Welcome to the9th Annual

Wagner CharolaisBull Sale

We are pleased to welcome you to our 9th saleand the first sale we are having at our ranch.

We calve exclusively in the Fall, so our bulls are18 – 20 months old. The bulls in our sale comefrom a strong base of easy doing cows. Calvingease is a high priority for us. Our bulls are born onpasture, raised on pasture and are being sold offpasture. They never see a feedlot. They walk totheir food and, as a result, are in good shape, have good feet and legs and can cover cows inthe roughest pastures.

Our feed program is pasture and hay which wesupplement with cake and flaked corn. We thinkthis year's bulls are among the most uniform andbest conditioned that we have ever offered.

We pride ourselves on having docile bulls, whichis the result of both selection and management.Working the bulls from the time they are youngcalves with our dogs really helps make them easyto handle.

Our program owes a lot to Dennis Metzger, ourauctioneer, who helped us assemble our originalherd and who continues to provide help andguidance. We also want to thank Clint Kaufmanand Chris Probst for keeping things running on theranch.

We hope you enjoy the sale and find the perfectbulls for your operation. There are bulls in the salefor every need, including high performance withcalving ease. At this point in the cattle cycle,Charolais bulls are real money makers and offergreat muscling, rate of gain, feed efficiency andhybrid vigor in their calves.

Thanks for being a part of our sale.

EPD INFOBirth Weight (BW)

The expected difference in average birth weight (pounds) of progeny. Birth weight reflectsprenatal growth, but is greatly affected by enviromental conditions.

Calving Ease Direct (CE)Calving Ease is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births in first calfheifers. A higher value indicates greater calving ease. It predicts the average difference inunassisted births with which a sire's calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers.

Calving Ease Maternal (MCE)Calving Ease Maternal is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births in firstcalf daughters. A higher value indicates greater calving ease. It predicts the average differencein unassisted births with which a sire's daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when comparedto daughters of other sires.

Weaning Weight (WW)The expected difference in average weaning weight of calves. The evaluation reflects thegenetic influence onpre-weaning growth rate. Weaning weights shown are adjusted to 205days.

Yearling Weight (YW)The expected difference in average yearling weight of progeny. The evaluation reflects geneticinfluence on both pre-weaning and post-weaning growth rate. Yearling weights shown areadjusted to 365 days.

Maternal Milk (M)The genetic ability of a sire’s or dam’s daughters to express in pounds of weaning weight inher calves due to her maternal ability through mothering instinct and milk.

Terminal Sire Index (TSI)Terminal Sire Index (TSI) is a method of combining Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) –BWT, WWT, YWT, REA, HCW, MARB and FAT – into one single value. The TSI represents adollar index per terminal progeny produced for a bull. For example, if Sire A’s index is $171.66and Sire B’s index is $180.00, then we would expect Sire B’s offspring to average $8.34 morenet return ($180.00 minus $171.66) than Sire A’s offspring.

SUMMARY: BW - small is good. All others - big is good.

This symbol means that the bull has been genomically tested (50K) and, therefore, itsEPDs are “genomically enhanced.” What this means to you as a breeder is not thatthe EPDs are “better,” but that the EPDs are more accurate and, therefore, morereliable.

BORDER COLLIESWe make extensive use of well trained Border Collies to work our cattle. The dogs can gather and move cattle withminimal stress, bring them to the corrals without upsetting them and help sort them gently and calmly. They are a keypart of our low stress handling system.

We breed, train and trial (cattledog trials) our dogs and are founding members of the National Cattledog Association. Ourtop dogs right now are Ike and Zoe (Jan's dogs) and Slik, Zig and Slink (Bob's dogs). All are qualified for the 2020 NCANational Finals, which will again be held in Cheyenne, WY.

We would enjoy showing you how we train and use our dogs and might have a dog for you. There are often dogs at theranch available for sale, most often started dogs. Visit our website: wagnerbordercollies.com.

This year we will be putting on a little dog demo before the sale. It should start around noon. Come watch Slik, Zoe andtheir kennel mates and get to know the dogs.
