Chinese Taipei never recovered and the game was won 17-4. The eastern states defence unit was impressive, generating blocks with ease. Day 3 saw more easy victories against Hong Kong and Singapore, and also saw Australia gaining ground on the runaway Japanese who had been demolishing all the other teams. Points were traded up until 12-12, when the Japanese forced two breaks and finished with an 18-14 victory. We were confident that on the final day, playing in the World Games Stadium we could take it to the Japanese and come away with a win. Playing the final was an amazing experience. Each team had their own full changing area, there was an indoor running track used for warm up and the size of the stadium was mighty impressive. Sadly, the Aussies weren’t quite as polished as we’d been on Day 2 & 3 and Japan capitalised early jumping out with a few early breaks. We could never quite claw back the lead despite some promising plays mid game. Japan won 18 -11 and finished the week undefeated. The players from WA were still very proud to walk away from it all with a WFDF Silver Medal and know that they gave it everything over the 4 days.

At the recent Asia Oceanic Ultimate Championships (AOUC) held in Kaohsiung, WA

was well represented by Anna Haynes, Minh Hyunh, Jason Carr and Glen “Chook”

Fowles that were selected to play for the Australian team. The team arrived at their

luxurious hotel, which had an endless supply of free ice cream at the lobby. The WA

players quickly bonded with their new teammates from across Australia and began to

discuss the week ahead. The games were to be played at 3 different stadiums across

the city, including the newly built World Games Stadium, which had recently been

voted the best stadium in the world. The Aussies were thrown right into the action

playing the tournament favourites Japan in their first match. The WA players were all

put on offence together and started to show their form early combining for some

great goals. Japan were a strong team and came away with the victory, but a double

round robin format meant the Aussies would meet them again to try and claim some

revenge. The local team from Chinese Taipei were up next, with an impressive roster

size of more than 25 players, and a loud vocal sideline to match. They put in a strong

performance against the Aussies, who were still trying to gel after only playing one

game together and came out with a 12-10 victory. This was a minor setback and it

meant the Aussies would have to win by 3 or more next time we played them. After

the end of day 1, the WA players were doing well. Jason was using his height and

speed to out cut his smaller opponents allowing Anna and Chook to hit him downfield

with their precision passes. The Aussies lost count of the number of layouts Minh had

done on day 1 and she was catching everything thrown her way.

Some easy victories against Hong Kong and Singapore, gave the Aussies

confidence to take into their final game on Day 2, which was also a rematch against

the Chinese Taipei team. A victory for the Aussies by two or more would see them

through the final against Japan. We came out firing and went on a run of seven or so

points before the locals had even known what hit them. Chinese Taipei never

recovered and the game was won 17-4. The eastern states defence unit was

impressive, generating blocks with ease. Day 3 saw more easy victories against

Hong Kong and Singapore, and also saw Australia gaining ground on the runaway

Japanese who had been demolishing all the other teams. Points were traded up until

12-12, when the Japanese forced two breaks and finished with an 18-14 victory. We

take it to the Japanese and come away with a win.

Playing the final was an amazing experience. Each team had their own full changing area, there was an indoor running track used for warm up and the size of the stadium was mighty impressive. Andrew Hutcheon

Looking back at the end of 2011, the activity level for Ultimate in Perth reminded me of only a handful of times in the past decade. For virtually every weekend between mid-October and the early December there was something happening. I was also busy working with Steve Baker and the southern teams to establish the new South of Perth Ultimate League on Wednesday nights. Seeing so many new faces, rushing around doing lots of admin work and such, and playing up to 5 days a week sent me back to at least the time around World Clubs in 2006. For Ultimate in WA to be returning to that level of interest in the community, and for players to have so many options – even if it just for a short time – is a really great sign for the sport. Hopefully we can keep it up! At any rate, this is a quick recap of some of these activities:

Finding a home for WA Ultimate

Though it’s one of those behind the scenes things that players often don't get to see, October 2011 saw WA Ultimate sign a deal with Murdoch University to acquire office and storage space. Previously our intrepid development officer Anna Haynes was working out of her bedroom and having to trek to Osborne Park (often from Mandurah) to pick up equipment for weekends or leagues. Now, Anna can reclaim some work/life separation, and our administration and storage facilities are combined. This additionally gives us the start of a working relationship with other aspects of the University, such the Exercise Physiology, Chiropractic and Education departments, and the new WACA-curated playing fields.

