VSS Creative Virtual Photography Club is
growing at a healthy pace getting top
photographers as well as keen beginners with
loads of talent on board. The young guns are
showing their worth in heaps and bounds.
To the traditional six categories: Avant Garde,
Creative Portraiture, Creative Pictorial,
Creative Nature, Creative Monochrome and
Photojournalism two more were added:
Creative Scapes and Fine Art.
A maximum of eight entries per photographer
are considered monthly with a max of two
TOP 10's per category.
The goal, to have the TOP 10 winners
published in an annual glossy ‘coffee-table’
book, was realised last year. TOP VSS
Creative TOP 10 Photographers 2018 made
this dream a reality.
VSS Creative TOP 10 Photographers 2019
represents some of the best creative
photography of 2019 in SA. TOP 10 2019 has
taken the benchmark one notch higher, which
almost seemed impossible when glancing
through TOP 10 2018 book.
The photos featured are more than 800
winning images from January to December
2019, from 160 photographers a 30%
increase of photographers reaching the TOP
10. Total entries for 2019 was more than
10,000 and around 500 photographers
competing.
TOP 10 winners are featured alphabetically with a
small bio of each photographer together with his /
her winning images of 2019. TOP 10 1st, 2nd and
3rd winners of month images are displayed larger
than others.
The last chapter, From our Judges features work
of the adjudicators, who for obvious reasons
could not enter the competition.
The first TOP 10 publication was almost a
Who’s Who of Photography - this, the 2nd publication, is an almost
definitive Who’s Who in Modern SA Photography.
Martin Dudley stated that, this publication printed
annually will be a historic reference of our work
and a history of photography in SA, 10 years from
now. The printed photo will always supercede
electronic versions flying around on the net.
I would like to thank and congratulate all
participating photographers, they inspired us and
collectively made VSS Virtual Club the towering
platform for most of the top SA photographers it is
today. And lastly my family and judges who spent hours
adjudicating and discussing top photos in order to
award winners - with the quality of work entered
this is a daunting task.
What strikes us, as judges, is the
diversity of work.

Jacques De Klerk
I got interested in photography in the early 70's as my Dad was always taking photos of the family and tried different techniques with those days "film"I started playing with my older brothers camera and it all started there - self taught with just playing around until I got what I wanted. It then was a long process to get the film full of captures and sent for costly developing and printing. It was a love hate relationship with the camera's and eventually I start a studio in early 2000's.I do what I like most these days in my studio - namely working with people, not only with the camera but also helping them discover themselves in a whole different manner than that what they normally see in a mirror of themselves. One of the more frequent questions I am asked by my clients — whether they are models, moms, young couples or anything in-between — sounds something like this: "Hi Jacques - could you please send me a few concepts which will help me prepare for
our photo shoot?"This question shows up an industry which has taught people that they have to bring ‘the person the photographer would like them to be’. This is exactly what I do not want. Your greatest gift to yourself, and to me, is for you to come as you are. Through one-on-one conversations we will discover what you really desire, and how we can bring that to life through our time together. A concept may help, but I want to develop that concept with you, not for you.
So, let's break free from the norm and the perceived photographic ‘boxes’ - let's create something
unique, beautiful and full of meaning.

Ineke Truter Old Soul
Ineke Truter
I am a working mom, blessed with a beautiful son and backed by the support of a wonderful man.Although I was unable to study photography as a profession it has always been my dream and passion and is something that I have always wanted to do.At the age of 26, a friend gave me an incredible opportunity to buy my first proper camera and a working computer for the editing of my first attempts at photography - something I never dreamed would be possible but for which I had never given up hope.A good friend took me under her wing and provided guidance along the way and in a very short time I was out there experimenting and learning wherever possible. Not long after my purchase, I fell pregnant with my beautiful boy and made the decision to put my photography on hold and focus on my little family. Whilst I didn't do many photoshoots during this time, I continued to experiment with photography and videos - spending all my free time honing my editing skills and building my confidence. In 2019, I found myself in the position to be able to once again focus on photography full time. While I offer maternity and newborn baby shoots,
my passion is for Fine Art Photography and I am excited to share my love of this with you all.
Janita van Niekerk
Janita lives in South Africa and is a passionate photographer.
I developed a passion for photography at a very late stage of my life. I like various mediums of photography where I experiment a lot with certain types of art and painting with light. As a photographer I try to be as versatile as possible but favor art, monochrome and street photography. I love to do creative photography together with altered reality, combining them all together in one single photo.
Janita opened her own studio for portrait photography when time allows. She also loves traveling to do landscape and wild-life photography.

