Russia in debt from war Sec.of State William H. Seward agreed to
purchase Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. (that’s only about 2 cents an acre!)
At the time, critics thought Seward was crazy and called the deal "Seward's folly."

Why did the US get involved?
Expand power & gain natural resources! Major discoveries of gold made in AK in the
1880s and 1890s. Brought attention and people to Alaska. Today, petroleum transported across the
state through a pipeline is Alaska's richest mineral resource.

“The Purchase of Alaska”
Questions to think about while reading: What was going on in the US when Alaska was
purchased from Russia? Why was the sale considered a “folly”? When and why did attitudes towards Alaska
change? How were the native people of Alaska treated?

Where
Hawaii is in the Pacific Ocean, about 2,387 mi from CA

Who
Until the late 1890s, Hawaii is ruled by a monarch.
American Sugar and Pineapple Planters on the island become very wealthy and powerful.
![Page 24: Warm-Up 5/7](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062520/56816439550346895dd601f1/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Liliuokalani•Last queen of Hawaii•1891-1893
![Page 25: Warm-Up 5/7](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062520/56816439550346895dd601f1/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
What happened and How did it happen? Queen Liliuokalani is removed from power by
American military force Pressure had been put on the gov’t from
strong businessmen w/ interests in Hawai (including Sanford Dole – the pineapple guy!)
![Page 26: Warm-Up 5/7](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062520/56816439550346895dd601f1/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
When
Hawaii becomes annexed to the US in1898 Why did the US get involved: America gains
greater access to goods!

“The Annexation of Hawaii”
Questions to think about: How were American missionaries treated
when they first arrived in Hawaii? Why did planters want Hawaii to be part of
the US? What was President Cleveland’s stance on
the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani and the annexation of Hawaii?
![Page 31: Warm-Up 5/7](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062520/56816439550346895dd601f1/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
