Principle 1

•HAVE A GO!•Students &•Parents

Page 21: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

NO NO 1

•“Well I was never any good at Maths…”

Page 22: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

Concern 1

•“What if I’m teaching them wrong?”

Page 23: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

Example 1

• A big difference from Primary is that algebra overtakes number as the main topic.• Solve w = 7

6

Page 24: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

Answer

w = 6 x 7Problem, I don’t my 6 times table………

42

Page 25: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

Example 2

• Two step equation, student wants to solve by substitution.

2x + 3 = 11

Try (5) returns 13 so Try (4)

Page 26: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

Principle 2

•Be open minded about different methods.

Page 27: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

NO NO 2

•When the child says, “You’re just confusing me I’m doing it this way”

Page 28: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

Better Method?

2.) 2x + 3 = 11(-3)

2x = 8(

x = 4

Page 29: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

Example 3

3.) 11x + 3 = 4x -7(-4x)

7x + 3 = -7(-3)

7x = -10(7)

x = -10/7

Page 30: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

NO NO 3

• Don’t say,• “Come on it’s obvious”

Page 31: Walton Science Department Gordon Smith KS3 Manager.

Principle 3

• Always better to stop too soon than too late. You can overdo it and put your child off. Just because they’ve done one thing great doesn’t mean they need to do another 34 tonight.
