Josh says a friend of his sug-gested he gives the initiative a go.

“I got tagged on a Facebook post along with a few others asking who was keen to take part.

“I straight away posted ‘count me in’.”

Josh has worked with many youth in the past, which was part of what infl uenced him to take part in the scheme.

“I have seen what happens when someone is affected by violence,” he says.

“I have also seen the positive work that people put in as well, trying to prevent and help.”

Josh says that everyone knows that violence happens, but do not know when and where, or what to do about it.

“People need to intervene and make it safe for everyone and minimise the harm.”

Josh has his fi nger nail painted bright pink, as was suggested by his daughter Ellie.

“I have had a couple of dif-ferent colours, and then was looking for a third so I asked on Facebook and one of my friends suggested I let Ellie pick.

“She has been asking why I am painting my nail, so I have explained to her that some people get hurt by others and

this is the way I am supporting them.”

Ninety percent of all sexual violence is perpetrated by men, the majority takes place behind closed doors by people the victim knows. Josh says if anyone is experi-encing or witnessing violence, it is important to contact the police or crimestoppers of Child Youth and Family on 0508326459.

The popular Dowse Ice Rink is attracting more than 1000 people every day.

Hutt City Council’s Event Manager Carla Steed says the ice rink is the largest event the council will put on this year and has been delighted with the response from the community.

“Our objective was to cre-ate an event that ran over a long period of time, that offered maximum participa-tion for our community and wasn’t dependent on the fi ckle weather we often have in spring.

“Council intentionally kept ticket prices much lower

than other rinks around the country to ensure as many people as possible could try their hand at ice skating.”

Carla says that the central city location of the rink is also adding to the high number of attendees.

Many families enjoyed the superhero and professionals frozen parties during the fi rst week, which gave chil-dren a chance to meet some of their favourite movie characters, she says.

Both these events will run again, among other events including an Ice Date night, later this month. The rink is open seven days a week and runs until Monday October 26.

A local Border Collie has become the fi rst dog in the Wellington region to undergo a new surgery.

Nine-year-old Molly underwent Modified Maquet Procedure (MMP), which has been introduced in an effort to treat one of the most common orthopedic injuries in dogs.

It has only recently been intro-duced into the country.

CareVets veterinarian Dr Ivan Aleksic says MMP is designed to treat dogs that have injured an important ligament in their knee, known as the cranial cruciate liga-ment.

“Think of this injury as similar to a human tearing their ACL. A

ruptured cranial cruciate ligament in a dog is the major cause of rear-leg lameness and arthritis of the knee joint.

“Hundreds of dogs nationwide, like Molly, battle with this injury every year and many can barely walk be-cause of it. Now New Zealand has joined countries across the world to offer the latest surgery.”

Dr Aleksic says MMP is much superior to alternative existing surgeries as it is less invasive.

“The most common surgery in New Zealand for this type of injury has been the lateral suture technique, which involves opening the joint and often cutting the knee’s meniscus.”

With the MMP technique, the affected joint is not routinely opened

unless lameness persists long after surgery.

“Basically this means there is much less discomfort and a quicker recovery time for the dog in most cases,” he says.

Dr Aleksic says the surgery is an option even if the injury is a long standing one.

“MMP can be used to treat dogs who have just recently injured their ligament, or dogs with long standing ligament injuries. However new injuries respond better.

“The key is to seek treatment sooner rather than later, as the likelihood of success is higher for ‘new’ injuries.”

The procedure is currently being offered across CareVets nationwide.

Being on a large faultline, it is only a matter of time before Wellington gets hit by a big earthquake.

This Thursday, Kiwis are encouraged to take part in ShakeOut – a national earth-quake drill.

Mayor Ray Wallace is en-couraging local businesses, schools and organisations to get in behind the drill.

“We are known as the shaky isles for a reason so it’s important we know what to do when an earthquake happens.

“ShakeOut is a fantastic op-portunity to practice ‘Drop, Cover, Hold’ – the right

action to take during an earthquake,” he says.

ShakeOut will happen to-morrow at 9.15am.

