and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after

your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and

reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and

    forever. Amen

    GOD SPEAKS TO US

FIRST READING Genesis 1:1-5 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the

earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the

face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of

the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was

light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated

the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the

darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was

    morning, the first day.

Reader: Word of God, word of life.

    All: Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING Acts 19:4-7 Reader: Paul preached to some disciples in Ephesus: “John

preached a baptism of radical life-change so that people would

be ready to receive the One coming after him, who turned out to

be Jesus. If you’ve been baptized in John’s baptism, you’re ready

  • 5

now for the real thing, for Jesus.” And they were. As soon as they

heard of it, they were baptized in the name of the Master Jesus.

Paul put his hands on their heads and the Holy Spirit entered

them. From that moment on, they were praising God in tongues

and talking about God’s actions. Altogether there were about

    twelve people there that day.

Reader: Word of God, word of life.

    All: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Yours, Lord is the Glory (Verse 4) (pg 10)

GOSPEL Mark 1:4-11 At Jesus’ baptism, Jesus hears the voice of God, receives the Spirit of God,

and is acclaimed Son of God. For Christians, this narrative illumines Christian

baptism, when also believers are adopted as children by the name of the

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Mark includes no birth story in Bethlehem. For

Mark, the beginning of Jesus’ story begins at his baptism.

Pastor: The holy gospel according to Matthew.

All: Glory to you, O Lord.

This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness

and preached that people should be baptized to show that they

had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. All

of Judea, including all the people of Jerusalem, went out to see

and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized

them in the Jordan River. His clothes were woven from coarse

camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food

he ate locusts and wild honey. John announced: “Someone is coming soon who is greater than

I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down

like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals. I baptize you

with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”

One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized

him in the Jordan River. As Jesus came up out of the water, he

saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending

on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my

dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”

Pastor: The gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, O Christ.

    THE MESSAGE Pastor Rob Johnson

HYMN OF THE DAY #574 Here I Am, Lord (pg 11)

    AN OFFERING OF CONFESSION

Pastor: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who was in the

beginning, who makes a dwelling among us, who covers us with

    justice and mercy.

    All: Amen.

Pastor: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of

one another…….God of goodness and lovingkindness,

All: we confess that we have sinned against you

    and our neighbors.

We have turned away from your invitation to new life.

We have turned away from the lowly and downtrodden.

In your abundant mercy, forgive us our sins,

those we know and those known only to you,

for the sake of the one who came to live among us,

    Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Pastor: Hear the good news of forgiveness! Through the waters

of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea

you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the

river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy

Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and

sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We

praise you, God, for new life through the forgiveness of Jesus,

    the anointed Savior.

    ALL: Amen.

APOSTLES’ CREED Pastor: We proclaim what we believe as the people of God!

All: I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven

    and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was

buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose

again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right

hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and

    the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the

communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the

resurrection of the body, and the live everlasting. Amen

THE PRAYER OUR LORD TAUGHT US Pastor: Trusting in God’s amazing grace that sets us free, we

    pray:

All: Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

    Give us this day our daily bread;

    And forgive us our trespasses,

    As we forgive those who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation,

    But deliver us from evil,

For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory forever and ever. Amen

    OFFERING CANTICLE The Doxology

    GOD SENDS US

BLESSING Pastor: God sent the Holy Spirit to give us sight in a world of

darkness. You are sent now so that your light may shine before

others. Signed, sealed, and delivered through the waters of

baptism, may God bless and keep you through the Beloved

    Son, Jesus.

    All: Amen.

Breath of God Breath figures frequently in Scripture. God’s breath or Spirit

hovers over the chaos in creation in Genesis. Breath or Spirit

enters the nostrils of the created in the story. Breath and

Spirit is breathed onto the disciples by Jesus when he

appears to them after his resurrection. In the gospel text, as

Jesus rises from the waters, the Spirit, the breath of God,

descends like a dove. Jesus, having held his breath under

    the water, rises as a

    model of death and life

    for us, breathing in the

life of the Spirit. He is a

    risen and claimed by

    God as the beloved with

    whom God is pleased.

    Of course, breathing is

    two things, breathing in

and breathing out. You can hold your breath, but there is

no way to hold it forever. Consider how this reflects the

Spirit’s power in Jesus and then in our baptism. In

baptism, the gift is not just one of repentance and

forgiveness, but, as the Acts text emphasizes, also

involves the Spirit living and acting in the baptized. While

it is a gift for our own lives, like the gift of breathing in, it is

also encouragement and life, a breathing out of the Spirit

into the world. Baptism is both for our own sake and for

the world. In our baptism, we breathe in forgiveness and

reconciliation and breathe out the Spirit in our life and

works. That’s the full life of the baptized disciple.
