Rushing from beneath the roots of an ancient cedar, the rush of water blocks out the chatter of birds in the forest. Bending, I cup cold, flowing water in my hands. Fresh from Earth’s underground caverns, the water emerges from inner darkness to join with other rivulets along the way, swelling to the Boardman River, hurrying through forested countryside to West Bay, on beyond to Lake Michigan and the Atlantic Ocean. Bent over in this place, holiness welcomes me! Cut away by water’s force, the roots of the old cedar reveal anchors in layers of history. Built, layer upon layer, over centuries, the forest rooted, grew and died building a base for the present. A watershed is a prophet of the future. It flows from the highest point in a biological region to its lowest, from rain drop and storm, to storage caverns, springs, streams, lakes and rivers. All life along the way affects the water. What happens to the water happens to us! Its sacred secrets reflect both past and present. Jesus teaches his disciples in the school-for- following-Jesus that anyone who gives a cup of cold water just for being a disciple gives welcome! Give welcome! To act to “give” or to freely transfer possession of “welcome”. Welcome, as a noun, is hospitality, kindness. generosity and neighborliness? As Jesus calls the disciples to be holy and to live prophetic lives, he teaches them about receiving welcome. Anyone who freely transfers possession of welcome to humble, even misunderstood prophets and holy ones, just because they are holy or prophetic will be rewarded (Mt 10:40-42). Jesus knew that those who live a holy and prophetic life will always be different. If someone gives water from their well, an ancient, foundational, and essential act of welcome, then know the holy is received. Water gives welcome! Ched Myers, (Sojourners, May 2014, p.22), present-day prophet, is requesting “all hands on deck” to “ ‘serve and preserve’ the earth” by re-inhabiting the places where we live. Bend low and cup in hands the closest water to your home. In eqch handful lies a sacred and prophetic story of the most fundamental of human needs. Look at it, feel it freely transfer its essential self, its kindness to your hands, to your cup and body. Take an imaginary journey to its source , from the highest point in your watershed to the place you dwell. A watershed gives welcome! Myers speaks of a watershed as a“basin of relations” that interconnects all human and other-than-human in localized intentional community. He sees a watershed as “a map woven into creation” showing how water flows, not unlike the map that Jesus refers to in his many teachings to his disciples of what it means to put our lives on the line to follow him. To know a watershed is to understand our dependence on the whole of life within its “bounded hydrologic system.” Simply said, Myers calls us to know how water flows in our place, to become a disciple of water. God gives welcome! Water belongs to God. The water in the cup belongs to God and above all else its make-up, its purity and cleanliness matter to God. Freely transferring our possessiveness of water back to the Creator is to recognize that God provides first and that we have a mandate to be in training as disciples of water in our places. Water is a basin of relations. What I do to the water in Primavera creek at the head of the Boardman Watershed, I do to God and all my relations in this biological zone. www.primaverapeace.org June 23, 2014 W I N D O W S : Soulful Glimpses into Primavera GIVE WELCOME!
