Why are target symbols popping up on south coast beaches? It’s part of an aerial survey underway by the Shire of Denmark studying coastal erosion.
“You may see these 'targets' painted in various places at those locations,” the Shire said.
“These are GPS targets that allow us to build 3D images of our coastline.
“From the imagery, we can follow sand movement over time, and understand seasonal and long term trends of erosion, helping us make better informed decisions about coastal management and planning.”

Blockade established to defend old-growth karri forest scheduled for clearfelling. In a massive breach of community trust and expectation, an old-growth karri forest near Manjimup is scheduled for clear-felling this week. A nonviolent community protest has been set up in defence.
“The forest is known as Lewin 06. It’s astoundingly beautiful, one of the most beautiful, ancient karri forest ecosystems in the world,” said Jess Beckerling, convener of the WA Forest Alliance.
“We first came across this forest two years ago on a survey. Bulldozers were parked over the weekend, having pushed tracks into what was obviously an old-growth forest. We stopped the logging with a community old-growth nomination which found 17-hectares of old-growth forest, a diverse ecotype zone and a large eagle’s nest that had been missed in the planning process.
Over the past two years we have spent a lot of time in Lewin 06, and stayed in conversation with FPC and the Government about its incredible value. We were shocked and dismayed to hear last week that loggers were returning.
Now the loggers are back for the rest of this forest, which is also old-growth but has been disqualified from old-growth status and protection on the most absurd grounds,” she said.
In WA, we are very proud of our State policy to protect old-growth forests from logging. It was a very hard fought campaign that tens of thousands of people were personally involved and deeply invested in. It’s something we collectively take very much to heart.
The problem is that the definition of old-growth was written in such a way that it underestimates the true extent of old-growth and fails to protect all the State’s precious old-growth forests.

Thought for the day “Worry is like a rocking chair: it gives you
something to do, but never gets you anywhere.”
~ Erma Bombeck
Continued from page 4... In the karri forests just one stump from a tree cut down sometime in past 150 years or so disqualifies that area of forest from official old-growth status and protection. A further ‘minimum area rule’ means that small or irregularly shaped areas of old-growth forest are excluded from protection even when no trees have been cut down in the past. This goes against community expectations and an ecological application of the national old-growth forest definition.
Lewin 06 should be immediately protected. It is a mistake for this forest to be on logging plans. And the old-growth definition should be urgently improved to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
We call on the McGowan Government to urgently to pull loggers out of Lewin forest and correct the definition of old-growth forest being applied by DBCA and the FPC to ensure that our precious old-growth forests are fully protected,” said Ms Beckerling.

Walpole featured in the June 1st edition of the online GreyNomads.com.au Below : The free camping area in Walpole in WA’s south west has been massively popular with grey nomads and other travellers … but some local residents are beginning to have second thoughts. After seeking comments on the issue, Manjimup Shire received 34 submissions … of which approximately 70% opposed the current situation in which RVs park for free overnight in a bitumenised area across the South Coast Highway from the town centre.
The Voice of the South newspaper reports that the Walpole Town Centre Revitalisation Committee is pushing to change things up, perhaps by seeing a $10 fee introduced and finding a different spot for overnight campers.
The committee’s community member Ivan Gardner, who lives and works directly across from the parking area, said that free overnight RV stays had ‘choked’ the parking lot up in summer.

Now that the federal election is over, the role regional Australia played in the result is being analysed with great interest.
In the lead up to polling day, the Regional Australia Institute was often asked the same question - what is it that regional Australia needs?
The results of our Policy Hack in Canberra earlier this year certainly gave a clear direction of what that was, and called for a new approach to the way government works with regional Australia.
Whether you live in south-west Western Australia or northern NSW, local needs can be very different, reflecting the diversity that is regional Australia.
However, as a collective group, regional Australia needs governments to invest in “soft” infrastructure - put simply, governments need to invest in people and the places that they live.
While we know investment in infrastructure such as roads, rail and airports is critical, our research is showing that regional Australia needs a rebalanced direction.
Investing in human capital has to be pushed further up the agenda to meet jobs demand of the future.
On June 12, we're heading to Perth to roll-out the next of our national event series - Regions Rising 2019 - where we are elevating the issues most critical to regional Australia.
As we head around the country, we will also be unveiling key RAI research.
In Perth, Western Australia's Regional Development Minister, Alannah MacTiernan, will be launching our Regional Growth Prospects Report.
Regional people want less blanket policy, more strategic support

