Welcome Dear subscriber,

Tank you so much for supporting our magazine. Walking Pages is an exclusive gif for you, compiling superb places to eat, drink and sleep wherever your outdoors adventures take you.

We know that fnding a good hostelry, a cosy tearoom or a welcoming place to lay your head are essentials of an enjoyable walking break. Many people we know even plan their walks around the presence of a decent pub at the start, the end, the halfway point or all three! So it’s vital to fnd establishments that really understand the needs and interests of walkers, and it’s to places like these that we’ve reached out to bring you this booklet. We hope you’ll fnd it useful in making your future walks something very special.

THE NORTH YORK MOORSPerfect for walkers looking for a real escape, and fringed by the Yorkshire coast and the Vale of York, with the towns of Helmsley, Pickering and Great Ayton providing superb base camps, these moors are a real treat, whether the trail takes you to the summit of shapely Roseberry Topping, across the vastness of Rosedale Moor, or to the depths of dafodil-strewn Farndale.

THE YORKSHIRE DALESPerhaps the quintessential north English landscape, the Dales ofers a delightful world of deep, wide valleys latticed by drystone walls and dotted with tumbledown barns, topped by soaring limestone hills such as Wether Fell, Lovely Seat, Addleborough and the famed Yorkshire 3 Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside.

THE LAKE DISTRICTTis National Park consists of around 250 distinct mountain summits and two dozen beautiful lakes. Whether you base yourself in Langdale, Keswick, Ambleside or Grasmere, and whether your target is a lofy Great Gable or a friendly Cat Bells, any walk in the Lake District is a great adventure.

NORTHUMBERLANDTese high uplands, typifed by Te Cheviot and

Windy Gyle, are far less visited than the Lakes or the Dales, and a world apart in character. Tis is also Hadrian’s Wall country, ofering many walkers the challenge of a lifetime.

THE WEST YORKSHIRE MOORLANDSTe heather-fecked hills above Huddersfeld and Halifax ofer superb walking and a great literary tradition. It was these windswept hills that inspired the Brontë sisters – Anne, Emily and Charlotte – to create some of the world’s greatest romantic fction.

THE YORKSHIRE COASTTraversed spectacularly by the Cleveland Way, the headlands and inlets of the Yorkshire coast are a sight to behold. Walk out along the shark-fn promenade of Filey Brigg, or down among the fshing nets of Robin Hood’s Bay; fnd a fossil at Ravenscar or tread the footsteps of Dracula at Whitby; this coast is full of magic, mystery – and gobsmacking views.

THE DEEP SOUTH WESTCornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset boast some of the most fabulously varied scenery in Europe . Here you will fnd the two vast upland National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor: the frst raw and wild, the second rich, fertile and ablaze with wildlife. Ten there is the less-frequented wilderness of Bodmin, dotted with standing stones and rinsed in Arthurian legend. And fnally, one of the greatest coastlines in the world, linked by the longest and best-loved of all the National Trails: the South West Coast Path. Every walk on this ocean-hugging roller coaster is a classic.

THE SOUTH DOWNSLinked by the epic thread of the 110-mile South Downs Way, these great green domes with their fesh of chalk and distinctive villages are a haven for walkers seeking an escape from the frantic pace of life. Stand atop the mighty Seven Sisters and you’ll see why this landscape has inspired artists, poets and walkers for generations.

THE NORTH DOWNSClose to London yet also quiet and calm, these wooded hills range from Farnham in Surrey to

Dover on the Kent coast, via such highlights as Leith Hill, Box Hill, Martha’s Hill, Newlands Corner and the great city of Canterbury. Tere’s no better way to enjoy ‘Te Garden of England’.

THE COTSWOLDSA range of hills as magnifcent as the honey-stoned villages beneath them are beautiful, the Cotswolds call to walkers from all around the globe. Walk the villages of Snowshill, Bourton or Winchcombe, or climb the heights of Broadway Tower, Cleeve Hill and Bredon Hill, and discover icons of Englishness at every turn.

THE NORFOLK BROADSNowhere sounds like the Broads. With the swish of sails on barges, the keening of seabirds overhead, the put-put-put of little motor boats, and the creaking of medieval windpumps beside twisting waterways – this is an area defned by water, always with a footpath nearby, and an endless sky above.

