Producers of Pirates in Paradise have found themselves $2000 short of bounty, so are particu-larly keen locals support their production this week.

“If we get an audience of at least 150 each night we’ll be able to pay our bills,” said director Gilly Pugh. “If we get full houses that would be even better.” Costs involved in put-ting on the production include the manufacture of props and costumes, lighting and venue hire. “QLDC is giving us a good proportion of the cost of hiring the Lake Wanaka Centre which is great,” Gilly said.

Pirates in Paradise is a comedy written by Gilly with John Schwarz. It stars 16 local adults (including Kahu Youth’s Richard Elvey and Bis Bisson from Wanaka Wastebusters) as well as 50 students from the

Aspiring Children’s Theatre School.

The show is guaranteed to be amusing and most people in town will know at least one person in the show. If you fancy a laugh at some well-known locals including a doctor, teacher, truck driver, office manager and LandSAR hero, this is your chance.

Gilly said she had applied to the Upper Clutha Com-munity Arts Council (UCCAC) for $2000 to help put on the show, and had expected to get the money. Unfortunately the council’s application for charitable status hasn’t come through yet, so it doesn’t have any money for grants. Council member Dennis Schwarz passed the bad news on to Gilly on Monday.

Council treasurer Susan Manson said the arts council had started the process of applying for charitable status

three months ago and expects it to come through in a couple of weeks. “Once that comes through we will have $20,000 to give away each year,” she said.

Gilly said she has no gripe with the arts council.

“It’s the government chang-ing the laws so everyone who wants funding has to have charitable status,” she said. “Yet more bureaucracy. We’re just a little community theatre group.”

UCCAC is funded through the Central Lakes Trust. CLT chief executive Paul Allison said all organisations they give money to now need to have charitable status.

Pirates in Paradise is on from Thursday to Saturday (October 29 - 31) in the Lake Wanaka Centre.

All performances are at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Black Peak Gelato, or on the door if not sold out.

Locals are being asked for com-ments on how information on winter road conditions is gathered and disseminated by the Queen-stown Lakes District Council. Everyone on its winter road report list has been sent an invitation to take part in a survey on how they use the reports and how they could be improved.

The survey is being carried out by Abley Transportation Consult-

ants on behalf of the NZTA and QLDC.

A trial website was launched earlier this year where residents could send in information on the conditions of roads around the district. This included hazards and changing conditions such as black ice, heavy snow and accidents. People submitted reports online from computers or smartphones.

This winter reports were sent and received on the council’s facebook page, twitter feed and website as well as by email.

Some of the damage caused by vandals at the popular Meadow Hut.

it is not locked so that if someone needs to escape bad weather or came there with exhaustion, they would be able to get inside. “We figure if someone is going there to damage it they would just shoot the door off or break it in anyway,” said Mary.

Mary said the vandals’ use of guns was particularly upsetting. The Pisa Alpine Charitable Trust land is for recreation only. Hunt-ing is not permitted on the land, however shooting, as part of the sport of biathlon, is allowed under strictly controlled circumstances.

“Until now I would have happily sent my grandkids out on their mountain bikes around that area, believing it was perfectly safe,” said Mary. “But now I would have to think twice. It’s just silly, wasteful damage.”

The Luggate Red Bridge centennial was celebrated on Saturday with a ribbon cutting, speeches, vintage cars and red rosettes to match the colour of the 100-year-old structure.

The ceremony was attended by politicians, historians, family members of the people who designed and built the bridge, and locals.

Centennial co-ordinator Graham Taylor said the event had been over two years in

the making. “The Red Bridge Centennial is in recognition of our pioneer engineers and builders who built what has become not only a vital transport link but an important and well-recognised national landmark.”

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean paid tribute to the bridge on the day and noted how, 100 years on from opening, it was still providing a vital service to people in the community.

A procession of vintage cars crossed the bridge during the ceremony, and the celebra-tions continued at the Luggate Hotel.

An Australian couple have ditched their home in Sydney to “live like a local” in Wanaka and give tourism here a boost.

Amberley Kramhoft and Florent Piovesan are the first ‘digital influencers’ to be chosen as part of Lake Wanaka Tourism’s (LWT) Wanaka Influencer Programme.

LWT launched an innovative initiative in August, inviting digital influencers - people with a big follow-ing on social media - to live like a Wanaka local for up to three months.

LWT covers the cost of their accommodation and activities and in return these influencers will share images and stories of their time in the region with their fans and followers.

