In 1932 a new series of stamps was released. It contained a mixture of fish, animals andviews for which Newfoundland is famous. Both fishing and sealing fleets are depicted. In addition, there are portraits of the Royal Family with one being first in the BritishEmpire to portray Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) born on April 21, 1926.This is second issue to have booklets with stamps and advertisements being offered to the public. With differentcoloured covers, number of staples used and the perforation varieties a total of six booklets appear in this issue.Tom Cusick says booklet panes having small size holes in perf. 14 x 14 exist for catalogue #’s 174, 176, 178.PO issued sheets in 100 as 10 horiz. x 10 vert.NSSC believes 1¢, 2¢, 3¢, 4¢, 5¢ were printed as sheets of 4 panes of 100 = 400.Observation taken from watermarked printing paper size and manner of theperforation extensions through the sheet margins.

Note: 1930 Sydney - St. Pierre - St. John’s - Sydney flight is now deleted as it was initially flown from Canada. It was never supported by any government. No mail carried. Envelopes exist with private company’s label. The company was formed in 1930 by J. Robert McCowan, Jr., Charles H. Roy, and George Carter with thepurpose to carry mail between North Sydney, Canada, St. Pierre, France and St. John’s, Newfoundland. The flight was proposed for December 15th, 1930. But none of the three governments sanctioned the operation.Seven months after printing the company stamps a flight was made in August 1931 with 4100 pieces of mail. The Governor of St. Pierre gave permission to take the mail in and out of St. Pierre for this occasion. The mailwas landed at St. Pierre. The French colonial post office authorities did not cooperate. Earlier agreements withthe Governor were not accepted. Entry of the mail into postal system was refused by the authorities. The mailwas left in custody with the St. Pierre Post Office waiting authorization from colonial officials. All covers seizedupon landing were held for 3 years. When the company got the covers returned they applied a small hand stampexplaining the problem; signed by J. R. McGowan. This mail was returned to collectors late in 1934 under cover.Shown here are example of the label and others similar. These and others like them are souvenir items.

The FF 28 flight rate was 15¢ per ½ ounce. A round trip airmail cover required 30¢ to be applied.

DISCOVERY: Two parts of watermarkfound on Nfld. Revenue stamps of 1907King Edward VII; 1911 King George Vissue with imprint. First part is wordCOLUMBIA the stylized letter C is larger;letters are double lined with serifs; secondpart is “stylized ‘branding iron’ motif shield”

with parallel lines running at 90/ angles and in these lines at 45/ angle is ablock having within it uppercase letters. SUPERFINE (seems, Walsh, 1999:16-18; 2004) (is, Andrew Hussey, 2017*) the word. Viewing is from gumbackside. Hussey findings, via document removal, show some watermarks arefound on stamps perf. 12 x 12 used pre 1914. They also exist inverted. Hehas not found watermarks on perf. 11 x11 stamps. He suggests that fromthe watermark size, the sheet was 100 stamps; not all sheets watermarked.*Andrew M. PICTORIAL POST CARDS (viewcards)

Welcome to another exciting aspect of Newfoundland collectibles — PICTURE POST CARDS.Privately printed postcards depicting Newfoundland scenes are an aspect of Newfoundlandia that has grownconsiderably in popularity. Part of their appeal is the nostalgia they inspire for life at the turn of the century, the late Victorian era when cards were introduced. Their heyday was during the Edwardian era which saw thatthe majority of cards were issued and sold.

An exhilarating passage through time is featured on these pictorial postcards from Newfoundland and Labrador.Since 1901, there have been over 5500 images of very picturesque scenes on postcards that portray diverse lifestyles, work and commerce, individuals, architecture, icebergs… and most importantly, panoramic views ofhundreds of communities. Together they encompass an encyclopedic pictorial survey of the heritage of theDominion of Newfoundland.

