THE G7

Today we are going to discuss what makes a country powerful and influential. It is easy to start with influence. In 1975, France called a meeting of the six wealthiest developed nations in the world to discuss world affairs. This was known as the Group of 6 or G6. Over the past 40 years two nations have been added, but one has been suspended in 2014. The flags to the right include the current G7 nations. How many can you name?

Now label and color them on your maps on Page 34. Color them all green if possible, but keep the color consistent.

AND WHAT ABOUT THE +5?

Well the criteria for this is a little more vague. It started in 2005 when British Prime Minister invited the 5 biggest emerging economies to sit down at the then G8 Summit. The current 5 include: Brazil, Mexico, India, China, and South Africa. It should be noted that Australia and South Korea are considered advanced, and Indonesia and Turkey are also newly industrialized. All of these plus, Saudi Arabia and Argentina are included in the G20.
