Making the ChangesTo maximise your chances of keeping those
resolutions, here's some tips.
1. Write down your goals. If they're down in black
and white you'll have something to refer to
later.
2. Be realistic. They're got to be achievable
3. Be specific. Rather than; 'I want to lose
weight', make it 'I want to lose 7lb by the end
of February, to help me get to my ideal weight
by June'.
4. Work out the practicalities of actually
implementing your goals, for example; 'To
lose that 7lb, I'm going to swim three times a
week and cut out biscuits'.
5. Set deadlines and a timeframe to reach your
goals and be prepared for the slump, when
your initial enthusiasm gives way to the
drudgery of doing it.
6. Don't try to do too much at once. Stopping
smoking, losing weight and getting fit all at
once is probably a bridge too far for most
people and you're more likely to fail on all
counts and s oo late to get the help you
need.
9. Keep a diary of your progress. Psychologists
say that keeping a record of what you've done
makes it more likely you'll stick to your regimen
and reach your goal.
And if you fall off the wagon and drift back into
your old ways, don't worry another New Year is
around the corner for you to try again!

New Year’sResolutionsWhy do we make them?New Year’s Resolutions are a great idea and most
people make them in varying degrees of
seriousness, The idea is sound cleanse oneself of
bad habits and start again with a clean slate. We
pledge to lose weight, exercise more, and quit
smoking. We decide to save more, spend less,
become more organised.
But do our resolutions work? Usually not, say
psychologists, because they're based on wishful
thinking rather than commitment. And more often
than not, we set ourselves up to fail, knowing as
we make the resolution, we are unlikely to keep to
it. It’s almost a game of ‘lets see how many days I
can manage this year, before I fall off the wagon!”
So does this mean we should forget about New
Year's resolutions altogether? Not at all. It’s a
useful exercise to take stock and realise that there
are some things in our lives we'd like to change.
Finding the right way to go about it is the answer.
The New Year is useful in that it gives us time to
mentally prepare for the changes we are trying to
make – knowing we're going to have to make them
sooner or later. The holiday season might be a
good time to view the past year with objectivity to
see what does and doesn't need to change and
the New Year can bring a sense of focus and
renewed energy to make the changes and if or
when you feel your focus and resolve slipping -
usually towards the end of January, seek help to
keep you on the straight and narrow.

PLANNING Avoid congested areasA little time spent planning your route can significantly reducethe time spent in the car. It’s arguably better to be on the move than stuck in heavytraffic.....plus it helps keep your blood pressure in check!!
PREPARATIONHave a clear out Remove all your unnecessary items from the back seat and inparticular your boot. Excess weight uses more fuel - an extra100lbs of weight can increase your fuel bill by 2%.Tyre PressureCheck your tyres to make sure that they are at therecommended level. Research shows that for every 6psi the
tyre is underinflated your fuel consumption increases by 1% -under inflated tyres can cause fuel consumption to increaseby as much as 6%.
ON THE MOVETake your time Harsh acceleration and heavy braking all contribute toexcessive fuel consumption and can consume up to 30%more fuel. Accelerate slowly and smoothly and then get intohigh gear as quickly as possible,Slow down Driving at a reduced speed will undoubtedly help with the fuelconsumption of your vehicle. As a rule anything over 3000revs makes your car less fuel efficient. Driving at 70mph asopposed to 50mph can consume 25% more fuel so reduceyour speed and drive steadily.Parking Parking the car is everybody’s least favourite manoeuver but ifyou can get into the habit of reversing your car into a parkingspace you could save fuel and money. Your car is far lessefficient when cold and consumes much more fuel whenreversing. Reverse into the bay when parking up so that youcan simply drive away forwards when you leave.Air ConditioningUse your air conditioner sparingly. Using you vehicle’s airconditioner on a hot summer day can increase fuelconsumption as much as 10% in city driving. At low speeds,opening the window will reduce fuel consumption by reducingAirCon use. At higher speeds however, using the AirCon maybe more efficient than the wind resistance from open windowsand sunroof.

‘Mothering Sunday’ was originally the day when in
16th Century Christian practice one would make
an annual visit to one's mother church, which
meant that most mothers would be reunited with
their children on this day. Later it was the one day
a year when servants were allowed to visit their
families. In the UK it’s celebrated on the fourth
Sunday in Lent, but in the US and many other
countries, they have a fixed date, often the second
Sunday in May.
Whether it’s called Mother’s Day or Mothering
Sunday, most countries in the world have chosen
to celebrate motherhood every year, but it’s
becoming more and more commercialised and the
original sentiments forgotten. It is now largely a
secular festival, becoming one of the biggest
occasions for gift giving and card sending after
Christmas and one of the most popular days of the
year for eating out (so if you were thinking of
treating your mum ot a meal out, book early!)
According to the Flowers & Plants Association,
Mother's Day is the biggest event in the UK's cut
flower and indoor plant industry. At this time of year
the UK's sales of cut flowers and indoor plants
increase by an average of 40% on a normal day's
trading. The British Retail Consortium reckon that
around £45 million is spent on Mother’s Day cards
with around 30 million cards sent, and around £55
million is spent on chocolates, with around 4
million people buying a box for their Mum.
But it’s become all too easy to nip call into the
petrol station on the way to visiting your Mother to
pick up a card and bunch of cut flowers. Where
has the special occasion and thought disappeared
to?

