A colostomy is an opening that is

made in the colon with surgery.

After the opening is made, the

colon is brought to the surface of

the abdomen to allow stools to

    leave your body.

The opening at the surface of the

abdomen is called a stoma. Temporary colostomy-

    performed for traumatic injuries

    or inflammatory conditions of the

bowel. It allows the diseasedportion of the bowel to rest and

    heal

    Permanent colostomy-

    performed to provide a

means of eliminationwhen the rectum or anus

    is nonfunctional as a

result of a birth defect or

    a disease such as

    cancer.

    Reasons for Performing

a Colostomy When feces cannot progress

naturally from the colon to the anus

When it is more desirable or

manageable to divert the feces, as

    for paraplegics

In any condition where the rectum

or anus is nonfunctional because of

disease, a birth defect or a

    traumatic condition (e.g. cancer,diverticular disease, Crohn's

    disease)

    It is performed to

    divert the fecal flow

    away from an area

    of inflammation or

    around an operative

    area

    Complications

    a. Stoma retraction- Retraction

happens when the height of the

stoma goes down to the skin

level or below the skin level.

    b. Peristomal hernia- Peristomal

hernias occur when part of the