The LWT team was inundated with quality propos-als from around the world. Applicants were from Lake Wanaka’s key markets, including Australia, UK, the US, Germany and France.

Amberley, from Australia, and Florent, from

France, are the creative force behind travel website Of Two Lands. The couple enjoy documenting inter-esting people and places through film, photography and illustrations.

On their website the couple say they are “feeling really exciting and privileged to have been given this amazing opportunity”. The couple have already enjoyed a helicopter flight to Mount Roy and completed the Rob Roy Glacier track.

LWT General Manager James Helmore said a number of other influencers would be arriving over the next year.

“With Instagram being our number one social media platform, we have been working very closely with social influencers, who inspire their audiences with incredible imagery and first person stories of Wanaka,” said James.

“Social media channels are a trusted, and for many consumers, the first source of travel information and this programme will be a very cost effective way for us to build awareness, effectively reaching a global market that are looking for inspiration and are ready to make travel decisions.”

Travel photographer and social influencer Johan Lolos spent six months in Wanaka over winter, sharing his experiences with the world on Instagram.

Rugby fans are gearing up for a thrilling showdown between the All Blacks and the Wal-labies this weekend in the final of this year’s Rugby World Cup.

A number of bars and cafes in Wanaka have got into the sporting spirit, opening in the early hours of the morning to show the matches which are taking place in the UK.

And as rugby excitement reaches fever pitch on this side of the globe, with New Zealand and Australia clashing in the final, local venues are expecting a big turnout.

The final kicks off at 5am on Sunday. The bronze final, between South Africa and Argentina, takes place on Saturday morning.

“We’re expecting a massive crowd,” said James White,

General Manager at Waterbar. “We had a huge turnout at the semi-final so we’re expecting it to be even bigger for the final. We’re opening at 4am and serving breakfast, coffees and some people like to have

a drink while they’re watching the match.”

A number of other bars and cafes will also be opening on Sunday including Trout Bar, Lake Bar, Beanie Café and Bullock Bar.

Entries open for Kahu Youth Awards GLENDA TURNBULLWanaka Sun

Kahu Youth are looking to the young people in the community to nomi-nate their peers for the second Kahu Youth Volunteer Awards. Entries are now open for this year’s awards, and organisers are hoping to see an increase in nominations this year.

The awards are open to all resi-dents of the Upper Clutha region aged 18 and under. The awards are broken out into categories (12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under, 18 and under) and have their names removed before they are given to the youth council. The supreme winner can come from any age category.

Youth worker Richard Elvey said the awards came about after a conversation with Gillian White (Volunteering Central) and

Liz Brezlin (Mt Aspiring College Students in the Community).

“During this conversation I heard about so many other young people in the district outside of Kahu Youth and our scope doing great things quietly in the background.”“Based on what we hear from the community, young people didn’t always have the best reputation and it seemed that the actions of the few were tarnishing the image of the many.”“The awards were created to both celebrate the great work all of these young people do and to raise the awareness of them in the wider community, improving the image of local young people in the process.”Nomination forms are available from www.kahuyouth.org, Mt Aspiring College or at Kahu Youth office in Russell Street. Nominations close November 25.

In previous years Wanaka has failed to fall under the spell of Halloween, but this weekend some groups of adults and children will be getting into the spirit of things.

Staff and children at the Wanaka After School Programme (WASP) have been busy turning their classroom into a haunted house this week for a Halloween party tomorrow night (Friday October 30). Kids are encouraged to dress up and bring a pumpkin along for carving. The fun and games will be kicking off at 5.30pm until 7.30pm

and entry is free.Spooky skaters should head

down to the skatepark on Saturday for the ‘Dead Man Jam’ at 7pm. Fun for all ages of the dead, dress up is essential and it’s B.Y.O. blood.

Any swashbuckling scoundrels are in for a treat over the Hal-loween weekend with Pirates in Paradise - a comedy play for all the family. Written and directed by John Schwarz and Gilly Pugh, the play will see 60 adults and children take to the stage in a rollicking, home-grown pirate adventure on October 29, 30 and 31. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children, available from Black Peak Gelato.

Cycling to Hawea Flat will soon be a whole lot easier, thanks to lengthy negotiations by a large number of interested parties. A new cycling and walking track from the end of Newcas-tle Road across Devon Dairy Farms land to the Hawea River Track has been approved by the Wanaka Community Board after several years of negotia-tions between the Queenstown Lakes District Council, the Upper Clutha Tracks Trust, the Clutha Fisheries Trust and the Cooper family who own Devon Dairy Farms.