Johan Scott
Johan is owner, manager and guide of Ximongwe, a private photo safari lodge within the Kruger National Park, and is, as such, exposed to some of the best nature and wildlife photography opportunities in South Africa. Johan’s extensive knowledge of the African bush, its vegetation and its creatures, big and small, combined with excellent photographic skills, makes him the ideal companion and guide on a photographic safari. His photographic ventures have taken him throughout southern and central Africa, where he has also tracked the Lowland-Gorillas in the DRC with Gus Waschefort.
Johan’s comprehensive knowledge of the birds of southern Africa is clearly
illustrated in his work.
No wonder that his forte is bird photography, which requires patience, tenacity and a firm knowledge of photography.

Jean Goldstone
I am an enthusiastic amateur photographer who is passionate about the outdoors-
I am very fortunate to live in a very beautiful part of our country-Jeffreys Bay!
My photographic journey started about 7 years ago when my daughter needed an extra person to do a course with
the late – Pine Pienaar in Port Elizabeth- at the time I wasn't too keen but –
Oh! Boy! Did the bug bite- I haven't stopped since that course.
My favourite genre is macro- I love the little bugs and I get such a sense of achievement when I manage to get
good shots of little critters.I also love sea-scapes and landscapes and every opportunity I get to go to the beach I am there with my camera. I learn new things everyday and it is such a blessing to be able to pursue my passion.

He is also a Lightroom trainer and facilitator
here and in the UK. In 2008 he joined PSSA and holds an Associate (APSSA) in wildlife. Joey Nel
I specialise in landscape and wildlife photography and am residing in Jeffreys Bay. My love for photography started at the age of 22 when I bought my first “point and shoot” camera. I always use to take pictures wherever I toured South Africa. My deceased husband, Jean, saw my talent and bought me my first proper camera and ignited my passion for photography. I went on various workshops in wildlife, sports and landscape photography and combine all the various techniques in my shoots. I have toured Africa; especially Namibia, Botswana and Kenia a lot for my wildlife photography. I have experience the Wildbeest Migration a couple of times and love the Masai Mara. My landscape photography is mostly done in South Africa and also Kubu Island in Botswana. The South African coastline are mostly my playing field and I love to get moving and flowing feelings in my photographs, which have me enduring extreme conditions and sacrifice to get the “perfect picture”

It was emotional watching the ritual of the group and how they still wanted to protect the dead baby. Tears were flowing while taking the photos.
I am at my happiest behind the camera and have won various photography competitions and am also blessed that my passion and efforts have been recognised to have some of my work published in books.
Joggie van Staden
Nature photographer; with a background of 35 years practicing as a Plant ecologist/Environmental scientist, Joggie realised his life-long dream and became a full-time photographer in 2015. His professional expertise, combined with a background in amateur photography since 1977, inevitably lead him to specialise in nature photography, covering a wide range of subjects including wildlife, bird, macro, flower and landscape photography.

It appears photography has always been part of who I am. At first, I tried to paint, but I quickly realised that I was no painter. However,
the urge to create kept burning inside me and I found that with photography, I could satisfy this
urge.
I bought my first digital camera in 2005 and in 2006 joined Vanderbijlpark Photographic Society as well as PSSA(Photographic Society of South Africa). In 2007 I joined the committee of the Vanderbijlpark Photographic Society as the PRO, a position I still hold. In 2011 I achieved my APSSA honours (digital open) and in 2015 my FPSSA(fellowship).
I am an active judge at my local club as well as at clubs in the surrounding areas. I also judge National and International salons on a regular basis. I am part of a team that hosts an annual course for beginner photographers with the aim to motivate the students to join PSSA and a photographic club in their region.I am a judge on PSSA honours judging panel that happens twice a year.I am on the board of PSSA and have held the position of Regional Director for South Gauteng from 2017. I believe that photography is a form of art.

