Wang Family Trip to America

The following account is from an interview with Hannah (Wang)Olson about the Wang family history.Hannah was a young girl of seven years old when they sailed to America.

They were born in Østre Toten, Norway. Several of the kids had been sent on ahead. Marie (Sherve) wasthe first to come to America when she was 18. She came to Stoughton, Wisconsin to an uncle by the nameof Tangen. After working she sent for Karen. Marie and Karen both worked and then sent for Katherine. Thenwhen Ole was 18, he and Julia, who was 13, left for America, traveling alone on the ship for New York. Theyalso came to Wisconsin. Dr. Shee got her to come to Westby, but she doesn’t remember where Julia and Olewent when they first arrived. Julia went to Minneapolis to join Karen, where they worked as maids for somerich families. They were treated like personal slaves by these rich people. They later sent for Evan to come.On 30 April 1903, Christian, his wife Lene, and the four younger children, Lena, Marne, Louise and Hannah

left Norway. They landed in America on May 19, 1903. She remembers they went by boat down a musen (abody of water, Lake Mjøsa) to Oslo, where they boarded a big ship. She remembers her mother not wantingto leave, and was sitting in their house on her rocking chair, crying and crying. All they could take with waswhat they could get in steamer trunks. Each family took their own food also. She said both her parents werevery homesick.

She remembers everyone was sea sick and could’nt eat. They just laid in their bunks. There was a terriblestorm and tables were wrecked. She said the boat was packed and once people got over their seasickness, people would play fiddles and others would dance. She remembers her mother telling her to stay away from the Finns and Swedes, because they had lice! The ship was named the Island, and this was the last voyage it would make because it was wrecked. After

three weeks they landed in New York and walked to an immigration place (Ellis Island). She remembersdoors were locked. A man also gave her a candy bar, which left a big impression. They then traveled by trainfrom New York to Westby.

She also remembers that their first teacher at the Clockmaker school was Aunt Alma, Ole Hanson’s daugh-ter and sister to Oscar Hanson.