Wanaka Community Board chair Rachel Brown described

the agreement as a dream come true. “This stretch has been identified as a vital link in the tracks network for some years,” she said. “Ironically Newcastle Road used to extend all the way along there to the punt on the Clutha River at Albert Town. Soon cyclists and walkers will be able to use the same route again. Everyone’s very happy.”

Rachel said it was important people were patient and did not attempt to use the route until the track was completed. “I can’t give you dates yet, but it will happen,” she said.

“The whole process has been a very good one. The most moving thing for me was when [QLDC Principal Infrastruc-ture] Denis Mander was given

a round of applause at the community board meeting. That doesn’t happen often.”

The new link track is part of a wider agreement which also includes a new vehicular track from Kane Road to the Clutha River which was wanted for fishing access in particular.

The new tracks have been agreed to by the Cooper family in exchange for the closing of some unformed legal roads which ran across their property and could potentially interfere with the dairy farming operation. The Coopers have also agreed to the provision of an unformed legal road around the periph-ery of the farm and easements for a potential council utilities corridor.

Wanaka local Raewyn Phipps travelled to Kenya’s Masai Mara National Park in August to compete in the Masai Mara half marathon. Her motivation to run and finish the 21km race was a fundraising effort to support the various So They Can projects, including chil-dren’s education, a business college and a medical clinic. The group of 12 runners raised $50,000 between them from sponsorship.

Raewyn said the normal procedure in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Park is to stay inside the vehicle whilst amongst the animals. Once a year this norm is broken and hundreds of runners make the open sun-beaten savannah their racetrack. The previous day, from only five metres away and in the general location of the run, Raewyn had watched a chee-tah resting under the shade of

a tree, eyeing up the herd of gazelles grazing nearby.

It turned out that the presence of animals was the least of Raewyn’s challenges. A start time of 10am meant a

rather warm temperature of 28 degrees had been reached, the early morning cloud cover had dissipated and there was no shade.

With the Kenyan front

runners quickly disappearing from the rest of the group - all mizungu (white people) fell into line behind.

“The lead group of mo-torbikes and runners were enough to move the animals out of the way, the only animal I sighted was a lone hyena watching from a respectable distance. I was still moving so I don’t think it was that interested in me,” Raewyn said.

“The race was harder than I had anticipated. Having confidently trained for 21kms it felt more like 42kms, it was hot and dry and we underesti-mated the altitude and jet lag effects.”

With this adventure of 2015 out of the way, Raewyn is now looking to organise the So They Can Adventure of 2016. Anyone interested in a Mt Kilimanjaro climb or a 7 day cycle thru Kenya (both in September) or the Masai Mara half-marathon run (August 20) can contact Raewyn on [email protected]

The Longview Environmental Trust has received a funding boost to coordinate pest management activities in the Matukituki Valley catchment through the Depart-ment of Conservation (DOC) Community Conservation Partner-ships Fund.

“The trust is thrilled to receive funding for the Matukituki Catchment Animal Pest Control Project, and we feel very privileged to be able to contribute back to this unique environment that is an important area for all New Zealanders, tourism, agriculture and New Zealand native plant and animal species,” said trustee John May. “Having worked with DOC on previous projects, we were alerted to this fund and saw it as an opportunity to fast track [our] collaborative approach by putting together a comprehensive plan that had the support of all current stakeholders – DOC, farmers, all landowners in the area, commu-nity groups carrying out work, and the community.”

Since its inception in 2010 Longview Environmental Trust has supported animal and plant pest control work in the Emerald Bluffs and West Wanaka area and contributed to the wider area, through provision of eco-sourced plants for revegetation projects, support of pest control activities, education programmes for schools, and research projects into sustain-able development.

The trust will receive $50,000 over three years to purchase more than 400 traps. Longview Environ-mental Trust will fund a project coordinator.

“This project also relies on the dedicated volunteers of the Diamond Lake Conservation Trust, who already provide traps and volunteer hours in the Diamond Lake area.

“Their goals have always been to widen their area of operation, which aligns well with the scope of the Matukituki Catchment Animal Pest Control Project,” John said.

By the end of the funding period the trust hopes the project will have enough momentum and support to continue indefinitely.