Johann Grobler

My name is Johann Wilhelm Grobler II, although I go by Johann or JWGFoto. I have had a life-long passion for photos but have only recently started to work at bettering my skills in photography. If I had to say what my favourite subject matter is, it would be nature. I am becoming somewhat of a birder but all of nature is what makes me pick up my camera at 4am.Over the past few years I have also developed a fondness for portraiture and attend open days regularly.Sport photography is my main income at the moment working for outfits that require freelance photographers on a regular basis. In this field I enjoy gymnastics and athletics photography the most. For 2020 I am also working to become an accredited Motorsport SA photographer.Besides photography I also work in Education. We present courses to learners in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics. These courses make use of Rocket Science to create a visually stimulating experience for the learners. The learners launch real Rockets at the end of each course! This of course, provides an interesting subject matter for photography.

Johan Hosten - The Cave and the Sea
Photographer Johan is from Belgian origin and his love for travel, nature, art and photography was “inherited” from a few generations before him and remains a dedicated passion.Johan has excelled on club level photography and has been successful with his national colours, the Fellowship of the Photographic Society of South Africa (FPSSA) in both colour and monochrome genres. It was then considered essential to move away from perfectionistic documentary (guideline tethered) photography as advocated by the club scenario. He is a professional Landscape Architect, running his own consultancy. He has been lecturing in this field in many tertiary and private institutions all over Southern Africa. Johan feels that his training in design and his love of the arts has greatly influenced his more artistic approach to photography. Aligning with his qualifications, landscape, nature, macro, abstract and botanical themes are his main interests. The last number of years Johan has experimented with his photography to achieve more creative photographic images (fine art photography).
Real art is more subjective, imaginary and sensory, thereby having more soul and feeling.
Johan attempts to create his visual art images in camera and not necessarily within the computer (here he admits a lack of skill). Johan, therefore, considers himself as seeing and thinking “out of the box” and persistently shifts his barriers. Novelty is the true spirit and soul of an artist. The passion to be “different” and more individual is very strong and he continuously develops and adapts his style of photography.

I first started in Black and White Photography back in 1975 where I joined the Jhb. Photo. Soc. I only did darkroom work where I progressed to 5 star. I then started a family and later a printing business where I virtually did no photography besides a bit of professional studio work for ad agencies, designers etc. I mainly used Mamia RB 67 and Lynhoff 4”x5”cameras .
In about 1994 I joined Jhb. Southern Suburbs club. I was there for about a year and then moved to Pretoria and joined Pret. Photo. Soc. I am now a Honorary Life Member.I'm trying to concentrate on nature and fine art but attempt most genres. I do sell my prints when I can.to interior decorators etc.

My photography is mostly focused on nature images. I try not to concentrate on a specific genre in nature , but rather by what is being presented to me in wildlife and nature. Be it dramatic landscapes, macro or action in wildlife, I have a holistic approach. Modern DSLR's give one the oppertunity to be more creative with nature images. I like it more to be creative “in-camera” , than in post processing afterwards. Images that still have a natural feel about them appeal to me.
VSS also gave me the perfect platform to present images in nature with a more creative
bias.
Johan Kloppers FPSSA
My interest in photography started when I was still at school. In 1973 I bought my first SLR camera a Leicaflex SL and that set me on this wonderful journey of photography. In 1975 I joined the Photographic Society of South Africa (PSSA) and since 1981 I have been a Life Member of the Society.Through the many years of being a member of PSSA I managed to obtain in various categories the following honours FPSSA, APSSA(vers)I have served on the Board of PSSA as the Regional Director for Western Cape for many years. Under my leadership this region hosted in 2012 and 2016 two very successful PSSA National Congresses at Langebaan. We also during this time started with our own version of very successful JAP courses running over a period of two years, and is currently busy with the third round.
During my photographic career I have been very successful nationally and internationally winning many competitions especially in the Wildlife categories. I have had many of my works published in books and magazines.I have been invited to lecture at many congresses and workshops. My passion is to help and teach fellow photographers.
Photography is such a wonderful experience
and I am just so grateful that it could be part of my life.

John Vosloo
As an amateur photographer leaning towards wildlife photography
my mantra is to let your heart be the lens of your camera.
Look at and study your subject carefully to try and really understand nature in its simplicity as well as its complexity. My true and deep love of nature certainly helps in trying to connect my image subject with my viewer. I have a background in darkroom black and white photography and it really helps me to continue to try and understand the unique and diverse qualities of light being the ultimate paint in any photograph and thereafter the subject of the image. To me, photography is the ultimate journey of expression in a visual format and I love it.

