    The divine sacred hymn of the thousand nm - names ofGoddess Lalit , occurs in the dialogue on the greatness of the Dev,

    between sage Agastya and Lord Hayagr va, who is the treasurehouse of knowledge. These nms, not only talk about the extra-ordinary qualities of the Dev, but also brings out the ultimate truthshown by Upani ads . While Hindu scriptures use male, female orneutral gender to refer to it, the Supreme Being is visualised asDev Lalit , a female form, in this work. The devotees who recitethis Sahasranm daily, will be benefited much. Many have ex-

    perienced this in their life time. Dev can be worshipped with theflowers like lotus, lily, campaka etc. Group recitation of this hymnduring Navartr festival, Tuesdays, Fridays and other auspiciousdays, is recommended by the learned and pious people.

    In Hinduism, hymnology - the Sanskrit Stotra literature isvery vast. The Lalit Sahasranmam is one such stotra which formsthe thirty sixth chapter of the great Lalitopkhynam a short nar-ration on the deity

    Lalit, which itself, again is a part of the

    Brahm a Pur am the mythological work that deals with theCosmic Egg an egg from which everything came into existence.

    This hymn was taught by the sage Hayagrva an incar-nation of Lord Vishnu in the form of Hayagrva the Lord with ahorses head, to the sage Agastya at the latters earnest request. Itis said that, this highly powerful hymn was composed by the god-desses presiding over the power of speech, like Vain and her

    companions, after they have been directed by the Dev herself todo so.

    This Sahasranm one thousand names, starts with thename rmt and ends with Lalitmbik . These names are in onehundred and eighty three loks couplets, verses. All these versesreflect on the infinite glory of the Great Mother Lalit s beauty,splendour, power, action etc. The hymn under phalaruti the part

    dealing with the description of the fruits of benefits of recitation,gives a long list of the benefits that accrue to a devotee, whochants this with due respect and faith. This part of the hymn clearlysays that, the devotees will be rid of their sins and will be blessedwith eternal bliss.

    The Nms of this great hymn are in Sanskrit. These aretransliterated into Tamil and English scripts. Besides, word byword meaning in Tamil and English scripts have also been pro-vided to enable the devotees to further their knowledge in thishymn. Short explanations have also been given, wherever neces-sary. The devotees are requested to read and recite this holy Sahas-ranm and receive the bountiful blessings of the Goddess LalitDev - the consort of Lord Paramewara .