Start Looking EarlyDon’t leave it too late to start looking for your dress.Many dresses have to be ordered in your size andcould take up to 10 weeks to arrive. You may thenneed alterations to get a perfect fit, so leaving it ‘tilla couple of weeks before the prom is a big no-no!Also, you will need to bear in mind that many shopshave a policy of selling only one style in one colourto any one prom. This ensures that you will be theonly one at your prom with that dress, but it alsomeans that the early shoppers will have the bestpick.If your prom is in May or June, you shouldn’t beleaving it any later than March to order your dress,unless you are happy buying off-the-peg or want anend of line bargain from a previous season.

Be YourselfThe Prom is an opportunity to dress in a way younever have before and to really put on the style.Remember that most are in the same boat and willbe wearing a style of dress that they have neverworn before, so push yourself out of your comfortzone and dress to impress! But don’t overdo it - toenjoy your Prom, you have to be comfortable in yourdress or you’ll spend the whole evening hiding away
Take Someone With You It’s useful to have someone with you whose opinionyou value and trust and who has your best interestat heart. Friends can often subconsciously put youoff a dress if they think it’s too similar to their ownor don’t want to be upstaged, so even with bestfriends tread carefully when looking for your dress.

Baby yoga, which complements infant massage, offersquality physical stimulation including flowing postures,holding, movement, touch, voice and deep relaxation. Itinduces a happy, carefree and lively parent-infantinteraction, which develops as the baby grows. Itencourages pre-verbal communication and enhancesbaby’s physical confidence.The experience of movement combined with touch isprobably the richest stimulation we can offer babies frombirth. Classes usually last for 1 hour per session for a 6week course, and are suitable for babies from 6 weeks tocrawling. A class size of no more than 10 works well. February 27th & 28thWakefield Festival of Food, Drink & RhubarbA line-up of top regional chefs and food experts hasbeen unveiled by organisers of this year's WakefieldFestival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb.
Cookery demonstrations, food tasting sessions anda market full of Yorkshire grown produce are expectedto attract a record number of visitors to this year'sFestival on February 27 and 28. Last year the eventpulled in around 138,000 people.
Cllr Denise Jeffery, Deputy Leader of the Council,with responsibility for culture and tourism, said: "Thisfestival is an important event in calendars not only inthis district, but far and wide because it does attractvisitors from all over the world.
"We are proud to be presenting it again this yearand hope that people will come along to see what wehave to offer."
Deliciouslyorkshire was at the festival for the firsttime last year and it proved such a success that theyare back for 2009. The campaigning brand of theRegional Food Group for Yorkshire and Humber will beshowcasing food and drink from Yorkshire producers.
Deliciouslyorkshire will be in the Cathedral Precinct,along with other selected local food producers. Therewill also be a demonstration marquee and displaysabout Medieval food on the precinct.
Presenters on the Friday will include: Richard
Holmes of Cryer and Stottgiving a talk and tastings ofrhubarb cheese; HeatherCopley of Farmer Copley's willdemonstrate a savoury maincourse and dessert; formerMasterchef finalist and BestChef in Yorkshire winnerJanine Lishman-Peat will cookup some rhubarb dishes;Wakefield College and finalistsfrom Young Chef of the Year;Kevin Grant from the Holiday Inn will be showcasinghis skills and there will be an audience challenge.
Richard Holmes and Heather Copley will also beappearing on the Saturday. Also demonstrating theirskills will be junior chefs from Thomas Danby College,Richard Allen, executive chef at Harvey Nichols inLeeds, and a chef from the Bollywood Loungerestaurant. Ashley McCarthy, the Publican Food andDrink Awards 2008, Chef of the Year will also beappearing in the marquee for the first time. He runs YeOld Sun Inn in Colton, near York.

Puppy Jewel is a preciousgift for local Charity
Wakefield based company Andrell Education have
given local charity Dogs for the Disabled a very
special Christmas Present indeed! Instead of the
usual office secret Santa, company directors Curtis
and Tracey Wilson decided to treat their staff to
something unusual, making a fantastic donation
which the charity have used to purchase an 8 week
old, specially selected Black
Labrador Puppy. This
donation will also will fund the
pup’s journey to becoming a
fully fledged Assistance Dog.
Puppy Sponsors for the
charity are given the option of
naming their new arrival, but
Andrell Education decided to
leave this important decision
to the pupils at Crofton Infant
School, Wakfield. The school
have adopted the charity for a
year, and having received a
visit from the charity’s
Fundraiser, Rowan Martin,
with Assistance Dog in
training Xander, students were inspired to come up
with 10 possible names. Dogs for the Disabled are
pleased to announce that the name ‘Jewel’ was
chosen for the 8 week old pup, who has now been
placed with a puppy socialiser for her first year
before, all being well, she progresses into the
charity’s training program and becomes a qualified
Assistance Dog and is paired with a disabled owner.
Dogs for the Disabled is a national charity which
trains assistance dogs to help with a range of
practical tasks that many of us take for granted
including picking up dropped items, opening and
closing doors, dressing and undressing. Once their
training is completed, dogs are matched with a
disabled owner and a
partnership begins, supported
by the charity until the dog
reaches retirement age.
The charity opened a new
centre in Nostell, Wakefield ,
during the Summer of 2008
and this will allow them to
significantly grow their
services, supporting existing
partnerships in the North of
England area and training new
dogs to be paired with local
people who could benefit from
them.

A community multi skills sports club for young
people with physical and learning difficulties.
Activities are delivered by experienced coaches in
a secure environment, aimed at impriving mobility
skills, coordination and balance. An opportunity to
make new friends and have fun.
The club meets every Monday evening during
term time at Havercroft Sports Centre. Session
times are 6pm - 7pm for 7-11 year olds and 7pm -
8pm for 12-18 year olds.