Joy Mullin APSSA
Joy began her photographic journey in 2009 and soon discovered that this varied art form fulfilled her creative spirit. She finds joy in nature - photographing wide open spaces, desert colours, fiery skies and exquisitely delicate flowers. She has a special love for street photography where telling a story and portraying emotion is challenging. More recently she has diversified into different genres to seek new creative image opportunities.
Encouraging others to discover their own creativity has always been close to her heart and she has a special empathy for those who, like her, have had to negotiate a steep learning curve in camera and computer skills. She enjoys participating at club level and, to improve her photography, she attended both the JAP and JEP judging courses and has assisted with critiques, judging and talks. Joy received her APSSA in January 2018 and DPSSA in 2020.

Ken Lovell
Hobbyist, passionate, and self-taught trial-and-error photographer, working mostly after hours and weekends, Ken Lovell started photography at an early age of 19, using only old-school film and a darkroom. At the age of 21, mainly due to career circumstances and family responsibilities, he found himself holding back from photography. However, at the age of 51 he reverted back to his first love and passion. Now an avid hobbyist photographer, with full-time employment serving the mining industry

Kim Roberts discovered photography about four years ago and since then it has become one of her passions.
Kim has always been fascinated
with fine-art photography and the process of taking a photo
and turning it into art.
After lots of research and following online courses she started trying this for herself and feels that she is just at the beginning of an exciting journey. She loves following VSS Creative, which is her inspiration.

My love affair with photography began in 2003 with an epiphany.I was attending a photo workshop in the Northern Cape with the celebrated Master of Light, Freeman Paterson. Hie slideshows of photographs depicting the extraordinary in the ordinary, changed my view on the world forever.Photography has become both a passion and an addiction and I can never stop seeing the world in images wherever I happen to find myself.I enjoy all genres of photography, especially dance and stage photography, landscape and wildlife and street photography.
I love to travel and explore new horizons with my camera,
searching for light and compositions to tell my story.
I enjoy the challenge of developing and growing as a photographer every day and like to facilitating the growth of other photographers too.

Kitty van Dam
I live in the beautiful city of Durban on the east coast of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. I enjoy walking, whether along the beach, in a park, at a garden nursery or doing nature trails. Photography is a new genre of art form that I have discovered, especially with a cell phone one can carry around. It's a new exciting fabulous world of magic. Even as a child I have always been curious and aware about the world around me. Not just to notice things, but to actually look and see them.
To be aware, feel the texture
and see colours.
As an artist that works in oil pastels and acrylic paints, I can incorporate my work with the images I take.

Laetitia Kenny MPSSA
Laetitia has evolved from being a Fine Art student and art teacher, exploring a multitude of creative genres such as painting, drawing, etching, pottery and sculpture to years pulling prints in a chemical darkroom. This ultimately led to an introduction to digital photography, Photoshop and extensive experimentation with photo manipulation. In effect a shift from Darkroom to Lightroom! Her fascination with photo manipulation explains her passion for Altered Reality, creative portraiture and anything in monochrome. It embraces both her love for the Fine Arts and photography and allows for complete artistic freedom. Laetitia has won numerous photographic awards both locally and internationally. She won the Impala Trophy for prints in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and the Digital Monochrome League in 2014. She was awarded the honour of Master of the Photographic Society of South Africa MPSSA in 2013. My most sincere thanks go to Hein Waschefort for creating this platform, VSS, to inspire us so that we may learn, develop, and evolve into better digital artists.

Leon Heyes
Last year I had the huge privilege of being included in this AMAZING book and I am just so pleased to be included again. It is such an incredible honour to be included with the likes of the photographers featured here.It is through this forum that I have learnt so much and it makes me keep striving for better. What can be more rewarding than engrossing oneself in this amazing hobby? I now find I am experimenting more and pushing the boundaries more and more, mainly due to the inspiration gleaned from this fantastic showcase. When I look at these images I feel like a kid looking in a candy store window. With a couple of pennies in my pocket, the possibilities are endless.

Leon Jacobs LPSSA
From a young age Leon has been infatuated with beauty and the art of capturing and displaying life and things. He joined the club scene in 2007 with no photographic experience and a Panasonic FZ50. Since then Leon has been involved in club photography and the growth process to become
‘a capturer of beauty’
He tries his hand at everything but has found that he resonates towards model work and in general people photography.
