“A Quiet Place” - Like myselfthere are a lot of horror moviefans out there-but I am not somuch a fan of the ‘splatter/goreflicks’ f i l led with mindlessviolence; for me the nasty actionhas to be part of the story-notthe story in itself. I am more of afan of ‘gothic’ style horror, andto that end I amalways seekinghorror films thatstand out abovethe crowd forw h a t e v e rreason, and Ifound a greatone this week.“A Quiet Place”is an amazingm o v i e - b u tsome people might be put offby the fact that not a single wordis uttered in the first 38 minutes. No, it is not a silent film-let meexplain. The movie starts on“Day 89” of the year 2020, aftersome sort of invasion bycreatures that look like a crossbetween a spider and amummy; they are also blind buthave super-sensitive hearingthat can detect noises frommiles away-and they kill and eathumans.Actors John Krazinsli and EmilyBlunt are the parents of 3children, but as the youngestone gets attacked and killedearly on in the film we see whatthe dread and fear is all about, and it is terrifying. To compoundmatters their daughter is deaf, and the mom is pregnant.
Each evening the father lightsa signal torch on top of a grainelevator to watch for, andconfirm other torches-but overtime the other torches are fewerand fewer, as humans fall preyto the beasts. Things heat upsubstantially as the mom goesinto premature labour, andwhile making her way down tothe soundproofed basementshe walks on a huge nail in thestairs and drops a glass frame-the noise alerting the beaststhat there’s prey nearby. The
t e n s i o namps up, aswe watch andwonder howshe can firstdeliver thebaby silently-as well ascover thecries of anewborn.
The daughter’s deafnessbecomes a central point in thefilm’s plot as her dad tries invain to scratch together aworking hearing aid-mostly tono avail, until… sorry, nospoiler coming here, you’ll haveto watch the movie to see whathappens. On that note, withoutgiving away too much more themovie’s ending is at firstworrisome, then it takes a greattwist and becomes a verysatisfying one.I have read that some criticscalled this movie a ‘thinkingman’s horror film’, and whilethat may sound a bit pretentiouslet’s agree that the movie is veryclever and doesn’t resort tocheap shots to scare the viewer. It’s actually one of the best, ifnot the best, horror flick I’veseen so far this year. Enjoy!
