TRANSITION TO YEAR ONEAt the end of last term the children had the opportunity to meet us and have a look around the classroom.Organisation of the classroom environment

At the moment we are (along with the children) transforming the classroom to reflect our topic ‘ The Land of Make Believe.’ The classrooms have:

-Role play areas are very important to promote speaking and listening as they feed imagination and develop social skills. We have transformed our areas into an Enchanted Forest and a building site.

-Writing tables/boxes--Book corner/ fairy tale boxes/ puppets etc--Task boards: to promote independence (similar to Reception)--Tables/chairs (everyone sits at a table to complete English and Maths tasks). Time table/ notice board-- Nature table/ reflective area/ Home learning box/ calendar/ weather chartWorkload

Will increase, we want the children to try their best- we will not set any work that we feel children can not achieve.

Golden Rules/Golden TimeThe Golden rules are the same throughout the school- so the

children should be familiar with them.

These rules link to Golden time. In Year 1 we have Golden time on a Friday afternoon rewarding them for their hard work. The children can choose from a range of activities. Each child has agreed to the Golden Rules- these are displayed in the classroom. Each child has their own peg- which is on the sunshine and hopefully will stay on the sunshine. If they break a Golden Rule they will go onto the grey cloud, the sad cloud means they will miss 5 minutes Golden Time (similar to reception).

We believe that good behaviour should be recognised through incentives, privileges and rewards. Such incentives, privileges and rewards may include: praise, praise, praise, verbal and non-verbal, smiley faces, stickers and certificates, special responsibilities.

In both classes, children are grouped into fairy tale settings. If children demonstrate positive behaviour, or a hardworking attitude, the will receive a bead for their team’s pot. At the end of the week, the team with the most beads in their pot receives a prize to take home.

MORNING ROUTINE Children must line up in the playground at

8.50am and will be taken in by their teacher. Please encourage your child to come into school on their own.

Your child does not need a huge school bag- PE kit stays on their peg, home-reader bags/ library bags go home.

The children are encouraged to bring water bottles (clear, containing no more than 500ml and with a sports cap)

TA’s will be by the door to greet the children, help them with their belongings. If you have a note - please make sure your child knows it is in their bag or put it in their hand or pass it on to a TA.

YEAR 1 PHONICS SCREENING TEST

What is the Year 1 phonics screening check?

The Year 1 phonics screening check is a short assessment to confirm whether individual pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. It will identify the children who need extra help so they are given support by their school to improve their reading skills. Children who do not reach the required standard (32/40 correct), will then be able to retake the check in Year 2.

It is for all Year 1 pupils. It is a statutory requirement for all schools to carry out the screening check. It takes place in June. (This will be the 5th year of carrying out this check)

It comprises a list of 40 words and non-words, which each child will read one-to-one with a teacher. Half the words cover phonics skills which have been covered in Reception, and half the words are based on Year 1 phonics skills.

You might hear you child say “we have been learning alien words/ nonsense words!!”