“Council staff are also go-ing to be taking part and visitors to council facilities during ShakeOut will be encouraged to do the same.

Organisers are hoping for 1.5 million participants, making it the largest Shake-Out drill in the world per capita.

To register for ShakeOut, or for more information visit www.shakeout.govt.nz.

The Wainuiomata News would like to apologise to Leah Clark for the incorrect spelling of her name in last week’s front page story about smokefree cars.

Leah Clark does not work for the Hutt City District Health Board, she works for Wellington Regional Public Health.

Te Puea Morgan, from Kokiri

Marae Health and Social Ser-vices was also involved in the initiative. We apologise for not including her in last week’s story.

The pair also wished to add the survey and petition was to gain signatures in support of a ban against smoking in cars with children under the age of 18.

Safer Boating Week is to remind and encourage boaties about being safe on the water.

Prep your boat – have the engine serviced, remember the battery, give the boat a good all over check

Check your gear – make sure your lifejackets are in good condition and children’s lifejackets still fit. If you have inflatables it’s a good time to service them, check expiry dates on fire extinguishers and flares

Know the rules – know the give way rules, carry lifejackets on all vessels and wear them on vessels under 6 meter, obey the 5 knot rule and always travel at a safe speed.

In Wellington we have rapidly changing weather so checking the forecast and watching for changes while are on the water are also import.

There is more information on www.saferboating.org.nz including links to videos on correctly fitting lifejackets and how to service inflatable jackets.

Enjoy your summer boating safely

For information, a boating safety pack or any other enquires about safety on the region’s waters contact us, office hours 04 830 4160 or email [email protected]

A local man, who has re-cently turned his life around, is cooking up a storm in an effort to raise enough money for Mila Gardner to get her much needed surgery.

Eruera Amentiers Tuhoro is cooking and selling Cook Island style Hangi, and all the proceeds will go to the Gardner family.

Earlier this year the Wai-nuiomata News reported that Mila suffers from spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy. This causes Mila’s body to stiffen when she gets excited or emotional.

She cannot suck her thumb and her eating is affected.

To help resolve this issue, parents Melanie and Nathan Gardner have been raising money to fl y their daughter to America for surgery which has proved to help children suffering with cerebral palsy.

The surgery costs $100,000, and with the help of the com-munity the family has almost reached their goal.

When Eruera saw the fami-lies plight he decided to get involved and help out where he could.

“After a rough patch, de-pression hit me hard, I want-ed to turn my life around and all I want to do is positive things for the public,” he says.

He has now been selling hangi for a couple of weeks.

In one day alone Eruera raised $200 for the cause, something that was greatly appreciated by the family.

Last weekend the qualifi ed chef sold his Hangi at the Life City Church Market, raising even more money.

He credits Life City Church with helping turn his life around and says he now spends his time becoming a good role model to his four children and help those less fortunate than himself.

“I want to spread the strong message around the world of peace, love and harmony, for our children to love their parents and respect their elders.”

LETTERS to the editor

Dear Ed, I would like to say congratula-tions to all involved with the new bridge at the top of the hill. It’s great to see the council getting behind such projects. The bridge and the mountain bike park are awesome assets for the community, and as a rate payer, I am more than happy to see some of my rates used in this way. Well Done.

David Blake, Parkway

Happy Rate PayerMental Health awareness has been and

gone but what we should not celebrate is that statistics are up for suicide. The police are being dumped with problems they should not be.

Within the mainstream there is no accommodation and lack of resources for many with changing behaviour.

New Zealand women have lead the way in that they have the ability to discuss

depression but men need the ability to discuss anxiety or stress.

Anxiety is desire or concern to do something or for something to happen.

What I have explained to you is people with Autism are Hyposensitive and need be fun of as this trigger a meltdown.

Also there are people who label people that have impairments as animals.

People with impairments have Human

Rights not animal rights and I would like to acknowledge the community police in Wainuiomata and the Wainuiomata News for having empathy helping to bring understanding, especially when it comes to Meltdowns.