Sister Catherine Ann Fox was remembered at a candlelight vigil at Hawea last Friday at the Hawea Dis-trict Monument on the Anzac Pen-insula at Lake Hawea, marking 100 years since her death. Sister Fox was one of several nurses who drowned when the troopship ‘Marquette’ was sunk by a German torpedo in the Aegean Sea on October 23, 1915. In all, 31 New Zealanders lost their lives when the ship sank.

The daughter of Mr and Mrs John Fox, Sister Fox was born in Central Otago and grew up on the family farm at Hawea. She trained as a nurse at Dunedin Hospital for four years. Afterwards she continued her nursing at Waimate. At the time of her enlistment she was working in Auckland as a private nurse. She served in Egypt prior to sailing on the Marquette.

The vigil was attended by about 30 people and included a call to com-memoration by Sergeant LJ Capell (NZIC).

A tribute to Sister Fox was given by local practice nurse Leigh Cashen (pictured). Leigh said she didn’t really like public speaking.

“But I felt, out of respect to Cath-erine Fox and the other nurses who died, I should take the opportunity to pay her a tribute,” said Leigh.

“The story of the nurses on the Marquette is one of senseless trag-edy. They set off from New Zealand with such selflessness in a world without modern antibiotics and pain relief to nurse the wounded, only to be killed by a torpedo on a ship they should never have been on.”

To close the ceremony the ‘Ode of Remembrance’ was read by Isla Henderson of the Hawea Flat School.

Sister Fox is remembered on both the Wanaka and Hawea War Memorials.

Local bookseller Chris Lumsden (Paper Plus) has a reputation for going the extra mile on special occasions, and the inaugural NZ Bookshop Day (Saturday October 31) will be no exception.

Some booksellers have visiting authors giving away books, others have readers trading cards. Not to be outdone, Chris will have a horse in his shop. Just a small one – a Shetland pony - surrounded by a display of horsey books.

For some reason Chris has chosen to have the horse inside the

shop and his other star attraction – TV star Game Chef Angelo Geor-galli – outside the shop. Angelo will be cooking up some hunters’ delights on a barbie.

So anyone who loves books, bookshops, horses, Italian chefs, barbeques or even Chris himself, should get down to Paper Plus on Saturday to join the Bookshop Day celebrations.

NZ Bookshop Day is the brain-child of NZ Booksellers and the in-augural slogan is “Your place, your bookshop”. It coincides with NZ Book Week (October 26-November 1) which is organised by the New Zealand Society of Authors.

A New Zealand Walking Access Commission survey has found six out of 10 New Zealanders (64 per cent) are nervous about asking landholders for access to their land. As this is the time of year many Kiwis start thinking about getting out into the great outdoors, the commission has published some advice from two keen walkers who say there is no need to be nervous.

Federated Mountain Clubs vice president David Barnes said a respect-ful approach goes a long way.

“I usually get into the outdoors on public conservation land, but I also ask for permission to cross private land,” he said. “I’ve only ever once been turned down and that was because the [farmer] was moving stock. Access is usually freely given, although it is sometimes difficult to track down the owner of a property to ask them.”

He believes landholders these days are just as likely to grant access as their forebears, saying decisions are generally dictated by the personalities of the individuals involved, rather than the generation they come from.

“There are always times when places change hands, or the person who used to own it dies, and the new owners won’t allow access. But it also goes the other way – new owners grant access when the old ones weren’t comfortable with it.”

David said he has found farming families in the Matukituki and Rees valleys particularly accepting of people crossing their land to access the sur-

rounding area. Many of these families have farmed the land for generations and are as passionate about the sur-rounding area as the recreationalists who come long distances to see it, he said.

Fisherman, hunter and tramper Sam Fielden said he almost always gets a positive response from landowners.

“It can be a little awkward rocking up to someone’s private residence, but people in the country are usu-ally pretty polite and appreciate an approach rather than having someone just wandering over their land.

“I recall an experience I had fishing in a remote part of the South Island. I approached a farmhouse to ask permission to cross the land and the farmer invited me in for a few beers

and a chat as the sun went down. It occurred to me, this guy was more than happy to see people.”

There is plenty more advice and information on the Walking Access Area Hikoi Aotearoa website. With regard to accessing private property it recommends you should; always ask permission first, leave gates as you find them, be careful not to disturb farm animals or walk through crops, and don’t leave any rubbish behind. A thank you afterwards is always appreciated.

The website advises that not all rivers, mountains, lakes, forests and beaches have public access as of right, and recommends people check where they are allowed to go, before going there.