Picture postcards initially sold in Newfoundland were from the Water Street store of S.E. Garland. However, Ayre and Sons, Limited was Newfoundland's prolific vendor. From 1901 - 1949 they produced over1,000 different images on cards. The Newfoundland merchants had their cards made in Belgium, England,France, Germany, with art work or photographs supplied by the firm placing the order.

Most of the photographs that were used came from cameras of S.H. Parsons and Professor Holloway. Bothhad flourishing photographic studios in St. John’s. Approximately twenty other photographers helped providethe remaining views. Most picture postcards were issued and sold in the years 1904 - 1913, the heyday ofpicture postcards. During World War I and the 1930’s their numbers declined.

We have intentionally not priced picture postcards. Our belief is that prices are too variable. The perceivedvalued for a picture postcard depends on: presence of a specific stamp paying the postal rate, thematic topic beingportrayed, message, cancellations, mint or used state, and general overall condition. However, a selling range of$4 - $10 is often seen on mint cards made by Peco (they are modern era). Other producers generally retail$12 - $35 for mint cards. Postal rated cards often sell at 40% more.

We are grateful for the viewing opportunity of five ‘hugeous’ collections formed by Willis Whalen, W. John Butt,Alison and Richard Moulton, Robin Moore and Brian C. Bursey. The research by Brian C. Bursey led to fillingmany empty spaces. His findings enabled repositioning of postcards relating to the Moravian Mission theme. He found new producers, now listed. Proofed many listing descriptions, correcting them to what is on the actualpostcard. From his large collection of Multi-View postcards and reading C. Ron McGuire, Judith Edwards andDean Mario reports in the literature he created a listing pattern for these cards. Its initial appearance is in NSSC. A thank you to the many collectors who spot and inform NSSC of those pesky unlisted cards. With the Raphael Tuck card listings great revision and improvement happened by and with thanks to researchby David Ogden. He enabled their placement in their proper series and certainly improved the listings.

To the authors' knowledge this catalogue is the first to create such a listing of Newfoundland's pictorial or pictureviewcards and Multi-View postcards.

The Walsh Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue Numbers are the Arabic numerals preceding each listing in the Picture Post Card section. These numbers belong to Walsh Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue.

ADVERTISING BUSINESS COVERS & CORNER CARDS

Attractive or historically interesting business corner cards and advertising covers have been collected and studiedby postal history specialists for more than a century. Philatelists specializing in the postal history of the Colonyand later Dominion of Newfoundland have often supplemented their stamp collections with advertising coversand business corner cards of various types:

a) business name with or without return address in upper left cornerb) corner card with business name and address and product names and/or logo(s)c) advertising cover with illustrations front and/or back in black & white or in colour.

Collecting advertising corner cards is a challenging hobby. The exact numbers, having names and addressesof pre-1949 Newfoundland businesses, are unknown, so the interested collector had to proceed without thebenefit of reliable published research. Some covers have very fine artistic and informative illustrations of theproduct(s) that the business sold. They provide a contemporary portrait of the styles, fashions, inventions andproducts that were noteworthy in their day. Similar to newspaper ads, they illustrate the considerable talent ofcommercial artists here and elsewhere. Many informational finds provided by Melvin Penney, Murray Smithand Jim ‘Hunter’ Ruffell.

Often times an outport or an inland town would have more than one business buying or selling the same products. However, not all businesses in that community would have printed stationery or even a rubber stamp. From 1857to 1949 there were scattered along a coastline of 10,900 miles and, as well, inland, nearly 1200 communities withpost offices. Many small communities without post offices also existed. If one could find a corner card or commercialcover from each of these locations it would be a mammoth collection to behold! A very formidable challenge facesthe collector since small businesses were often short-lived, especially during frequent recessions and depressions.

We have listed these advertising covers and corner cards to try and give an incentive to collectors to embark on theelusive search for commercial covers. To the authors’ knowledge this is the first catalogue to attempt such a listingwith at least 3000 presently being listed.

The Walsh Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue Numbers are the Arabic numerals preceding eachlisting in the Advertising Covers and Corner Cards section. These numbers are the property of theWalsh Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue.
