Its main functions are to: » provide a safe, economical and durable all-weather surface » minimise the rate of pavement wear and maintenance costs » reduce moisture seeping into the pavement. Open grade asphalt will be used to surface the Ipswich Motorway and Centenary Highway. Asphalt is a mixture of bitumen, stone chips and filler and is used where traffic volumes are high. Wacol to Darra

Road surface

The road surface is the top layer of the

pavement structure. Its main functions

are to:

» provide a safe, economical and

durable all-weather surface

» minimise the rate of pavement wear

and maintenance costs

» reduce moisture seeping into

the pavement.

Open grade asphalt will be used to

surface the Ipswich Motorway and

Centenary Highway. Asphalt is a mixture

of bitumen, stone chips and filler and is

used where traffic volumes are high.

Characteristics of open grade

asphalt include:

» manufactured with a large proportion

of coarse stone chips

» contains more air voids than dense

grade asphalt and is porous by design

» greater air voids result in lower

tyre noise and reduced water

spray for improved visibility and

skid resistance.

Roads for the futureThe Department of Main Roads has established SAFElink Alliance to deliver the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade from Wacol to Darra. Construction is underway and is due for completion in December 2010.

Road design

The following factors are considered

when designing new roads:

» drainage design – storm water runoff

» roadside design – median strips,

roadway lighting, pedestrian facilities,

landscaping and noise barriers

New road surfacing will mean reduced noise and water spray.

» geotechnical design – earthworks and construction materials

» intersections, interchanges and rail crossing design

» geometric design – adequate cross sections, sight distances and traffic safety

» environmental issues and constraints.

Road types

Various roads will be upgraded or redesigned as part of the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade between Wacol and Darra.

The types of roads being upgraded include:

» Local roads: Some work will occur on local roads in the project area. These roads are relatively free of through traffic and mostly cater for local trips.

» Service roads: Service roads are the roads that connect communities to the major sub-arterial and arterial roads. To improve safety, some existing on and off ramps connecting to service roads will be removed from the Centenary Highway Interchange as part of the upgrade. Motorists are required to use service interchanges to access their local road network for shorter trips within the area.

» Sub-arterial and arterial roads: These roads include highways, freeways and motorways. As part of the upgrade, the Ipswich Motorway and Centenary Highway will be widened to six lanes, with provision for eight lanes in the future. These additional lanes will provide an economical and practical method of reducing traffic queues and improving traffic flow.

Widening the Ipswich Motorway will improve traffic flow.

Building roads

There are three main stages in building a road.

Planning: Considerations during the planning stage included the cost, amount of land needed and the effects the road will have on the community and business.

Design development: SAFElink Alliance has developed the detailed design taking into consideration traffic volumes, the type of road and the landscape.

Construction: Service relocation including gas, electricity, telecommunications, water and sewer pipes began in 2007. Construction began in early March 2008. The first stage of construction of any road involves clearing any buildings and vegetation within the project boundary.

Please remember that safety around roadworks is a two-way street. We ask that you drive carefully and responsibly during these construction works.