WA at Mixed Nationals

I believe you'll hear more about this elsewhere, but there was some big news out of Mixed Nationals in Melbourne in October. Firstly, two teams – Word Art and Happy Pig – attended, a first for WA at Mixed Nationals. Second, Happy Pig came home with the Spirit Award! As a part of that Pig team, I was really happy to come home with a medal, and proud that a WA team is seen as the most well spirited in the nation. As for games themselves, the teams headed in opposite directions, with Happy Pig winning early vs. SOMA (ACT) and Log! (TAS), before dropping the re-pool games and then posting late wins for 19th. Word Art got stuck in a really difficult pool, before winning through the re-pool and a couple of other later games to finish 13th. I think both teams put everything they had onto the field (and the dance floor), and have done WA proud – well done to both teams. Still, it looks like there is a lot of room for WA teams to climb the standings as Mixed Nationals comes to Perth in 2012.

New South League

As mentioned earlier, I've been involved with helping establish the new SPUL at Beeliar Oval on Wednesday nights. With PUL reaching capacity over the last couple of seasons WAFDA decided the best way to simultaneously reclaim field capacity at PUL and continue growing the game in WA was to branch out into the southern suburbs with a sister league. Though it is in some ways sad that we might not all meet up weekly like we (and by we, I'm probably just referring to some of us older players) used to, we cannot be serious about bringing Ultimate to more people without also developing more opportunities in new areas to play. So far, it's been a bit of struggle week-to-week with numbers, but slowly the league has become more established, more new faces keep appearing and the level of play is beginning to rise. Overall, it's been really great to be involved with this new league.

Other Bits

We’ve had Brodie Smith and the biggest Witch’s Hat ever - hats off to Sam Cleary and the Ninjas club and finally, there was a Bunbury vs. Mandurah club game was held on January 22. Congrats to both clubs on organising their first interclub game.

Keep an eye out for the official article on www.waultimate.com. Broome residents

are keen to host a hat tournament on 11-12 August this year. Be on the watch for

cheap flights. Ultimate on the beach...IN BROOME. In order for the tournament to

go ahead there needs to be 10 non-Broome residents confirmed to attend. This is

an ideal time to escape the cold Perth winter and support regional development.

AMUC 2011- WordArt

The newly formed team WordArt headed over to Melbourne for Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships full of energy,

ready to have some fun and excited about the weekend ahead. The roster was a combination of some senior Perth

Ultimate players as well as some fresh new faces playing their first national championships. We were confident of two

things, we’d beat our seed of 24th (from 24 teams) and that our uniforms would be the best at the tournament.

WordArt struggled for victories in their difficult pool on the first day of competition losing their three games. This was

attributed to the short time team members played together as part of a team. We put together some good plays, started

to understand each other and were confident we could back it up the next day. Day 2 saw us come out flying, racing to

a large lead over Townsville and holding on to secure our first victory. At the end of pool play we were in a 3 way tie to

see which team advances and we scraped through on points difference. WordArt refuelled at lunch and then we were

off to our next match against John Doe from Queensland. Going in as underdogs to the match, with tired legs from 5

games and some layout practise WordArt stood tall and prevailed. Our disappointments from day 1 were erased, we

were now full of confidence and ready to face even tougher opponents. The final game on a long day 2 was against

Burley Griffiths from Canberra. Certain WordArt players were keen to impress some selectors on the sidelines and put

in a huge effort, with the rest of the team backing them up with another solid performance. The guys and gals from

Canberra proved to be just a little too strong winning 12-10. Not bad against a team seeded 18 places above us.