THE PEAK DISTRICTPossibly the nation’s most varied National Park, split as it is between two astonishingly diferent landscapes of white limestone and dark millstone grit. Sandwiched between the great cities of Shefeld, Manchester and Derby yet bafingly vast and serene, the Peak District ofers deep-carved valleys, explorable caves and moorland plateaux to challenge any walker with a soul.

SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL ENGLANDClifftops, downland, peaks and waterways…

…AND NOT FORGETTINGThe spectacular pyramids of the Malverns, the ancient tracks of the Ridgeway, the great mystery of the Shropshire Hills, the gentle canal paths of Warwickshire, the great empty fenlands of Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire…

Seaford Head, in the South Downs.

THE FAR NORTHA delicious mixture of isolated, unspoilt towns and villages and Britain at its most enigmatic, its rough coastline terminates in the epitome of wild isolation: Cape Wrath. Don’t miss Lochinver with its fabulous interactive visitor centre and gateway to Scotland’s most remarkable mountains including Suilven, Stac Pollaidh and Quinag. Te unique, rolling blanket bogs of Flow Country can be appreciated north of Lairg.

Mallaig is the gateway to the Isles, and for anyone who wishes to kick-start the Munros, Glen Shiel ofers the best place to begin, with superlative ridges on both sides of the road.

THE ISLANDSWhatever you seek in the outdoors, you’ll fnd it on the Isle of Skye – from dreamlike walks on the felty grass of the Trotternish Ridge to the

Jura, Mull and Arran represent miniatures of Scotland’s fnest scenery, while slices of historic charm can be found on Eigg and Iona.

More comely attractions can be found near Mofat and Peebles, and in the Galloway Forest Park, one of Europe’s Dark Sky Parks.

THE CAIRNGORMSVast and high, the Cairngorms represent the most expansive high ground in Britain, and are home to Ben Macdui (1309m) and mountain passes like the Lairig Ghru. SNOWDONIATe heartland of Welsh mountain scenery, Snowdonia can rightly claim to host the most spectacular landscapes south of Scotland, and many would argue it even outclasses its Highland cousin. Base yourself in the villages of Capel Curig or Beddgelert and it would be difcult to argue, with Snowdon, Moel Siabod, the Nantlle Ridge and the Ogwen Valley all providing knockout mountain scenery to walk among as well as gaze at. Meanwhile Betws-y-Coed easily earns its ‘adventure capital’ stripes with whitewater rivers, forests and mountain trails bristling at its doorstep. Further south, Dolgellau ofers a perfect base for exploring Cadair Idris, one of the most storied mountains in Britain, which harbours a route for every ability.

BRECON BEACONSIn another of Wales’ National Parks, one of the most popular hillwalks in Britain will take you to the summit of Pen y Fan, highest mountain in the area and utterly unique in appearance. Te Beacons Way is a long distance trail that traverses the park west to east, while the Taf Trail makes a south-north pilgrimage from Cardif Bay to Brecon, following the course of its namesake river. Expanses of gentle slopes, peculiar, angular hills and status as a Dark Sky Reserve all enhance this spectacular region’s charm.

THE BORDERSTe 177-mile Ofa’s Dyke Path is perhaps the fnest way to explore the region that demarcates Wales from England, taking in some wonderful scenery along its ancient route between Chepstow and Prestatyn. In the south of the

region, the hills around Abergavenny – including Skirrid Fawr, Black Hill and Blorenge – make for easy, inspiring walking.

PEMBROKESHIRE & GOWERTe wild south of Wales has one of the UK’s most stunning coastlines, exemplifed perfectly at Marloes Peninsula and Skomer Island, or anywhere along the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coast Path, particularly between Abereiddy to Porthgain, and Mumbles – with its awesome Tree Clifs Bay and Dylan Tomas heritage. Meanwhile the Gower Peninsula ofers a perfectly formed slice of the magnifcence of this special part of Wales, and it has been justly decreed an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

WalesLegends, extraordinary landscapes and long distance paths...

…AND NOT FORGETTINGThe beautiful Lleyn Peninsula and Anglesey, the wild and rugged Rhinogs, the Denbigh Moors and the small but perfectly formed Sugar Loaf – surely one of the most iconic hills in south Wales!

Enjoying Snowdonia sunshine.
