New look launched The Walpole and Districts Community Directory was

launched last week. The Walpole Community

Resource Centre’s Communications manager, Claudia

Simpson, welcomed the crowd and thanked the

advertisers for their contributions.

The 2016-17 Directory has a new look. Each category is

colour coded, making for easier navigation and the

cover art work by Elizabeth Edmonds, from her jewel

beetle series (2014-2015) adds a fresh splash of colour.

Part of the changes include the listing of advertisers on

the WalpoleOnline website. Uploads are expected to

begin late in July.

The Walpole CRC team, as always, provided a

delicious spread, catered by local businesses: Tingles

Bakehouse, Top Deck Café, Flaming Hot, Walpole

Hotel Motel and wines by Old Kent River Wines. The

exact numbers of attendees is uncertain, however last

count was over sixty-three!

Thank you to all the advertisers, Liz Edmonds for the

artwork on the cover and the CRC staff who make this

publication a success.

The Walpole and Districts Community Directory is

available for free to advertisers and locals listed within.

Residents and business owners are reminded to collect

Congratulations to Mark McLauchlin in receiving the Captain’s Trophy at the recent Walpole Volunteer Fire and Rescue AGM. Mark is relatively new to the brigade but has shown vigour and enthusiasm to become a real asset and “breath of fresh air”. He has thrown himself into the rigours of training courses and will be a fully qualified Volunteer Fire Fighter 4 by the end of the year. His endeavours and enthusiasm have won the confidence of the brigade and hence he has been elected as the new Captain. Captain McLauchlin told the Weekly, "I am looking forward to continuing work with DFES, Walpole community and other emergency services in our amazing town. The opportunity to serve as captain and receive the Captain’s award is a great honour and an exciting opportunity. Thank you to all the members of the Walpole VFRS brigade for their support and to Rhonda Perpoli for her many years of leadership " Mark welcomes new volunteers to the brigade to help build, once again, a well prepared team for Road Crash Rescue, Structural Fire Fighting and Bush Fire in the District. Do you know someone who is a “fence sitter”? Would you like to reflect on this creatively? Well here is your opportunity. On the weekend of the 8th & 9th October as part of the Blooming Wild Festival and in conjunction with the Festival of Country Gardens, community groups, individuals and businesses in the towns of Bridgetown, Balingup, Greenbushes, Boyup Brook, Nannup, Northcliffe, Pemberton, Manjimup and Walpole are invited to create ephemeral art installations that reflect the theme “Fence Sitters”. An ephemeral art piece is temporary and many forms can be considered including sand, felt and wool bombing, wood, natural fibres, chalk, etc. The only limitation is your imagination and the more installations in each community or on farms between towns increases the promotional opportunities and engagement with the arts. An arts trail map will be promoted to encourage residents and visitors to travel through each town and view the artworks on display. The ephemeral art trail will also be featured on the Blooming Wild Festival website www.bloomingwild.com.au

Artists are requested to dismantle the installations at the conclusion of the weekend and to consider risk management, pedestrians, no inclusion of sharp objects or profanities and any Council or Health requirements. Denmark Council Adopts Corporate Business Plan Council adopted its Corporate Business Plan at its meeting on Tuesday 5th July 2016. The Plan is for the four year period 2016-17 to 2019-20. In March, the Plan was adopted in draft form for the purpose of community comment and was advertised. Four local community groups responded with submissions and the Plan was amended as a result of each of the submissions.

The Corporate Business Plan lists the numerous actions and projects that the Shire will focus on over the next period of four years.

Deputy President Kelli Gillies said “The Corporate Business Plan is part of a suite of documents that is required to be completed to be compliant with the Local Government Act. Council is pleased that this requirement has now been achieved and follows on from the recent review of the Strategic Plan. By the end of next month we are hopeful that Council can consider the Long Term Financial Plan which will cover the period 2016 to 2026”.

The Corporate Business Plan will be the subject of further review and updating in 2017.

There has been a unanimous response about how wonderful the work is, the content, quality and penmanship of all the children. The DRAW+ exhibition runs until August 4th and can be viewed daily at Petrichor Gallery in Walpole.

Fourteen talented young artists from Walpole launched a new exhibition DRAW+ on Friday.

