About the Wainwright SocietyThe inaugural meeting of ‘The Wainwright Society’ was held on November 9th 2002 at Ambleside Youth Hostel. This was followed by a walk to the summit of Dove Crag, as ‘AW’ had done 50 years before.

The primary aim of the Society is to keep alive the things which AW promoted through the guidebooks, started 57 years ago, and the many other publications which were the ‘labour of love’ of a large portion of his life.

The 2011 Calendar Last years Wainwright Society Calendar raised £9,000 which was divided between the Mountain Rescue Teams in the Lake District and North Pennine areas.

Raising funds for The Calvert TrustThe Wainwright Society is delighted to announce that all the profits generated from sales of the 2012 Wainwright Society Calendar will be donated to The Lake District Calvert Trust.

The Calvert Trust was established in 1974 to enable people with disabilities to benefit from outdoor activities in the countryside. The Lake District Calvert Trust residential activity centre is located at Little Crosthwaite, near Keswick. The ethos of the Trust is ‘Challenging Disability Through Outdoor Adventure’ and a varied programme of activities is offered to visitors including climbing and abseiling, water-based activities, horse riding and hill walking. The aim is to enable people to see beyond their disability and achieve their true potential. The motto of the Trust is ‘It’s what you can do that counts’.

‘Many mountains have been described as having the shape of the inverted hull of a boat, but none of them more fittingly than Yewbarrow, which extends along the west side of Wasdale for two miles as a high and narrow ridge, the prow and the stern coming sharply down to valley level with many barnacled incrustations.’