They are making diversity work in our community

Mike Grigg, Wainuiomata

We should talk about anxiety

Residents of Lower Hutt are being asked for their views on the arts and culture in their community

Council is reviewing its policy in the arts and culture area and seeking input from residents, initially with a survey and a series of workshops. These views will help to inform the draft policy, which will then go out again for public comment.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace says, “People feeling engaged with and enjoying the arts and culture around them is at the very heart of meaningful community art.”

“I believe good public art and strong community arts and culture greatly enhances Lower Hutt- adding to our identity and making this a more inspiring place to live. I really encourage people to get involved in this process.”

Examples of public art and com-munity arts and culture funded by Council include public art works such as the iconic Elevating Worms

sculpture marking the entrance to Stokes Valley, and the artesian water fountain Te Puna Wai Ora in Petone.

Council has a Community Arts and Culture Fund, which provides con-testable funding for community art organisations such as the Hutt City Brass Band and Arohanui Strings.

Council also provides funding and other support for community art events such as the bi-annual Shapeshifter sculpture show in Rid-diford Gardens.

Pippa Sanderson, Community Arts and Culture Advisor, says, “Council is doing this survey to ask our com-munities whether and how Council should support arts and culture in Lower Hutt.

“We are also planning to run workshops later in October to have discussion about this.”

The Wainuiomata Community Patrol is continuing their fundraising drive, in order to keep them on the road.

The patrol has been struggling to keep run-ning in recent times and has now turned to the community for help.

The groups latest venture was running a very popular sausage sizzle at the Homedale Village Markets last weekend.

The entire patrol was cooking up a storm bringing in some much needed dollars.

Patrol member Paul Knox says the fund-

raising is going well, but they need more to guarantee they keep running.

“We had enough money to pay the bills last month, but not much more than that,” he says.

“We need all the help we can, the cost of maintaining the car is the biggest expense for us.”

During the year the patrol has received many donations from local businesses, including the Fitzroy Tavern, Clive’s Chemist, Expressions Hair Design, Firestone and Dominos.

Most nights the patrol is on the streets of Wainuiomata, essentially being the eyes and ears of the police, who cannot be everywhere.

Fundraising continues for community patrol

Once again Wainuiomata got prehistoric as GNS Science bought some fossils to the library.Part of the show included the chance for chil-dren to make their own fossils out of plaster.Luca Van Etten was one of the many children at the library, who took the chance to make a copy of a shell fossil. This was part of the GNS Science and Hutt City Councils holiday programme, bringing science into the library where it is easily accessible to the public. The week before there was a show explaining all about dinosaurs. Both shows at the Library were well attended.

Heads will be shaved as Eddy’s Bar gets into pink October.

October is Breast Cancer Month and The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation is challenging kiwis to take action against breast cancer by helping to raise funds for awareness and education programmes, potentially lifesaving research, medical equipment and services to support women suffering from the disease.

This Saturday Eddy’s will host a pink October night, to raise funds for Breast Cancer New Zealand.

As part of the night, two staff will be shaving their heads to raise money and are looking for more sponsorship.

If you want to donate one of the girls that are shaving their head, there are forms at the bar and at the community centre.

The night will begin at 8.30pm and is a gold coin donation to get inside, there will also be a silent auction, and bar staff will be selling off donated prizes.

Managers Barbz and Tanya both say it should be a fun night and are encouraging everyone to get involved.

“If anyone wants to get sponsored to get their head shaved, they are more than welcome, we have a fully professional hairdresser shaving the heads.” says Barbz.

Although this is the fi rst time Eddy’s has run such an event, Tanya says that she had always wanted to show her support in the past, but always backed out of the head shave.

“When I got sponsored, that confi rmed that I have to do it this year, hair grows back eventually, it will be fi ne,” she says.

