What is the Scientific Method?• It refers to the steps someone takes to…

1) Identify a question

2) Develop a hypothesis (educated guess)

3) Design an experiment

4) Record observations

5) Make a conclusion

In other words.. it’s a way to solve a problem!

Page 8: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

Scientists think carefully and

logically when they…

(1) investigate a question or

problem.Ex: What is in this box?

Page 9: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

Scientists develop a question, gather information and… (2) form a hypothesis-- an educated guess.

Ex: If the object inside the box is bouncy and rolls around, then it is a superball.

Page 10: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

Writing a Scientific Hypothesis:

If…, Then…Ex: If the check is for Auto Body Shop, then she went to go fix her car.

Page 11: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

The next step scientists take is to… (3) create and conduct an experiment to test their hypothesis.

Ex: Move the box side to side to see if the object is rolling or sliding.

Page 12: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

A key to experiments is… (4) observing what happens and writing it down.

Ex:

Box# Observations Object

Page 13: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

(4a) QuaLitative Observations are based on Looks!

Note: There are 2 types of observations!

Color, shape, size, texture can be used to make observations.

Ex: The ball is small and rubbery.

Page 14: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

(4b) QuaNtitative Observations are based on Numbers!

Make these observations by counting or measuring with a tool (ruler, scale, etc.).

Ex: The metal pipe weighs 5 grams.Ex: There are 12 checks.

Note: Gathering information or data and recording it so it is readable and makes sense to others is really important.

Don’t be a mad scientist!!

Page 17: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

Once a scientist completes an experiment, they will… (5) repeat the experiment to see if they get the same results.

This is called verification-- checking things out to make sure everything was correct

and the results will be the same over and over.

Page 18: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

Scientists also need to… (6) share their experiments and conclusions with others.

Because they share their experiments and findings, scientists can learn from each other and often use someone else’s experiences to help them with what they are studying or doing.

Page 19: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

The steps of the Scientific Method are:

• Question

• Background Research

• Hypothesis

• Procedure (Experiment)

• Data (Observations)

• Conclusion

Experimental And Control GroupsExperimental And Control Groups

In order to test something, we must have a comparison.

- Experimental group: one being tested

- Control group: comparison to the experimental group

Page 27: Warm Up – September 1, 2015 New Handout = Page 7 ObjectiveCopy the following: I can verbally describe the 6 major steps of the scientific method. Do NowAnswer.

In an experimental and control group, only the independent variable is changed.