The road to gaining walking access

Remember your fishing licenceFish & Game has issued a reminder that all anglers must have a valid fishing licence. Ten people have already been found fishing without a licence in Central Otago.“The Otago region generally has very high compliance with the sports fishing regulations, so to have a high number of offences de-tected early on is a little disappointing,” Fish & Game Officer Paul van Klink said. The Otago Fish & Game region has 30 rang-ers, many of them honorary, who will be out on the rivers and lakes this summer. Anglers can purchase a fishing license online at the Fish & Game website (http://www.fishandgame.org.nz/) or at sports shops.

Meeting on health risks of wi-fiA group of Wanaka parents is driving to Queenstown next week to hear environmen-tal lawyer Sue Grey talk about health risks associated with wireless devices and how to minimize them. Sue has been campaigning for safer use of wi-fi since 2008 and is regarded as one of New Zealand’s key speakers in the field of electromagnetic radiation. Her visit has been organized by a group of Queenstown parents who are concerned about long term effects of wi-fi technology, particularly on children. “It would be great to see board of trustee members and teachers at the talk as children are much more susceptible to radiation from wireless technologies because their cells and tissues are developing and they have thinner skulls,” organizer Lucy Emerson said. The talk will be in the Memorial Hall in Queenstown on Tuesday November 3 (7pm - 9.30pm).

KIM REILLYFederated Farmers

Weather forecasters are now consistently predicting that the strong El Nino conditions we’re experiencing at the moment will continue until at least next autumn.

This is not good news for landowners and depending on what part of the country you’re in, not necessarily great for holiday-makers either.

Federated Farmers urges landowners in the Upper Clutha, whether you farm sheep, beef, dairy, horses or just a few alpacas around a lifestyle block, to start preparing for the weather and conditions ahead.

There are measures that land-owners can take now that will assist through this period.

A range of quality industry advice and information is available on this topic, and the Ministry for Primary Industries has hand-ily collated all of this onto their website www.mpi.govt.nz, under the heading ‘Ready for El Nino?’

It’s definitely worth taking the time to go through this informa-tion and advice.

El Nino conditions can be really rough, and they’re not just tough on land, people, livestock and the economy, they also make wildfire difficult to contain and highly unpredictable.

Otago is already in a Restricted Fire Season which means fires are by permit only. Yet the Otago Rural Fire Service has already been dealing with a number of fires this spring.

High winds, dry vegetation, low

relative humidity and drought conditions are one of nature’s cruellest recipes, and we’ve already seen this in play across parts of Otago recently.

It is almost a certainty that extreme fire danger will con-tinue throughout many parts of Otago across the summer and into autumn.

The Rural Fire Service has some good advice on actions we all can take now that should help reduce the risks associated with wildfire.

Firstly, anyone operating farm machinery or equipment should be taking steps to reduce the risk of sparks escaping. This may be through checks and maintenance or by simply rescheduling the tim-ing of operations, such as carrying out activities in the cooler hours of the day.

In both the Dunsandel and Saddle Hill fires earlier this month, a number of evacuations were required. There are things you can do now to protect yourselves and your homes in similar circum-stances.

Firstly, discuss an escape plan with friends and family, right down to the route you will take and where you will meet in the event of a fire.

You should also fully assess your section or block of land. If you have trees, vegetation or other combustible material near your house, there are three options to consider: move it, clear it or cut it back. The Rural Fire Service needs space to defend your homes in case a fire does occur.

Preparing for El Nino now won’t stop it coming, but it can certainly help reduce its impacts.

Dethatch your lawn. Now available for hire to remove all the dead matter in the base of your lawn.

If you live or work around Anderson Road you have got a wonderful walk right on your doorstep. And there’s a special guided walk up there on Wednesday (November 4) to celebrate Conservation Week (November 1-8).

Local Forest and Bird branch member Anne Steven is guiding the walk. She will be pointing out more than 20 native plant species, including some rare ones – such as Leptinella serrulata – a dryland button daisy which is on the decline due to habitat loss. Anne is a well-known landscape architect with a passion for native plants. Any adults or children interested in going on the walk should meet by the shepherd and dog statue above the main road carpark at 5.15pm (Wednesday November 4).

The theme for this year’s Conservation Week is ‘Healthy Nature Healthy People’. The Department of Conservation is encouraging people to take part in events all over the country from guided walks to competitions.

