reaching? 3. How do we as believers today keep our focus on Jesus? What

most distracts modern believers from developing a love for Jesus? 4. Offer a biblical description of an earthly mindset. How are people

with these thoughts enemies of the cross? 5. Who is your model for someone who keeps his/her focus

heavenward and fixed on Jesus? Does he/she have joy? 6. What is one practice you can begin to do daily that will help you

press on to the goal to win the prize (know Christ)?

Phil. 3:10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow,

attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

PRESS FORWARD TOWARD THE GOAL 1. Paul’s pursuit of Christ was ongoing. Phil 3:12a Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal,

a. Paul had not yet obtained _____________. He had not already taken ______ of; he had not _________ arrived. b. He did have a ______ in mind.

1.) τετελείωµαι holds the meaning “to finish, to make complete, to perfect”. Some have translated this to mean that Paul “had not already been made _________”.

2.) However, at the root of this verb is the idea of bringing something to its _____. Paul had a finish line in mind that he had yet to reach. He was striving for ____________ and not perfection. 2. Paul had a ____________ pursuit of Christ. Phil 3:12b but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13a Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.

a. There is no room for _____________. Paul’s goal was worth pursuing with all his might.

b. He pressed to ______ ______ of what Christ had _______ ______ of. What does this mean?

1.) Christ wanted Paul to do _________. a.) Christ radically converted Paul for the purpose of proclaiming the Gospel. The Lord calls Paul His “_________ of ________”. Acts 9:15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.

b.) Even as a prisoner in Rome, Paul continued to work as an evangelist and ____________. Phil 1:12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.

2.) Christ wanted Paul to be _________.

a.) Paul understood death as his ultimate victory. Phil1:21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far.

b.) For Paul those who believe are brothers and sisters, children of God, co-heirs with Christ. Romans 8:16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

3. Paul had a ______ plan and an end ______. Phil 3:13b But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

a. The game plan: Paul left his ___________ past behind him. He did not take credit for his failures or his victories.

FOLLOW A WORTHY EXAMPLE Phil 3:17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 1. The best way to gain a ________ for Christ is to watch and imitate a person who has demonstrated a ________ for Christ. Phil 3:18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their

stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

STAND FIRM IN THIS WAY Phil 4:1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!
