San Francisco and Seattle. Although the fur, timber, and canning industries slowly faded throughout the 20th century, the Astoria & Warrenton region has demonstrated its resilience and redefined itself as a vibrant, exciting tourist destination.

Located at the mouth of the 1,200 mile long Columbia River, Astoria & Warrenton was an important meeting place for indigenous peoples long before the arrival of American pioneers. Six years after the Lewis and Clark Expedition arrived in the region and braved the winter of 1805 at Fort Clatsop, John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company established a trading post where Astoria now stands. This area played a central role in the course of U.S. westward expansion. Occupied by both the U.S. and Britain after the Treaty of 1818, the area officially became a U.S. territory in 1848.

Large immigrant populations, particularly Scandinavians and Chinese, flocked to the Pacific Northwest in the late-19th century. They joined the colorful local fishermen and became central figures in the bustling fishing and canning industries that helped to make Astoria the liveliest boomtown between

“We love riding the trolley to visit the shops, galleries & eat ourselves silly at our favorite restaurant. We always stop to pick up some smoked salmon! Afterwards, we relax with a coffee while enjoying the sunset.” – HELEn, AUSTIn Tx