Conservation Week was started by the New Zealand Scout Association in 1969 and taken on by the Department of Conservation when it was formed in 1987.

Another special Conservation Week event taking place in the district is a talk on pest trapping at the Kiwi Birdlife Park in Brecon Street, Queenstown (Tuesday November 3, 5.30pm). People attending will learn about the threat of rats, stoats and possums to native birdlife and what they can do to help.

The kids had great fun watching all the ducks race down the river on Saturday. Good on the Rotary for organising it!

Glad to see some people are getting into the spirit of Halloween – WASP Halloween party, Mount Iron Trick or Treat Group and Lonestar all joining in the celebration.

The people who vandalised the Meadow hut are an absolute disgrace and just ruining it for everyone else!! I hope they find out who did it.

Can’t wait for the big show-down with Australia this week-end. Go the All Blacks!!

Are you ready for El Niño?Wanaka has been having some mixed up weather over the last few weeks, with ferocious winds, sweet sunshine and even some spring snow. But the phrase on every weather watcher’s lips these days is still El Niño.

El Niño is a climate cycle in the Pacific Ocean which has a global impact on weather patterns. New Zealand is currently in the grip of one of these El Niño weather patterns. It occurs every three to seven years on average, and this one is expected to rank among the four strongest to hit New Zealand - nearly as strong as the “super El Niño” which ravaged the West Coast in 1997-98.

Weather forecasters are now consistently predicting that these El Niño conditions will continue until at least next autumn.

And the main message for landowners is – be prepared.

Whether you farm sheep, beef, dairy, horses or just a few alpacas around a lifestyle block, Federated Farmers ( See page 11) is urging people to start preparing for the weather and conditions ahead. They recommend keeping a tight control on spending and bulking up on feed supply in advance.

Another danger to watch out for in an El Niño is wildfire, which can be unpredictable and difficult to control.

The Rural Fire Service offers some advice to land and homeowners to combat this, including checking machinery and equipment for escaping sparks, forming an evacuation plan and assessing your land for fire hazards.

You can’t stop El Niño, but some advance plan-ning could help your family and farm get through it in one piece.

I had only ever seen a single grebe in my life before I came to live in Wanaka, so I was excited to hear of a pair that perambulated around Roy’s Bay. From what I can gather they had attempted to breed a number of times, but seemingly failed despite all efforts.  Failing was sufficient reason to have me inquire into their natural history in detail, both here and elsewhere. Grebes have a pretty impeccable pedigree, going back at least 40 million years and are closely related to albatross and penguins (though not agreed by all; some think that flamingos fit in somewhere along that line).

The stunning courtship behaviour of these birds was deserving of its formal description by Sir Julian Huxley in 1916 and its breeding biology has perplexed those that dare to examine it in detail. More on that stuff next week.

In the meantime platform 14 has been launched and hopefully we re-launch number 10 later this week after it dragged its anchor some 500m. Keep an eye on nests 1 and 12, both should hatch over the next few days.

Retired zoologist John Darby keeps us up to date on the latest grebe hatchings at Lake Wanaka.

A 2-1 defeat of Paraguay paved the way for New Zealand’s U17 football team to go through to the knockout stage as the second-place team in Group F at the FIFA U-17 World Cup being held in Chile.

Lucas Imrie scored in the 91st minute to hand the Young All Whites the win in their last group match. Wanaka local Olly Ceci (pictured) is a member of the U17 team.

In New Zealand, Olly plays

for Auckland’s North Shore Utd. The midfielder was recently awarded the Young Player of the Year trophy at the team’s senior prize-giving.

Led by coach Danny Hay – him-self a former All Whites captain with 31 international caps – the team will now face Group B win-ners Brazil at the Estadio Sausalito in Vina del Mar on Thursday 29 October at 9am (NZ time). This is the third time the U17 team have reached the knockout stage.

Fair weather boosted numbers for the Cromwell half marathon on the weekend as 264 runners competed in the half marathon, 10km run and 10km walk on Sunday October 25.

First to cross the line winning the 10km event was Dom Channon (26) of Wanaka with a time of 33.58.

The first female across the

line with a time of 45:05 was Wanaka’s Krystyna Glavinovic. Alexander Dodds of Dunedin won the half marathon in 1:16:45 and Mel Aitken of Dunedin was the first female across the line in 1:21:20 taking out third place overall.

Organiser Terry Davis of Highland Events said that numbers were up on recent years. “It was a great day, a bit warm, but the breeze made it a bit more bearable.”