The exhibition is a culmination of work produced by the children (aged six to thirteen) during three half day school holiday workshops held at Petrichor Gallery that explored the medium of drawing including pencil and ink, new techniques and processes, with inspiration drawn from the local flora. “It was hard to believe that there were fourteen children in the gallery on those days. They were all so quiet concentrating on their work surrounded by inspiring artwork and keen to complete their pieces,” said art teacher Jenny Kendrick. “The quality, variety and talent unfolding was just a joy to watch.” “The children got to experience the whole art process from conception to production, culminating in their pieces

Four Great Southern artists will be exhibiting a wide variety of encaustic art works at the Vancouver Arts Centre in Albany between Thursday 21st and Saturday 30th July 2016. These artists include Marilyn Barrington, Leanne Fry, Annie Johnson and Terri Pikora who received the Vancouver Arts Curator and Artist Funding in 2015 to support the exhibition. This exhibition will showcase the journey and influences that each of the four artists has developed as a result of being travel companions to the inaugural Australian Encaustic Camp in NSW during October 2014. On show will be each artist’s unique ways of working with encaustic medium that have evolved over a number of years and will include both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works. There will be artist talks between 2.00 and 3.00 pm on Saturday 23rd July at the VAC which will provide an insight into the processes that have been used to create each of their unique styles. Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” (enkaustikos). Heat is used throughout the process, from melting the beeswax and resin to fusing the layers of wax. Encaustic medium consists of natural beeswax and dammar resin (crystallised tree sap). The medium is melted and applied with a brush or any tool the artist wishes to use. Each layer is then reheated to fuse it to

Encaustic: Explore, Layer, Evolve the previous layer. Encaustic painting is an ancient technique, dating back to the Greeks, who used wax to caulk ship hulls. Pigmenting the wax gave rise to decorations on the warships. In the 1st through 3rd centuries A.D. Greek painters in Egypt used encaustic in the painting of Fayum funeral portraits, which are the only surviving encaustic works from ancient times and the colour has remained fresh due to the protection of wax. There has been a rebirth of encaustic in recent times. It is perhaps ironic that in this modern age, with an emphasis on advanced technology, a painting technique as ancient and involved as encaustic has received increasing interest.

Drivers on key routes in the region are being exposed to the Walpole Wilderness Discovery Centre (WWDC) through a mobile promotional message board on the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk’s vehicle. Metallic green and purple colours, which reflect the Walpole Wilderness brand, have been used to highlight the three sites which form the award-winning WWDC. Parks and Wildlife regional manager Peter Keppel said it was important to raise awareness of some of the amazing sites across the region including the world-famous Tree Top Walk, Swabrick Art Loop and the spectacular Mount Frankland Wilderness Lookout. “The area has benefitted considerably from a strong focus by the State Government’s Parks for People initiative which encourages more West Australians to visit and enjoy our national parks. With the recent opening of The Gap lookout in Torndirrup National Park, we are building a critical mass of tourism opportunities,” Mr Keppel said. “It is important for us to continue to look at ways to promote our park facilities with innovation and the vehicle branding is one component of a marketing strategy which includes print, social media, trade shows and media familiarisations. “The car is already creating a stir, with drivers giving it the thumbs up, pedestrians waving and talking to the staff member when the vehicle is stationary. It’s basically a mobile visitor centre with many

promotional fliers being distributed and information given to interested people. “It’s a great way to engage with the public and the support shown so far tells us that many people have either visited some of the attractions or are thinking of visiting in the near future. “I am confident the mobile message board will become well recognised as it travels across the region and in the Perth metropolitan area, which is a key target group for us.”

In just one month’s time, millions of people across Australia will pause to complete the 17th national Census of Population and Housing, in what could be the country’s largest and most significant online event. The 2016 Census will employ more than 39,000 temporary staff who will travel a distance equivalent to almost 200 trips around the circumference of the planet in order to count over 24- million people in about 10-million households, who come from over 200 countries and speak over 300 different languages. Head of the 2016 Census, Duncan Young, said the August 9 Census will be the easiest and most accessible ever, with people able to complete their Census from their own home on their smartphone, tablet or computer. We expect 16 million people to complete the survey online. “Later this month and into early August, the ABS will deliver some 10 million letters to every household around the country in preparation for Census night,” Mr Young said. “These letters will be addressed ‘To the Resident’ and include a unique login and instructions on how to complete the Census online, as well as details on how to request a paper Census form.” While a majority of Australians won’t hear from the ABS for a few weeks to come, Census Remote Area Mobile Team Leader, Steven Pearce, has driven 4,500km across northern Australia in the last two weeks, to ensure everyone in his remote area is counted as part of the Census. “Within the 160,000 square kilometre area which I’m helping to count, I estimate there’d be less than 3,000 people living here, but that does not mean the data is less important,” Mr Pearce said. “My primary task now is to make contact with the communities and all the relevant stakeholders in those communities and lay a bit of groundwork which will enable us to carry out the Census in as efficient a manner as possible.” Mr Young said the ABS’ 105 Remote Area Mobile teams highlight the ABS’ extensive efforts to ensure everyone in Australia completes a Census form

The national Census has been a part of Australia since just after Federation and provides the most comprehensive and accurate picture of our rapidly growing and changing population. Despite 16 previous Censuses over 105 years, the 2016 Census will coincide with the Olympics for the first time ever this year. Mr Young hopes that while Australians are waiting for the swimming finals to start on August 9 they will do their bit for the country by completing their Census. “The 2016 Census is Australia’s moment to pause and make a difference, and help shape the future of Australia’s investment in housing, roads, schools and hospitals.” Mr Young said.