This report looks at four industries important to the economic success of regional Australia - food processing, tourism, advanced manufacturing and creative industries.
The report takes a deep dive into the job market of these four sectors - to find out where they matter the most in regional Australia.
This piece of research will enable policy makers and regional stakeholders to prioritise investment opportunities and help drive local economies in a more strategic way - and ultimately drive job growth.
In 2016, the last census count revealed 221,592 regional Australians were employed in tourism, 31,286 in advanced manufacturing, 95,660 in the creative industry sector and 86,562 in food processing.
Growth in these industries could lead to increased employment and the positive socioeconomic benefits this brings to a local community.
For the regions where this matters most, regional leaders will need to take a good look at the workforce and skill availability in their regions and act to ensure potential new jobs can be filled.
To do this, regions might like to look at implementing regional learning systems (growing workers from within) or regional migration strategies - as outlined in the RAI's recent The Future of Regional Jobs Report.
There are many examples of where regional communities are ahead of government and driving their own communities through locally-led strategies around education and jobs - but people want to be supported.
Once our report is released, we're encouraging regional leaders to take a look and see how your region is tracking, then kick start conversations about what plans are needed for the future.
The RAI's Policy Hack in Canberra confirmed that regional Australians want to be empowered through the implementation of flexible and place-based policy that resonates with where they live.
This reflects a shift from the blanket polices that often seek to ease the burden of administrative functions, towards the people and place itself, and towards the intended outcomes of the intervention.
The RAI's Regional Growth Prospects Report will be available on our website on June 12.

know that people want RVs, but they don’t want them parking overnight in the main street … and we don’t want it to be free, anything that’s free gets abused to the billyo.”
Manjimup councillor David Tapley has called for a fee of $10 per night be charged at eight to 10 overnight RV parking spaces to be created somewhere else in Walpole.
Cr Tapley told The Voice of the South that the west end of Pioneer Park, or Town Jetty, were two possible locations for a purpose-built RV park. He said he would prefer the existing parking lot in town be for rest only, and not for overnight stays.
He expressed confidence that a balance could be reached between the needs of locals and those of the RV community.
Shire planner Brian Robinson has advised that a report would be prepared for consideration at the next Shire Council meeting on June 13, and he promised the report would address the committee’s comments.

Business of the Month...Shop local!
By C Smith, CRC Communications
WalpoleOnline.com is your local online business directory and our June business of the month is Walpole Australia Post.
There has been a postal service of some description in Walpole pretty much since the community was first established. Over the years the Post Office has changed homes a few times; had some absolutely wonderful people looking after Walpole’s postal needs; and steadily grown into what the small business is today.
In 2002, Louise Pickett, together with Pam Pernich, bought the business and Louise took on the Australia Post licence. At that time, the post office was operating at the front of Burton Realty and, with limited space, provided postal products and did the mail processing.
In 2004, the New Post Office was built and the product range was expanded to include all the range of retail products that we have today as well as providing the community with bill payment and banking services. Australia Post is an agency for more than 70 banking facilities including the Commonwealth Bank,
Pictured: Lynn Jolley, Walpole Australia Post
BankWest, Nab, Westpac and Bendigo Bank; making it possible for community members to do deposits and withdrawals with your eftpos card.
Over the last 17 years there has been a huge change in the way that we operate with significant technology changes across the board. We have seen a downturn in letters being posted due to the increased use of email and other social media options. On the other hand, there has been a big jump in parcel postage due to online purchasing.
We have a great team at the Post Office with Lyn and Fiona always at hand to help with your postal needs and retail selections, and Katie who makes sure your mail is sorted in record time each day. We’re here to help in any way we can.

Nationally recognised choreographer, Annette Carmichael, is seeking 200 women to create her next large-scale dance performance, Chorus.
Chorus is a community project that brings together women from Denmark, Bunbury, Mandurah, Ravensthorpe, Perth and Albany with the final performances happening on the long weekend in March 2020 in Denmark. Months of planning and rehearsals will create a powerful and deeply meaningful experience for performers and audience.
When describing the project Annette said: Chorus is a dance performance that calls for the end of violence against women. It holds hope and optimism at its core and is inspired by the peace marches and group actions of women across the world calling for equality and demanding safety.
Annette is inviting women aged 14 years and over to participate in the project. No prior experience is required. For Denmark women there are three different ways to get involved depending on your physical capacity and time available. For Albany women the project picks up quickly with a week of workshops in the July school holidays.
Local dance artists, Holly Carter and Sumer Addy join Annette alongside composer James Gentle and designers Kevin Draper and Indra Geidans to create this epic production.
The performance utilises contemporary dance which is created in collaboration with the participants and suits many \different ages and abilities.