After an epic showing at the nationals party where we were dressed amazingly in our Airport themed attire and seen partying well into the night, WordArt did the unthinkable. We won all our games on the final day, normally a rare feat for WA teams known to suffer from exhaustion. We entered the tournament with the 24th seed and came out with 13th, something to be proud of. WordArt and it’s amazing uniforms are hoping to be back for AMUC 2012 in Perth, be sure to keep an eye out for us!

The Witch’s Hat - 2011

Article: Sam Cleary

The Witch's Hat 2011, hosted by Ninjas Ultimate Club, was the WAFDA Tournament of the Year.

Held at the Sir Charles Court Reserve on the Nedlands foreshore, over 100 people participated in the tournament on the weekend of the 29 and 30 October. Eight brightly coloured teams, in brand new

Witch's Hat logo-ed Zone tournament shirts, competed in perfect spring conditions.

Each day started with a number of spirit games to set the scene for the fun atmosphere promoted at the event. Given the Halloween theme, each team was provided with the challenge of carving the best pumpkin, some of them actually turning out quite impressively. The tournament games were thrown into havoc with the Witch's Hat point resulting in swapping of scores throughout the game.

No team was safe and any team could win at any point during the game. As the saying goes, it's isn’t over till the fat lady sings! The White and Pink teams competed in an intense final with White narrowly taking out bragging rights for a year. Pink were the winners of the spirit award. The tournament was capped off with the Halloween themed tournament party held at the Nedlands Yacht Club with the beautiful city lights of Perth as the backdrop to a brilliant weekend.

In September we took another step forward as an

organisation and moved into an office. WA Ultimate

now has a head office located within the Sport and

Recreation Office at Murdoch University. This

location is now the home of Ultimate here in WA and

provides not only a storage facility for the

Association’s equipment but provides a professional

home base for daily operations.

Since my last update, 87 in-school sessions have

been delivered with the assistance of Andrew

Hutcheon, Steve Baker, Kyal Oh, Simone Ryan and

Andrew Jennings. We have been able to service all

sessions booked providing greater coverage than

ever before.

A few highlights include; WA now having 52

accredited coaches, selling discs to Jack Black, the

Associated and Catholic Colleges have now increased

their interschool Ultimate competition to 2 of their

zones (involving 8 high schools) and Slater-Gartrell

continue to stock and distribute WA Ultimate Ultra-star

discs, and a new club has formed in the Peel region.

Thanks to Silver Naumoska the Mandurah Mozzies

are now set up in Mandurah and training weekly.

In October along with Kyal Oh and Andrew Jennings

we travelled down to Bunbury to run a Development

Day for the south west club. A full day was dedicated

to throwing, throwing extensions, offense and defense

tactics and other disc based games to help support

and develop the Bunbury players.

In November the national administrators conference

for the Australian Flying Disc Association was held in

Canberra last year and was attended by Kyal Oh and

I. The weekend was dedicated to sharing best

practices, discussing current issues and planning for

the year to come in relation to Ultimate in Australia.

Later in November I was invited to present at the

Department of Sport and Recreation’s 2012 State

Clubs Conference in Fremantle. Over 200 delegates

from the sport and recreation industry attended this

event and my presentation was for the area of

Volunteer Management. Entitled REAP what you

sow with volunteers. I conducted an interactive

workshop with over 30 delegates using the volunteer

management program REAP; Recruit, Educate,

Acknowledge, Preserve. The 4 keys areas to taking

care of your volunteers. I received great feedback and

networked with many key members of the industry

whilst flying the flag for flying disc sports. I have since

run similar workshops for the Shire of Chittering, the

City of Canning and the Cities of Bayswater & Swan.

This provided a great opportunity to share the success

and innovation WAFDA as an organization, has to

offer the WA sport and recreation industry.

Recently I went to Belridge Senior High School for a

teacher professional development day. On this day I

ran three sessions for school teachers looking to learn

more about Ultimate and how to get the sport in their

school. Thirty teachers attended these sessions and it

was great to see so many new faces having fun with a

disc.

