Warburg School Principal s Message April 2018 Dear Warburg Families, Who knew that we would have to choose between winter boots and rubber boots on April 16th. The weather is certainly not cooperating. I hope calving is going well for those of you that are in the thick of things on the ranch. Eventually, the fields will dry up and those of you that farm will be out there getting the canola in the ground. The rest of us just have to contend with kids anxious to get on their bikes and go for a ride around town. The RCMP and ByLaw Enforcement will be putting on a Bike Rodeo for our elementary students on May 29th. This will involve bike helmet fittings, a simple overview of each bike that comes in to make sure it is safe to ride, and an obstacle course designed to see how adept the kids are at riding their bikes. Stay tuned for more information sent home soon. Our School Resource Officer, Constable Young, along with two other members of the Thorsby Constabulary, observed and participated in a lockdown drill the other day. They, along with Mrs. Fritz and I were very pleased with the swift response to the lockdown call. All students remained silent until they were permitted out of lockdown behaviour. A great job being prepared! Keep checking our calendars for information nights for students and parents moving into grade 10 and into grade 7. We look forward to sharing info with you that will make the transition to a new grade a smooth one. Its the same school but a whole new set of responsibilities for the kids. We want to assist in any way we can to set the kids up for success. Please do not hesitate to contact your childs teacher(s) or me if you have any questions about their educa- tion at Warburg School. Mrs. Wendy Maltais

Celebra t ion o f the Ar t s Black Gold Regional Schools presented a spectacular event on Friday, April 13th, with the stars of the show being students from the seven high schools in our District. The Celebration of the Arts was held at the Winspear Centre in Edmonton, which is a world class venue, giving the stu-dents the opportunity to perform their talent and show their artwork to a nearly full house au-dience of the B.G.R.S. School Board, District staff, parents, extended family and their student peers.

Warburg School Art student, Hayley Gruninger had the honour of having her artwork chosen for the promotional posters and event program, and our Art 20 students group artwork was on the back. A collection of artwork from our Junior and Senior high Art students was on display in the lobby. On the stage W.S. grade 11 students, Amy Drysdale and Anthony Allen, performed a comical Duologue piece from Monty Python called The Parrot Sketch (written by John Cleese and Graham Chapman). Also performing on the BIG stage was grade 11 student, Glenda Mueller. Glen-da played Pietro’s Return (composed by Pietro Deiro) on the accordion that she received from her uncle in Switzerland.

Glenda and Mrs. Phillips performed in the Finale mass choir performance which was quite incred-ible with the all of the concert bands, performers, the Piatta Forma Choir, and other guests coming together to create a magnificent song from the movie the Prince of Egypt, When You Believe (arranged by John Moss and Audrey Snider)

Our Warburg School performers did an excellent job of representing our school and we thank them for their dedication to their practice.

If you missed the 2018 Celebration of the Arts, but appreciate the necessity of the Art, Drama and Music programs in our schools, you can make a donation toward our programs to help ensure the continuation of educating and supporting the growth of our young artists.

Our Grade 4 class participates in the

Plastic Bag Grab Challenge!

They have collected almost 1400 plastic bags toward the Challenge held during Earth Week 2018 (April 16-20).

The Grade 4 class registered into the program with help from Mrs. Babcook & Mrs. Parkyn, and began collecting bags from our communi-ty. Learning about plastic waste and the im-portance of the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and sharing how our school community is tak-ing action to reduce plastic bag use were two of the factors in this challenge. Collecting the bags, and creating their display to create com-munity awareness was another. The next step was to submit their photo, along with their final result findings.

The class is eagerly awaiting a response from the Program to see if their efforts earned them one of the Prizes (1/province/territory):

Grand Prize: $1,000

Collection and Recycling Participation Prize: $500 or a Trex bench made entirely from recy-cled plastic bags

Social Media Prize: $500

Watch for our Social Media posts!

The Dungeons & Dragons club have had a great March. Successfully avoiding the Draconian

Army moving relentlessly across the plains of Abanasinia, they've fought their way to the

gates of the once great city of Xak Tsaroth.

Many questions remain unanswered though. What lies inside the ruins, where have these

strange dragon men come from, and what is the purpose of the mysterious Blue Crystal Staff?

If you are interested in joining the D&D club, please contact Mr. Hodges or drop by his class-

room after school on Fridays! You may be the missing link to unlock the answers to the mys-

terious questions.
