Back to where it all began... Five business partners founded KMB Design Group in April of 2008 with 24 employees in Eatontown, NJ.

KMB started the MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) Engineering division.

KMB expanded our Wall office in order to accommodate our growing staff and business lines.

KMB established our mission statement:

“We are committed to achieving the mutual success of our clients, vendors, and staff through engineering excellence, responsiveness, and organized systems.”

Hurricane Sandy devastated the Jersey Shore. KMB designed and deployed emergency generators to restore power.

After Sandy we installed a 60kW permanent generator and moved our data center to the cloud to be prepared for natural disasters such as Sandy.

KMB started the Solar Engineering division.

KMB designed the iconic 123kW solar array on the Deutsche Bank building in Manhattan. It is the tallest solar array in the US.

KMB moves office locations from Eatontown to Wall, NJ where we designed a custom layout to support our growing business.

KMB had our first annual holiday party. This has become a tradition that our employees look forward to every year.

KMB designed an 8.5 MW ground mount solar field at Mercer County Community College.

KMB became licensed in Puerto Rico and was contracted to design and permit small cell installations covering: Fajardo, Carolina, San Juan, Caguas, Toa Alta, Bayamón, Guaynabo

KMB became licensed in all 50 states! KMB completed our 40,000th telecom project.

KMB donated design services for the expansion of a local food pantry in West Long Branch, NJ.

KMB Promoted 3 Key Leaders

• Kristin Heyser, to Partner and Senior VP of Operations• Steven Fox, to VP of Facilities/MEP Engineering• Allison Kimball, to VP of Energy/Solar Engineering

KMB completed our first project in Alaska at Loussac public library in Anchorage.

KMB surpassed 500MW in solar designs.

KMB established our tagline!Responsive Engineering | Proven Results

KMB designed a DAS Hotel for Verizon Wireless. The interior DAS head end room included an integrated 125kW gas back-up generator in the basement of an adjacent six-story building to service the stadium’s DAS system.

Nationwide Small Cell

Small Cell telecom deployments have grown dramatically in the U.S. as this technology allows the wireless networks to improve both coverage and capacity by bringing the radio closer to the user and reducing latency.

KMB provides a full array of services for small cell design and deployment including:

• Pole/Polygon Surveys & Site Selection• Site Acquisition• ROW Surveys• Utility Ground Penetration Radar Survey• Zoning/Permitting• Structural Analysis (Pole/Foundation)• Construction Drawings

In the past 2 years KMB has designed over 15,000 small cell sites throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. KMB recognized this change in deployment architecture in late 2014 and commenced building our Small Cell Division to address the demands of wireless rapid deployment on existing or new utility type infrastructure within the highway rights of ways across the country. By the middle of 2016, our small cell team was working on over 400 sites per week throughout the East Coast and Midwest US.

A major obstacle with small cell deployment is appreciation and understanding of the various jurisdictional requirements with regards to local, state and highway agencies to ensure that the design and deployment timelines are planned accordingly. An example of this was the additional design stipulations regarding small cells in Corpus Christi, TX; within this jurisdiction the poles were designed to resist a maximum wind speed of 180 mph and required inspection and certification by a specialist Wind Engineer. KMB responded quickly and completed the services successfully and on time.

Mercer County CommunityCollege Solar

KMB Design Group provided design and engineering services from concept through approval process and construction. The engineering also included the design for modifications to the college’s medium voltage substation.

This impressive 8.5 MW ground mount installation is behind the meter and will significantly reduce the energy cost to the college (up to 87%) and is believed to be one of the largest solar farms on a college campus in North America.

Telecom Power Reliability

KMB Design Group was the lead A&E firm for a large scale generator power reliability implementation by a major carrier in the Northeast market. KMB’s assignment covered over 700 existing sites throughout New Jersey, New York and Long Island. KMB provided a full scope engineering design, including preliminary site review and analysis, electrical service and equipment upgrades, and structural review and design.

Much of the existing electrical services on these sites were older and were not always representative of current codes, so KMB reviewed site by site and developed a unique approach that met all applicable codes and regulations and provided an efficient and feasible solution for each site.

Drawing on an extensive background in a wide area of municipalities, KMB also provided valuable zoning experience and worked directly with attorneys to ensure all local ordinances and codes were a part of the final design.

In the end, KMB was able to draw on its multi-faceted experience in all disciplines of engineering to provide our client with a detailed, efficient, and code-compliant design. Our client was then able to proceed with this important upgrade, stabilizing & hardening their network to ensure wireless and essential E911 coverage is available when utility power fails.

Loussac Public Library

In December of 2017, KMB was contacted by Stone Peak Ceramics to provide structural engineering services for the installation of their vented façade system on the Loussac Public Library. The library is named after Zachariah J. Loussac who was the Mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1948 to 1951. The library is a majestic building and the renovations are being led by RIM Architects in conjunction with Harrison-Hamnett, PC and Pinnacle Construction Inc. The porcelain vented tile system required structural supports to resist winds speeds of up to 135 mph and extreme temperatures ranging from -35 degrees to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

From a structural point of view, ventilated walls are a “cantilever” system compared to traditional façades; in fact, the supporting metal structure is fixed to the wall of the building by means of brackets and anchoring systems that allow the assembly of independent layers such as the external coating or parameter and an insulating mat in order to create an air gap. The ventilation is produced by openings located at the top and bottom of the cladding or by the open joint pattern creating “The Chimney Effect” which results in these systems being very energy efficient.

In Memoriam

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bruce W. Bowe who was our friend and one of the founding partners of KMB. Bruce helped to establish the vision of our firm with his infectious energy and emphasis on a positive culture.

Prior to helping develop and grow our engineering firm, Bruce was a very successful CPA in his own private accounting firm before moving on to several other ventures. Bruce’s extensive knowledge of business and finance set the stage for our solid growth. He was firm in his beliefs and was always a strong advocate for his family and for KMB. Bruce was also a main driver of KMB’s charitable efforts, with one of the primary focuses on providing food and clothes for those in need.

We mourn the loss of Bruce and to his wife Ellen, his daughter Mary Ellen, and the rest of his family we extend our deepest sympathies for their even greater loss.

We will continue to remember and honor Bruce at KMB with the traditions and vision that he helped to establish.

In lieu of flowers, the family has chosen the Autism Research Institute (www.autism.com) for donations in his memory.
