Warp X FilmsProduction
Production Origins
Warp Records was established in 1989 and has frequently been seen as a pioneering independent record label.
Originally exclusively involved with electronic music but more recently this has expanded to include different types of music
Production Origins
Warp Films was formed in 2000- their first film was a Chris Morris short film and won a BAFTA for best British short film. They have subsequently made more short films.
Company has grown with the success of the feature films Dead Man’s Shoes and This is England
Production Origins
Warp X was formed in response to the UK Film Council and Film Four who came with a commission of low-budget film-making in a reaction to bigger budget films that were not finding distribution.
They needed to come forward with a distributor attached (Optimum Releasing) as well as some external finance (Warp worked with Screen Yorkshire and EM Media)
Little connection in terms of staff between Warp Films and Warp X, but there is a synergy between the two companies
Production Dilemmas
All films must be made for under £1.2 million
Company committed to making 6 films over 3 years with funds divided between 3 films made for around £400,000 and 3 made for around £1 million.
An emphasis on films are made with digital cameras (cheaper to use, arguably provides more creative freedom but possibly worse quality)
Production Dilemmas
In order to ensure that the production company are able to make films so cheaply, they made a conscious decision to focus on Genre films rather than Drama.
