She said the deal’s buy-back option would give con-sumers the “retail replacementvalue’’ of their vehicles.“This was a broken situation. It

DETROIT (AP) – The Universi-ty of Michigan is set to receive$27 million from a Chinese in-vestment firm to aid in the insti-tution’s driverless vehicle androbotics research.U-M President Mark Schlissel