I now have an official WA Development Officer

Facebook Page. This page is set up to better

communicate my activities I carry out for the

Association and also separate my personal account

from my work account. If you need to contact me or

2011 WAFDA Awards

It is time once again to honour Australia's greatest contributors to disc sport - the prestigious Rob Hancock Award is now open for nominations!

In short, the Rob Hancock Award, named in posthumous honour of one of the AFDA's founding fathers and early national champion in many flying disc disciplines, is awarded each year to the select few people most deserving of recognition for their contributions on and off the field consistently and with the highest standards of execution. The Award is our most prestigious form of recognition, and, in a sport where, thanks to self-refereeing and the Spirit of the Game, means we're all contributing all the time, to receive it is really something very, very special.

Nominations should be forwarded to myself or a member of the AFDA Board no later than Friday 6th April

2012, to enable the award to be presented at Nationals 2012.

High Performance Update

At present, WA is being very well represented on the high performance scene. WA sends teams to the

Australian Ultimate Championships each April and the Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships each

October has provided a solid development pathway for those wishing to play Ultimate at a higher level. Last

year we had 11 players named on the All Australian senior squads. Four junior players went to New Zealand

for the first Trans-Tasman series and 4 WA members went to Taiwan for the Asian Oceanic Ultimate

Championships. For the 2012 World Ultimate and Guts Championships, 4 WA representatives have made the

Australian teams and will travel to Japan for the event. Paul Denyer will play in the Open division for the

Dingos, John Damiani and Kendall Thorn will play for the Barramundis in the Mixed division and Danya

Meakins will play for the Australian Women’s team; the Firetails. There are 10 WA juniors named on the

current U19 Australian squad lists with those selected travelling to Ireland in August for the World Junior

Ultimate Championships. For the first time ever there will be a Women’s master division at this years World

championships and there are 4 WA women trying out for this team. This is an exciting time for high

performance Ultimate here in WA and we look forward to seeing the development level strengthen for many

years to come.

The Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships are coming to Perth in October and we want you to be involved!

We are seeking help from the WA Ultimate community in the planning and running of this national event. Any contribution is valuable to ensuring a great event and there are many ways in which you can assist. A venue and a non-playing Tournament Director has been secured all we need now is a Tournament Organising Committee.

We need immediate help in these areas:

• Catering • Accommodation • Transport • Event Logo • Event Website • Merchandise • Player services - first aid, massage & physio

There is even fundraising opportunities for your Club, team or yourself!

To find out more about what is needed and what perks you can expect please email the WA Ultimate

Development Officer today via [email protected].

PRIMAL Ultimate Club Receives Special Commendation

At the recent Industry Sport and Recreation Awards evening hosted by the Department of Sport and Recreation PRIMAL Ultimate Club was awarded a special commendation award for the club’s innovative use of technology; namely social media integration.

This event was held on 25th November 2011 at Challenge Stadium. PRIMAL was a finalist, the club up against three big state sporting associations which is a massive achievement in itself. The club was happy with being named a finalist but to be the only nominee on the night to receive a special commendation was a complete shock.

PRIMAL Ultimate Club has embraced the use of social media portals in order to

enhance and compliment its communication tools to engage members, promote club

activities and network with clubs and individuals both locally, nationally and

internationally.

Social media allows us to communicate to a wider audience than ever before and we

find it not only useful but enjoyable to involve our members and keep all interested

parties up to date with all aspects of the club.

The impact of social media tools for our club has been a positive one. Volunteers are able to provide quick, relevant updates through easy to use methods. Members can connect to other members online. We now have fans from all over the world that follow and comment on our activities. This gives a great sense of community amongst the members and allows us to network and learn from other clubs around the world.

WA is making a splash on the Youth Ultimate scene! In previous campaigns we have had a total of three WA boys

represent Australia in youth Ultimate World Championship events. This year we have 10 youth members up for

Australian selection for both Open and Women’s teams.

