EXTERNAL VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT

LOCATIONHINT: You may need multiple copies of this workbook page if you have multiple locations.

Below, create a list of the location-based factors that might affect vulnerability for your teams. These items may be researched online, in the news, or might even be anecdotal “evidence” of the local population’s sentiments. Try and be as specific as possible - list how recently these things occurred, the names of companies involved, how many employees were affected, and any other relevant details.

LOCAL UNION POSITIVES LOCAL UNION NEGATIVES

Continue on the back of this sheet if you need additional space. Step back and look at your list - which side of your chart carries more weight, or are they roughly even? How might local sentiment affect your ability to create a UnionProof company?

EXTERNAL VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT

INDUSTRY

6

VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENTCertain industries are more prone to unionization than others. Organized labor has

publicly announced that their current plans include organizing workers in retail, automotive and even industries previously considered too low-wage to target. But even that is evolving to include very visible fast-food industry organizing campaigns. What factors within your industry identify workers that are most likely to be supportive of unions and their promises?

YOUR INDUSTRY: 1

TRADITION: How prevalent are unions in your industry? How is organized labor viewed by those in your industry?

2

TRENDS: What current trends can you observe regarding organizing in your industry right now? You may need to do a little research! Are there any corporate campaigns ongoing? Has anyone in your industry signed neutrality agreements? Successful organizing campaigns? Or ongoing strikes?

3

HINT: Networking with an industry association or organization of like-minded companies may help you connect with companies like yours and help you all uncover these specific factors that can affect vulnerability.

EMPLOYEE TURNOVER – Refers to the number of workers who leave an organization and are replaced by new employees. Most often expressed as a percentage of the total workforce.

ETHICS - Individually or organizationally, to behave ethically is to behave in a manner consistent with what is right or moral.

UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE (ULP) - actions taken by employers or unions that are illegal under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) and other labor laws. Some of these rules apply to the interactions between the employer and the union; others protect individual workers from unfair treatment by an employer or union.

VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT – The analysis of multiple factors, both inside and outside of a workplace, that can impact a company’s potential susceptibility to a union campaign.