Sports with Aaron Meredith

Lately the Wainuiomata News has been fielding many letters about various topics, the bridge, disabled parks, but what is striking a chord with me, particu-larly with this column, is the call for more backing for sports clubs in the valley. What all of these letters have been saying is that if we have so much talent over here, how far could they go if they had some real backing behind them. Some of the talent that the youth in the valley have is incredible, it doesn’t matter which sport it is, we have champions and national reps.We have top darts players, we have top boxers, we have top poker players, top hockey players and I haven’t even started on the rugby or the league talent we have here.I know there is the plan for sportsville to come into the valley and bring a more collaborative approach to everything involved in community sports. This is good, to a point, but when is this happening? and how do we not know that the big three clubs, league, union and football won’t get everything and the smaller clubs nothing? What we need to see over here is recogni-tion by those who control the money, recognition that Wainuiomata is the nest producer of sporting talent in the Wellington region and back that talent.Help the hockey club get a proper train-ing area in Wainuiomata, help the boxing club set up a world class gym, if you help the clubs they will help the community. The clubs do not only just represent Wainuiomata, they give locals a chance to keep t, keep healthy, they give everyone a chance to build friendships, build a greater community spirit. The only way for anything to truly hap-pen over here though starts with the clubs, they need to show that they can work with each other, and not scrap with each other. The league club and the union club need to work together and not fight over everything, those old heads that can’t get along need to move on.If we had those clubs working with each other, sharing resources or knowledge we could be unstoppable.Sportsville is a great idea, and is work-ing over the hill at Fraser Park, but we cannot wait 10 years for this to happen, our sports people need something to happen now, our community wants something to happen now.

The community wants it, why can’t we have it?

By Aaron Meredith

The Wainuiomata presidents grade side started off their season with a high scoring victory on Saturday.

Playing in perfect conditions at Wise Park, Wainuiomata were always just one step ahead of the visitors, Naenae Railways, winning 9-7.

Both sides started the game by scor-ing in the fi rst innings, and this trend continued throughout the game.

Next week Wainuiomata are once again at home, this time playing the Hutt Valley Giants.

First pitch is scheduled for 3.15pm at

Wise Park. The womens side started off the sea-

son in dominating fashion, destroying Hutt City United 24-6.

Once again the team is playing over the hill next week, a 1.15pm fi rst pitch is scheduled at JMM when the team lines up against Stokes Valley Red.

In other games the Wainuiomata Premier Three team is scheduled to play against Newlands at Wise Park on Saturday as well.

The Wainuiomata Under 15’s and Under 13’s are both playing the Hutt Valley Giants at South Park with a 10.30am start.

In the Under 11 grade both teams are playing over the hill.

Wainuiomata Black is at Taita Drive against Totara Park, Wainuiomata Green plays Stokes Valley Gold at JMM, with both games at 9am.

The Three Under 9 sides are all at JMM at 10.30am. The Cubs are play-ing the Stokes Valley Red Dragons, the Bears are playing Totara Park Blue and the Lions are playing the Te Aroha Girls.

The Wainuiomata Under 7’s are also at JMM, facing Stokes Valley Red at 9am, while the Under 5’s are at Ball Park against Totara Park Blue at 9.30am.

Starting the season with a win

Free entertainment and sports activities are being lined up for the Taita community to celebrate the opening of their new Walter Nash Centre in style.

The opening of the new pur-pose-built, stand-alone centre in Taine Street is on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October.

Centre Manager Lesley Slieker says her team has gone all-out

to get a whole range of free activities so there is something for everyone.

“For sportspeople there are loads of demonstrations and the chance to have a go at a few things that aren’t usually on offer, such as bumper ball, cage soccer, volleyball and bubble soccer.

“Kids are a big part of this

celebration and the teams at Taita Library and The Dowse have come up with some exciting ideas for kids to get involved with, along with favourites like face painting and storytelling.

“Anyone who just wants to come along and have a good time will enjoy the live music and a chance to meet the Mai FM team, who’ll be at the new centre

on Saturday. There’ll be the X-Box Sports Expo on Sunday and at lunchtime on both days there’s a chance to have a chat with local councillors, who are cooking up a free sausage sizzle.”

Lesley says as word gets around the community about the Centre she is finding that people are “buzzing” about being able to do a lot of things at the one stop.

“Bookings are already coming in, with the fi tness suite and its state-of-the-art gym equipment proving to be a big attraction. As well as the great sports facilities there are meeting spaces avail-able for community groups, there’s the library, a café, and another big draw is the free Wi-Fi.”

Free events lined up for Walter Nash Centre celebration
