Walpole Day

BYHAYDEN BIRDHometown Weekly Staff

As part of Walpole Day, WallyAward winners from this year’s firstannual “Wally’s” will be in theSaturday parade. Included in this willbe Bird Middle School AssistantPrincipal Damon Rainie.

Rainie was awarded the prestigiousrecognition as Walpole’s “Mentor ofthe Year”.

“Definitely it was an honor and asurprise,” noted Rainie, reflecting onthe award. “I wasn’t even aware thatI had been nominated. It was a verypleasant surprise that way.”

The significance of the recognitiontook on particular meaning to Rainie, considering the manner in which hewas chosen.

“It meant a lot to me because itcame from members of thecommunity on their own initiative,”Rainie said of being selected as thefirst “Mentor of the Year”.

Nonetheless, he was quick to

distribute much of the credit he’sreceived onto colleagues who makeup the faculty and staff at BirdMiddle School.

“While it’s a nice to be recognized,”he said, “I think I’m reaping thebenefits of having a really good teamhere at Bird. We put the kids firstand give them leadershipopportunities.”

A chance to lead, Rainie pointedout, is important for young people, especially those in middle school.

“It’s important that they learn to beleaders when they’re at that age,”Rainie added, “and that’s what weencourage.”

Since starting as a substitute teacherat Bird Middle School in 2001,Rainie has moved steadily upward inthe school’s system. He was a teacherfor six years following his work as asubstitute.

Subsequently, he has been in hiscurrent position as assistant principalfor five years.