Last year at the National Youth Ultimate Camp, four WA players attended a

camp in Melbourne earning them a spot in the first Australia v New Zealand

series.

This year the 10 youth representatives travelled to Sydney for the first

official selection camp and all were named in the squads for the teams

trying out for a chance to compete at the 2012 World Junior Ultimate

Championships in Ireland in August. Those up for selection include:

The next round of selections is on March 17-18 in Sydney and we wish all our WA super stars the best of luck in their

endeavours.

In November WA Ultimate ran a project with a difference. We invited a well

known international player; Brodie Smith, to travel to Perth and run a series of

development camps to enhance and develop local players skills. Brodie Smith,

who not only has a huge online following through his social media tools such as

trick shots and tips on Everything Ultimate but has also built up a big on-field

presence through his involvement with Florida University Ultimate and club

team Doublewide.

Enthusiastic from the get go, Brodie’s first trip to Australia to Elevate our Game

was action packed for 16 days. The first weekend was a two day development

camp held at UWA Sports Park involving over 60 players. Everything from

throwing techniques, new drills, defence tips and tricks to layout competitions

was all covered over the two days.

During the week clubs were able to book private sessions with Brodie. Sublime,

PRIMAL, UWA and Ninjas all took advantage of this opportunity to work with

Brodie during his visit.

The second weekend was dedicated to high performance and coach development. This event was held at

Murdoch University and Brodie took skill development to the next level, challenging players to think more

strategically in their approach to the game.

BUFF 2012

This year FEAR's annual BUFF tournament had a slightly modified format, changing from 'Beach Ultimate

Furious Fives' to become 'Beach Ultimate Fabulous Fours'. Feedback from players who competed at Bay of

Pigs indicated that the 2+2+subs instead of 3+2+no subs was a better format. We decided to try it out and the

response was fantastic - 112 players across 15 teams, making the fifth BUFF the biggest yet.

Teams were seeded into four pools by a semi-random / semi-guesswork method, then each pool played a

round-robin round. The format is designed to allow teams to play a game, then rest for a game, allowing players

to rest and rehydrate, even take a quick dip in the ocean which is conveniently placed right next to the beach.

Results for the round-robin went pretty much as seeded, as is typical with this type of seeding there were a few

blowouts but also a good number of nail-biters. Fortunately the weather was pleasantly warm but not stiflingly

hot, and the wind was strong enough to make things interesting but not strong

enough to become ridiculous.

After the round-robin was the Champion of the Universe Dreamer Flag Race, a

race similar in general format to the flag races held at surf clubs around the

country. Instead of bits of rubber hose that the surf clubs use, CotUDFR

competitors run and dive for a 'Dreamer', a small lightweight disc which can also

be used for teaching primary school children how to throw a flick.

The CotUDFR is always a highlight of BUFF, with competitors running and diving for Dreamers in front of a

large, cheering, supportive crowd. This year was no different, with excitement building with every heat as we

searched for this years Champion. Both the Women's and Men's finals were incredibly close, with Casey

Meakins edging out Rachel Deluca-Cardillo for the women's title, and Kyal Oh scraping in front of Peter Rice to

win the Men's.

After the flag race was the quarter finals. After the round-robin,

the top two teams from each pool had moved into the top-8,

and the other teams into the bottom-7. These groups then

went to quarters/semis/finals to determine final placings.

Progressing through this process saw games get tighter as

each team met others closer to their own level, so most of the

semis were determined by 1 or 2 points.

The final match saw 'C Munkeez', undefeated all day, win the title over 'Seal Cub Clubbing Club' to become

BUFF V champions.

FEAR thanks our sponsors - Red Spoon supplied 2-for-1 vouchers for all the players as well as 'Double-Scoop'

vouchers for the winning team and second place; and Clancy's Fish Pub in Fremantle provided prizes for the

winners of the Champion of the Universe Dreamer Flag Race.

Thanks too to all the players for supporting the event and helping once again to make it successful, and also

everyone who did anything to help organise and run the event.
